I've never felt much when I use the invocations I've found through research for the Dark Goddess and I was thinking of perhaps writing my own, creating a stronger connection through that. The thing is, I'm clueless! Does anyone have some basic guidelines or ideas for writing/creating one's on invocation? Thanks all!

Well I have written everything-- all my rituals, poems, hymns, devotions, etc. I don't like to use others do I don't! :)
I've never really invoked anything though, but I don't see how different it would be from the other things when it comes to writing your own.

By definition an invocation is:

The act or an instance of invoking, especially an appeal to a higher power for assistance.
A prayer or other formula used in invoking, as at the opening of a religious service.
The act of conjuring up a spirit by incantation.
An incantation used in conjuring.Dictionary.com

So when you write it include who you are invoking and perhaps why [protection, guidance, worship, etc]-- state the purpose and intent.
There isn't really a structure that one has to follow-- it can rhyme or not, be a certian form or not...it's up to you.
I have my own preferances depending on the topic and reason of the poem or writing.
Try different styles and see what works best.
I've see ones that are only two lines, others that are stanzas long.

I found a site with some tips that may help too --

[I]Invocation of the Divine

Statement of purpose
This is simply to tell the Divine why you have called Him/Her to the circle; what you are trying to accomplish.
Magickal Working
Raise energy, through chanting or drumming or however you have chosen to do so. Direct or channel this energy by using candles, herbs, stones or whatever other correspondences you found to fit your specific need. Ground your energy when you have completed the working. Thanking the Divine

The only real advice I have for you is write what comes to you, write from your heart, let go and see what happens :)

I made up my own when I was summoning Aphrodite. I just did what I thought approiate, jacked off on a love poem.

Invoke often. Banish often.

I always use my own work and writing for all endeavours. If you're new to that approach, I suggest looking at the framework of anything you can get your hands on, and scrap what you don't like. A bit of research on what you are invoking can go a long way as well. I can sit in my room with nothing and invoke with success. However, the work can be made much easier with the appropriate correspondences in the immediate surroundings. It's a matter of taste and preparation really.

Other than that, I recommend you begin by centering yourself, banishing, and forming a statement of intent. The rest is up to you. When you're finished ...banish with laughter.

Waaaay TMI Adam.... *stares*
Ah well. In any case, thanks for the advice everyone. I think, as with everything, once I begin writing it, it will come as it's meant to be. Thanks again! :) I'm also looking for general guidelines as far as devotions and such, too... and these have helped loads!

Well, it was the only example of a made up ritual I could think of. It worked for me :)

Yesh, but... still... little embarrassing to read, especially unsuspecting, that's all.
Didn't mean any offense btw.

Oh don't worry, none taken. I'm sure it's slightly shocking, and on some forums I'd be shunned. But this is a fairly open-minded bunch, and it was the only way I could think of to get her attention.

That's good to hear! :D
Well I finished writing it yesterday; I can't wait to see if it works well!! ^_^ Thanks again all for your help! Actually it's a win-win situation; while looking up existing invocations/charges to base mine off of I found some great calming chants, too. Yay! (which is exactly what I need at the moment, heh)

When writing something of this nature, a solid approach is to ask yourself the question, "How ought it to be?"

After all, you want it to be real, and you want it to work. Since your desire is sincere, and you are willing to make the effort, this question is worthy of the attention of the Divine. With this question of, "How ought it to be?", your human Ego demonstrates that it is willing to listen to what your Soul has to say. The Soul, being that part of you which has always been connected directly with the Divine, knows the answers to these questions. The only problem has been getting the Ego to listen.

Let me give you an example. I desire to live an Enlightened life. So I ask myself, "What would I be doing right now, if I were Enlightened?" When I get a good idea of what that probably is, I go out & simply do it. If I have listened well to the Wisdom of my Soul, then everything falls into place exactly as it should be.

The Ego, being a focal point, will naturally want to take care of its own needs, & desires. The Soul has a greater Wisdom, since it includes both that which is personal, and that which is Universal...

How ought it to be?
