Dagda asked me to repost this here for you. I did not originate this!

TAROT POKER

(This explanation was provided by Jana Hollingsworth in her comic strip 'Pagan Cowboy Joe' and appeared in GREEN EGG Yule 1991 issue).

If you can play Poker, you can play Tarot Poker. The Minor Arcana forms hands just like in regular poker.

The Major Arcana ranks above the Minor Arcana and higher-numbered Trumps rank above lower-numbered Trumps.

Major & Minor Arcana hands in ranking order. The Trump hands are marked with a star (*).

*Trump Straight Flush: any five Trumps in numerical order.
Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Knight, Page all of same suit.
Straight Flush: any five cards in sequence, all of same suit.
*Imperial Four: Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor.
Four of a Kind.
Full House: three cards of one rank and two of another.
*Trump Flush: five trumps not in sequence.
Flush: five cards in same suit, not in sequence.
Straight: five cards in sequence, not in same suit.
*Astral Three: Star, Moon, Sun.
Three of a kind.
Two Pair.
One Pair.
*Trump pairs beat Minor Arcana pairs. In descending order they are:
World and Fool
Judgement and Justice
Any TWO: Sun, Moon, Star
Devil and Lovers
Temperance and Chariot
Hermit and Hierophant
Emperor and Empress
High Priestess and Magician

Fool is wild card.
Wheel of Fortune is wild card only in combination with other Trumps.

>>All Trump combinations have to make magickal sense as the union of opposites.<<

{The author makes no pairings for Strength, Hanged Man, Death, or the Tower. Does that make them a combination with the Fool or Wheel cards? I read cards- I don't play them! LOL!! - tarotbear}

Ladies and Gentlemen - if you please - ANTE UP!

{If you play Tarot Strip Poker...tell us about it!}

It looks like he put it in order of what type of hand beats what! :D ....and If I remember right 5-card draw (as there are many ways to play poker.....you draw 5 cards and have the option of throwing I think up to 4 away and getting 4 new cards from the dealer) Of course you have to ante up before that. (Ante is whatever the dealer sets it at) Beyond that.....I'll have to ask my boyfriend. (it's been a long time since I've played poker!)

Sounds good.

But won't it screw your cards?

On the contrary, this gives you fun time with your cards. You are handling them, which makes them happy, and you are having fun! I would cleanse my cards afterwards just like I would from a reading ....after letting someone else handle them.

I get my cards out all the time and just shuffle them. I want to spend time with them, but don't necessarily want to do a reading......so this is great for me! :D

I think playing solitary would be great to play with the Minor Arcana also! :D This way you can look for correspondences and hidden meanings while you are having fun! ;)

For those who like to do 'other' things than readings with their cards I highly recommend the book Tarot Games - 45 Playful Ways to Explore Tarot Cards Together by Cait Johnson & Maura D. Shaw. Amazon carries it.

Silver Venus - Thanks for your reply. :sunny:

Here's the game my girlfriend and I play all the time. It is from the book I recommended.

"After mixing the deck face down, both players choose four cards at random. Each player holds her cards, facing toward her. Then they each take turns picking a single card at random from the other's hand. If a player picks a card that matches one of her own (suits match, numbers match, as do Major Arcana - for example, a Four of Cups would match a Six of Cups, and a Queen of Swords would match a Queen of Wands), then the player places the matched cards down on the table and opens a discussion about the feelings or issues depicted. You might begin by looking at the suits and their significance (Swords indicating the mental/intellectual realm, for example) and then see how the images relate to your shared life experience. Players continue doing this until one person plays her or his last card, or until there are no more matches possible. Any remaining cards can be shared as issues still in process."

We have a lot of fun with this - hope you do too. :smoke:

No! Thank you!!! That sounds like a really great game!! :D I especially like the thoughts of discussing the cards after you make a pair and seeing who chooses to go with what and who gets what!
What happens if there arent any matching cards on either side? Do you pick from the pack aswell? or After you get a pair do you then pick from the pack again another two? :)
My bf is coming up this weekend and Ill ask him to play it with me!! :)
Thanks again!

To answer your questions in order:

You will get matches - any cards left unmatched are shared as issues in progress.

Both players choose 4 cards to start. No need to draw from the pack.

You take turns selecting a card from the other's hand.

You could, of course, create your own game and draw cards from the pack. :evilway:

Remember you will either have suit matches OR number matches OR Major Arcana matches. (ex. 4 of cups and 9 of cups OR eight of wands and 8 of swords OR Chariot and Star)

The four cards you each draw are it....it's your "reading" per say. (no more drawing) What ever you can "match" with your partner you enterpret them together as shared life experiences. Then, when you have no more matches...these are your shared issues that still have influence in your lives.

I hope that helped. LOL :sunny:

Let me know how it goes with Paul!

I remembered this from the 80's from a Steven Wright special and when I saw this thread about Tarot Poker I just "HAD" to share:

"I played poker last nite with Tarot cards. I got a Full House and three people at the table died."

:rotfl:

(Sorry, had to do this! Blessings all!!! :smooch: )
