I saw this website (http://www.kalimandir.org/homepage.asp) for a public Kali temple in California this morning. The temple follows the standard "public temple" model in India -- that means no presiding guru, no membership, open to all.

It looks neat.

Has anyone on MysticWicks visited the temple? What was it like?

I've not visited the Temple but I've known about it for a long time. There is also a mandir in Florida which is very popular also. I have yet to visit the Sri Kalibari mandir in Toronto here, for it is quite famous also, well in Canada anyways (not as famous as Dr. Doobay's Vishnu mandir). If this California temple is anything like the real public ones, there will be an advisory commitee of Pundits, several Gurus who are associated (or as many gurus as the regular attached followers), a Murti of Kali and the other Gods in the main prayer room, expanded Navaratri festivities, and also perhaps also a ghat (holy tank) in the vicinity. I don't think any of the temples in Canada have those as the water would freeze and become unusable. But you should all go if you have the capability, Mandir people are quite friendly and helpful :).

Namaste

P.S. Ah yes i've seen this website before...soem interesing articles on Shakta philosophy on it :).

Thanks for posting that Ben. Pity I'm halfway across the world from it. I'd love to go and visit. Good site. I love their shrine. Gave me a chance to talk to Kali at last. I've been wanting to shout 'Jai Sri Devi Kali Ma' all day, even though I don't know what it means exactly. It's been running around in my head. Been hard to get any work done. :) Yay for Kali!

Haha, you go ahead and shout it if you want...although its not a real mantra...more soemthing I came up with for my personal meditations in anbsence of a real mantra (although i've found others since :) )

Jai means victory, Sri means generally "great" or when applying it to a God it means Lord or venerable one (you could also place Maha here), Devi means Mother or Goddess, Kali Ma is Mother Kali. Its more a conflagulation of two cries, Jai Kali! and AUM Namaha Sri Devi (I bow to the great mother Goddess). It does go along way when you learn just a few of the power words haha

:)

I went to their Annual Kali Puja 2 July's ago and had a very nice time. I've also had the pleasure of visiting it's Mother Mandir in India. Usha Harding, the founder is the author of Kali: The Black Goddess of Dakshineswar. Kali Mandir offers very Traditional Pujas and other services, it's really worth visiting if you have a chance, you'll feel like your in India. On a side note, I'm a member of Kali Mandir, Sharanya, in San Francisco. We are not traditional in a (for lack of a better word), traditional sense, but we also have a Mother Mandir in India and offer Puja's from a Shakta Tantra lineage. www.sharanya.org
Jai Maa!

Thanks for posting this, Ben; it looks beautiful. I've never been there, but have been a visitor to the Hindu temple in Louisville. It's gorgeous, too. :)
