Can anyone provide me with a good resource for finding deities with lists of their specific roles and properties?
I'm looking in particular for a god or goddess of protection, health-wise, for my family. Their well-being is one of my highest concerns, and I recently broke all deals with the God of my childhood. One of those 'deals' was the protection of my family in return for my faith. It was basically all that tied me to Him. In the years since, members in my family have been in and out of the hospital with sometimes life-threatening problems but remain more or less unharmed by them. I've had 3 family members go to Iraq and back (some in combat specific units) unharmed.
After breaking the tie, I'm very concerned that their luck will run out and am in a sort of hurry to find some way to protect them.

Anyway, enough life story, any ideas?

I'm by no means an expert on Celtic gods/desses, but you could look into Brighid. She deals with healing (since you have had sick family members) mostly, but she has other aspects as well.

Here's a link on pantheon.org using the search term "protection." (http://pantheon.org/cgi-bin/search.pl?Terms=protection) It lists gods from all different types of pantheons. Good luck. You can use the search to look up other terms as well.

Thanks :)

There was a particular goddess I read about the other day (briefly), and was trying to remember who it was. I'm pretty sure it was Brigid.

The angel Raphael can cover for health reasons.

The angel Michael is the typical angelic protector.

Mercury or Hermes has been said to give men the gift of medicine, which Apollo created. He is also the one to bear the caduceus (not to be confused with the Rod of Asclepius/Asklepios). Mercury and Hermes are also both protectors of the home, and Mercury has oft provided me with plenty of protection period. :)

Snakes are often representative of healing, and Athena is sometimes depicted and associated with snakes.

Hmm..that's interesting. Mercury and Hermes have both been on my mind lately as subjects to study, so I'll definitely look into them. :)

Oh? I've been obsessively looking up Mercury for the past couple of weeks. In turn, I've found information on Hermes. Both are very intriguing. I am even considering to dedicate myself to Mercury for all He's been doing for me and with me, but it'll definitely take more than a couple of weeks' research for it, naturally.

At any rate, I consider Him to be a grand protector, and He's also the quickest, if I do say so myself. :D

hhmm... Well if you are going to protect your family I would go with a motherly and/or hearth deiety like Hestia Vesta or Brigid. The orisha Yemaya is a good choise as well. For the family members in Iraq I would go with a more warrior like diety like Athena or Aires.

Oh, I can't believe I didn't think of Her...

I can also suggest Demeter or Ceres, the Mothers of Prosperina and Persephone, respectively. Such a loving Mothers must be great caretakers!

Yeah, first thing I thought of was Athena...but Hestia would be good for the family and homelife.

Apollon, god of healing
Asklepius, god of medicine
Hermes, has relations to both of the above and often is viewed as a bringer of good health
Athene, though her healing influences are usually focused on battle and war
Hekate, who can grant any favor to those she wishes from earth, sea and sky

Hmm..Hermes has especially been one I have been looking toward, given his associations with travel. With 2 of my 3 siblings being in the military or a military wife, travel is very common in my family and we often do large amounts of it quite often. Thanks for the list, I'll look into each of them.

I also believe Mithras protects soliders, and Thor is the protecter of all men. Also Quan Yin since She hears all prayers, and Thunderbird as well.

Hmm, I haven't really considered much outside of indo-european deities. Perhaps I should :)

The gods that i think would be great for protection are Athene, Hecate (since i've called upon them to protect me),

Also Apollo, The Morrigan maybe but i'm not too sure about any others

It appears as though you have been given some fine Deitys' to choose from. Read about them and see what feels right for you. Although, speaking for myself and some other's sometimes they seek us out.

If you need help in a hurry, Hecate (Hekate) is one who will put right what is wrong in a heartbeat. In my own personal plight, I have to say that I personally have never seen anyone work faster.

I find it a shame that some have chosen to give her a bad reputation throughout the Centuries, since in reality Hecate is nothing like that. She doesn't ask much of me, but I feel I owe it to her to explain how much she protects her followers and those who ask for her help.

Wishing you my best,
Brightest Blessings,
