I need a household substance that will dissolve hot-glue but won't damage thin-black cloth (cotton).

Try something like Goof Off (not Goo Gone) or another type of solvent that may melt plastics. Also, I don't know much about hot glue from glue guns, but depending on the temperature it needs to be at, you could always try a hot blow dryer and let it drip through the cloth. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will answer this, though.

Hot glue is very tricky. If its the dollar store cheap kind, you might get away with icing it with freezer ice and picking it off. :ballonsmi

Perhaps you could put some glue on another, preferably similar, piece of cloth you can afford to lose. Then experiment away without the worry.

Depending on how badly the glue is stuck, you can try a few things. If it's thick, try LadyT's idea and freeze it and pick it off.If it's thin and you have thin strands that have gotten stuck in the material, put a hair dryer to it on the hot setting. The hair dryer will remelt the glue to the point of not being noticeable.
