View Full Version : Where Can I Find This?!?

Celtic, Egyptian, Druid,...........what about Norse? This belief system seems to be pretty obscure. Either that or I'm looking for it in all the wrong places. :D
Does anyone know where I can find information on Norse beliefs and actual magickal practices? I know the runes quite intimately and I know the pantheon of the Norse God/desses...I have also been able to dig up a good portion of their myths, but nothing in the way of ritual or actual spellcasting. For all I know it could be right under my nose all this time but apparently I'm stuck being blind ;) I'm sorry I can't be more specific on what I'm looking for but any info is welcome! I've always been very drawn to them and upon learning my family history I have found that I am of Germanic / Scandinavian decent so in a sense I'm searching for my spiritual heritage!
:(Please Help!?:)

Ok please correct me if I"m wrong but here is my understanding of why you're not finding what you're looking for.
The Norse traditionally were not magickal people in the sense that we think of today. MAgick and ritual and spellwork were nowhere nearly as important as in other pagan cultures, whih may be why you aren't finding any information on the subject. It just wasn't a huge part of the culture.
Asatru is a religion you might want to look into for information on Norse practices and beliefs. This is an article I have found very helpful:
http://www.webcom.com/~lstead/wicatru.html
I'm not an expert on Norse paganism but hopefully this information can get you going in the right direction.

oh dear! Thanks amberlaine. I wish I could explain what I feel..... When I posted before I knew ritual and spellwork weren't exactly the words I was looking for but I didn't know how else to ask.... I think you may be right though. :( wishfull thinking all in all maybe, but I have found one spell claiming to be Norse and I just can't explain it but I've got this ever present static feeling when I deal with anything to do with this. Like in my World History class, one of the sections though not very large covered the Vikings. This one day we watched a video on the Vikings and even though they are one of my main interests I was taking the opportunity to sleep. (the class was really early and I'm not much of a morning person ;) But I was woke quite forcefully by what felt like an electric shock and I jumped so hard in my chair that I startled everyone around me, not to mention got quite a few laughs including from the prof. :o Anyway, I was really dazed and all I could hear was this low pitched humming sound which was eventually replaced by the voice of the narrator in the film just as he was beginning the section on religion ironically enough. And the humming wasn't just a sound I could feel it inside me too. From that point on I couldn't sit still and I was so charged up that I had to ground myself as soon as I got outside of class! I couldn't ground myself in class for some reason, the more I tried the more charged up I got! So I Don't Know!:(!
The video didn't have a whole lot to say on their religion either, they said too much of it was passed down orally and so was lost with the on-coming of Christianity.....
Ah well *SIGH*
I guess I'll just keep searching!

Go to Yahoo and type ASATRU into their search engine. You'll come up with lots of great information.

Amberlaine is correct. The Norse didn't practice Magick, persay. However, they were a violent sort, from what I have learned. What I know of them indicates that they were not of a God/dess. Instead, they believed a lot like Hitler and were after world domination. They held Human sacrifices to show the rest their power. The sacrifices often ended with someone's head being removed and placed on a pole at the edge of town.
They also hung rows of victims from trees for all to see as they entered a Norse village.
They were a highly feared culture but, like Hitler, Stahlen and the rest, they do not exist for a reason.
However, they were classified by Christianity as Pagan due to their lack of religion.
They scare me.
Can't say where to find more about them though,

Here's a site http://irminsul.org/ that Talk Freedom Links rated like this:
Download: A
Graphics: A
Content: A+++
Navigability: A+
Music: none
Knowing nothing more about Ásatrú other than its Norse connections, this was a wonderful site to stumble upon. Containing limited graphics and many more links that I had time to read at one sitting, this site is definitely worth checking out. Whether you practice Ásatrú, are merely curious about it, or are simply looking for information on Norse Heritage, I believe you can find all you want to know here. With my own Celtic/Norse/Native American heritage, I will be reading this site more thoroughly when time allows.

I'm going to take that as a joke...I hope? Just because I have an interest doesn't mean that I'm going to go insane and start sacrificing people! :( And also doesn't mean that that's the path I will choose to follow in the end. It's just something I want to find the truth about; The LIGHT AND the DARK TRUTH.

Sometimes my humor can be a little dry.
Yes, this was absolutley meant as a joke. By all means, learn. I would never discourage that.
Blessings,

And if I run accross a book, I'll let you know.

NO AND NO AND NO. Try Raven Online for a really good Asatru site. Asatru is simply the name for the Norse religion--the VIKINGS (Norse) were a pretty war-like society, but so were the Celts. Try the current issue of Archaeology Today for an article about Celtic blood rites. And the Norse had a whole pantheon, just like everyone else. And they were not after world domination, they simply took what they wanted/needed, just like a whole lot of other cultures of the time (not to mention today)
Hitler simply took some of the symbols and twisted them for his own purpose, as he did Christianity and everything else--he denied he was anything but Christian, by the way. And now some people are taking the symbols to represent their own hate. The skinheads are an offshoot of Nazism, not Asatru.
Regards,
Maggie

Hey rantraven! I'm sorry, I shouldn't have jumped on you like that. It's just that my heritage spiritual or otherwise means a lot to me. It's one of the few things that goes very deep with me and that I am serious about at all times. So, friends?:D?

You took the words right out of my mouth. I know I come off sounding like I know very little about the Vikings but I do know quite a lot about their history, and way of life. What I didn't know was what their belief system was called. But now thanks to everyone here who did know I do! And now I know that I was indeed looking in all the wrong places! Wow, I never thought I'd get this kind of response...Considering I thought that I would never find what I was looking for!
THANKYOU X3!
