Okay, I have LOUSY spelling. My bf makes fun of it all the time. I don't really mind because I have learned most of the words in my vocabulary aurally *by hearing it* and inquiring the definition from the one who spoke the word. So I kinda have an exscuse to toss back at him.
I was wondering how many other people learned to spell that way?
I ask because *gryns* i see "a lot" *of people who make the same mistakes I do and get made fun of for.. *constantly I might add*
My father used to tell me to look words up when I didn't know the meaning... it never seemed to help.. how can you look up a word you don't know how to spell in this language when so many words are spelled not as they sound or there are other words that sound the same spelled differently.. the odds of making a mistake are pretty good aren't they?
Well.. thats tonites ramble heh.. better go back to cleaning my dungeon.. erm.. my room!

Ah don't worry about it, I make my living as a writer and I spell check eveything and even learned to read my sentences backwards ( you will find numerous mistakes that way) and yet a day doesn't go by that an editor won't ask me where I learned to spell and then point out a misspelled word in my work. No one is perfect. I won't even mention the joys of puncuation.

Oh I hate that, just read the dictionary. Whats a few hours out of your life to improved spelling and expanded vocabulary? I think I will go do that.

I have frequently read bits and peices of the dictionary to improve my vocabulary comprehension and spelling. So far after years of doing this I still have no gift when it comes to spelling. When writing I frequently use words I wouldn't normally use because I can't spell the ones I would use. I grew up on a college campus and was reading Shakespeare in 4th grade happily I actually enjoy Chaucer in the old english which I tend to find easier to read and spell in but spelling still eludes my grasp. Anyone have a wreaking ball for this mental block?

won awards, was world famous, tons of cash and prizes, but then
as I became a more prolific writer and computers started to check
the spelling for me....I got lazy!
It takes practice and dedication to be a good speller. Something
that if you dont stay on top of it slips away... like grammar.
If you are also a fast typer(and you have to be to post with this
crowd! LOL) it also effects your spelling. You will use shortcuts
in spellin that become habit. c what i mean?

I can talk a storm, online I tend to avoid using words because I don't know how to spell them *pouts*
Although lately I have tried to get in the habit, when I type in Word, to try to correct my spelling errors without spell check, using it only when I get desperate.
I have a great memory for quoting movies, books and plays. I drive people nuts with my ability to find about 5-10 quotes for just about any topic, and yet I cannot remember how to spell many simple words.
Maybe it's because you use a different part of the brain for storing such information.

didn't even *winks*
It looks more like you have a light case of dyslexia!
They aren't spelling errors so much as typos, and not even typical typos where you hit the wrong button, but rather where you simply invert two letters.
for example "did'nt" instead of "didn't"
msot instead of most
spellign instead of spelling.
You obviously know how to spell them, just that the letters get mixed up in the translation from brain to pen&paper

I hear you. I've always been a bad speller. I've worked on it a bunch, though. My teachers and parents used to say that for one that reads so much, I should pick up on the spelling of things. But, while I learned the words, I read to fast to really pay atention to how they where spelt. I find that typing so fast leaves my with a bunch of errors I would have not had otherwize.
Spell check is my friend...
