View Full Version : Rabbit Deity?

All right, I'm a rabbit lover, let's face it. The one thing I'll get fluffy over (apart from my precious Pinky blanket) is bunnies, namely because my rabbit, Fergus, "raised" me from when I was 3 to 13. Anyways... I got to wondering, just out of curiosity, if there was a Deity of rabbits? I can see a Goddess linking with fertility, but other than that it's beyond me.
Anyone heard of any? :)
PS: GO BUNNIES! *giggles*

I know one: Eostre/Ostara Dawn Goddess
She is shown with rabbits :)
It's also where we get the Easter Bunny and such things.

Rabbit: fear, timidity, nervousness, humility Rabbit's medicine includes moving through fear, living by one's own wits, receiving hidden teachings and intuitive messages, quick thinking, strengthening intuition, and paradox. Rabbit also represents humility, because he is quiet and soft and not self-asserting. Rabbit reminds us not to be afraid. Fearful thoughts reproduce (like rabbits) and bring the very thing we fear. Rabbit people are so afraid of tragedy, illness, and disaster, that they call those very fears to them to teach them lessons. If you see Rabbit or in any way feel attracted to him, it may be telling you to wait for the forces of the universe to start moving again, to stop worrying and to get rid of your fears. It always indicates a need to re-evaluate the process you are undergoing, to rid yourself of any negative feelings or barriers, and to be more humble. http://www.crystalinks.com/totemanimals.html

Pagannews.com has the following listed as deities of animals: Brighid (Celtic), Cernunnos (Celtic), Flidais (Celtic), Rhiannon (Celtic; of Birds and Horses), Corn Maiden (Faery), Asherah (Canaanite), and Sirtur (Sumerian; of Sheep).

I'd also like to add that even Venus or Aphrodite Themselves have good relations with animals (from what I've read here and there). Diana and Artemis are great with animals, seeing as how They are generally huntresses in the forest.

Yup there are tons linked to animals...but not with Rabbits, which is what Shadow as asking about ;)
The only one I have found a a solid link to rabbits is Eostre.
But I'm sure some others have the rabbit in their sphere of influence being that rabbits are animals-- but that would be in a general sense...and not specific like Eostre

I would have thought that any God or Goddess associated with animals would be associated with the rabbit.

But as Belle Terre said, I'd say Eostre is your best bet concerning rabbits only.

I know they weren't all to do with rabbits, but I figure any deity associated with animals on the whole could also do well with rabbits. I find that my knowledge on deities specifically connected to rabbits is very miniscule.

You know... as I'm reading this... I can't help but think, "Wild rabbits blend into the landscape, kind of disappear... what sense it makes that a deity of rabbits would do the same."
*giggles* Thanks all. I was missing my baby Fergus last night and so this just popped into my head. Thanks again! :)

You might also want to look at the myths and legends concerning the Rabbit in the Moon. Check out the Chinese myth of Chang Er and her rabbit in the moon.

Cheers,

Oh, Jolantru brought up a good point. The Rabbit in/on the Moon is also something in Japanese culture. It's said that this Rabbit likes rice cakes...and he was put on the moon for...being a good animal? Or something. I can vaguely remember any details at the moment, but that might be something to look up.

I'm sure Fergus is pleased at your wanting to research. :)

I love rabbits too! I was born in the year of the rabbit, hence was surrounded by gifts of rabbit toys, etc. People kept dissing the rabbit for being timid, which made me look for signs of rabbits in cultures and their significance. Though there doesn't seem to be much information on gods.
