Do you believe forcing spirits/elementals/familiars etc. with the sole exception of exorcising/banishing unwanted/malevolent spirits is respectful or disrespectful? Unless they are a direct threat to me and mine, It doesn't sit well with me at all. What do you think?

Is "sorcing" a typo? Should it be "forcing" maybe? I don't think anyone or anything should be forced to do something. I'm on a good reciprical relationship with the entities I work with. They help me, I help them, nobody feels forced to do anything. It's a sharing rather than a forced taking or use of something.

For me personally there is a factor or respect involved. The spirits I work with and I have a relationship. If they want something they tell me and I can say yes or no.If I want or need something I tell them and they can say yes or no.It is a two way street. From my experiences they usually understand and are not upset with the word no.We have an understanding and work things out until we come to an agreement. There are times when I think I deal better with spirits than the living.

ahh, well a friend of mine and I were having a discussion, a rather long runnoing one about evocation and invocation. The way i see it is if a buddy calls you on the phone cause he is stuck, and he was wondering if you could fix his car, and evocation was more about someone sneaking into your house knocking you unconscience forcibly waking you up, holding a gun to your head sand saying fix my car or I'll blast you! I respect his right to practice how he chooses, thats none of my affair, but forcing a spirit or whatever to do as you say or else, is imho pretty rude and crude, and I would never do it. I am curious to see what others have to say about forcing entities to do as you want them to do. Or perhaps I misunderstand evocation entirely.

An interesting definition, although a more usual one would be -
Invocation - summoning divine forces into the magickal practitioner - a la "drawing down the moon" in a Wiccan stylee.
Evocation - summoning divine forces either -
a) Traditional definition; to appear in a visible form before the practitioner, usually confined within a circle or similarly armoured geometrical shape.
b) Modern definition; summoning divine forces from within oneself - i.e. drawing down the moon if one considers that the goddess is an archetype.
The reason that I give two definitions here, is that there seem to be two understandings of the term in the general literature.

In the sense that you mean - forcing beings to do your will - I don't think that it is a good idea. However, I would go along with the comment above, about relationships with spirits, I would concur with this, but would add that not all those relationships are going to be easy or peaceful, sometimes you can get angry with them (and of course, sometimes they can get angry with you). Like working with "normal people" (whatever they are) consensus and agreement will get you further in the long run.

If you have the power to force anyone / anything to do your bidding, you don't need to fear the consequences. If you are self-conscious to begin with, instead of forcing others you could choose to ask for their help. Who knows, they might even indulge. If you have no power whatsoever you can always try to persuade them with prayer, worship or sacrifice. Some beings are complete suckers for sacrifice.
