Woot we have a place to make our anouncements all in one space. Wonderful idea thanks guys :hugz:

Ok so what's the word on your Poetry and Lit Forum? (http://www.mysticwicks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19)

Well the year is coming to a close and we've been running poetry competitions all year. There is a submissions thread for the November Competition (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=113025) so if you'd like to take part head on in there. We also have a poll for you all to choose your favorite poem from last month. We always aprichiate everyone taking their time to just choose a favorite poem so come on over and give us your vote (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=113027)

Still on the subject of the Poetry competitions we need help with illustrations for the MW Poetry of the Year Book (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=112725) We really need a lot of help with this and it would be a wonderful way to maybe get this whole community involved on a project. So if you would like to enter the competition for a design for the book then click the hyper link above. :D

Moving swifty along to another competition I'm currently setting up Short Story Quarterly (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=112693) I'm probably going to look at starting this with the beginning of the new year but I need to hear from people who would be interested in joining in on this. I'm going to make it quarterly so everyone has more time to get writing but other than that the rules are once again pretty simple. We have a maximum word count and your stories get polled by the community at the end of the quarter.

Also in Poetry and Lit we have the National Novel Writing Month Thread (http://http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=35870) for help, suport and crits on your submissions. We have the Word of the Day Thread (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=114411) for helping us all expand our creative writings with wonderful new words. You can read all the poems that have been submitted so far to the MW Poetry Competitions (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=98660) and get writers suport (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=30040) when ever the muse leaves you.

There's a whole lot going on in Poetry and Lit so make sure you pop over soon and join us :reading:

On a sad note, my partner in crime LittlePerson has had to relinquish her position as forum guide for Poetry and Lit. I'm sure you will all join me in thanking her for the time she has given to our little community and in sending her lots of love. Due to difficulties in the real world, LittlePerson won't be able to get online as often. Best wishes LP. I hope things go well for you!:fprtyman3 :hugz::huddle:

I think it's worth noting that there is this aweful trend of not actively responding to other people's poems.
As a poet I love recourse about a poem, good or bad, some acknowledgement for a writers work is always appreciated by them.

So while you're entering contests and writing your own works, remember to stop by someone else's thread and give their stuff a read.

Thanks for Considering.

I agree while I am forum guide and part of my job is to make sure I answer un answered posts, it really isn't my soul perpose or my soul responcability. Besides I can't be the only crit, it wouldn't be right. We need much more active partisipation from the comunity in our little forum but I do my best to bring new blood into it with all these events.

I'm a poet and an English teacher. People never respond positively to what I consider to be constructive criticism so I stopped. Also, people often times aren't posting for criticism, so unless it's specifically asked for, I think people don't want to accidentally offend.

I love getting constructive criticism from people as it helps me, as a writer, to improve. My father is an writer and he's certainly not shy about his critiques, but I would like some input from a different source.

Yes I quite agree! I have submitted several poems and hardly any of them got much response. It's nice to get some attention for your work...as that is what I'm seeking...

Hey everyone, I just wanted to mention that for a few years I have been a Moderator on a Poetry forum called The Poets Sanctuary (http://poetsanctuary.proboards47.com/index.cgi) [I'm Amaranthine on there]. You all should check it out, it's great and you get feedback guarenteed.
My main duties are commenting to and helping people with their poems.
And I myself am a poet-- I have ove 1500 haiku and short pieces and 500 long ones and a billion half finished.
I used to post my poems online [at the Poets Sanctuary and a few other places] but someone stole a few of mine and I've been paranoid since. That's why you never see any of mine on MW, which is an open foum-- that makes the chance of people stealing them even higher. :(. It's a shame people do things like that.

So if I have free time I could comment to peoples poems in the Poetry area here, it'll be just like in TPS :).
And if anyone would like any criticism, comments and help with their poems feel free to PM me. I love helping fellow poets out, and I have a lot of personal experiece [years], creativity and poems under my belt.

:)

The Poetry and Lit forum has a subforum for stories and novellas. It can be found here: http://www.mysticwicks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=68

Any creative piece of writing you want to share will go somewhere in P&L though. :)

I havent really read any poetry, (ashamedly as i love poetry), i would have no problem, commenting on my feelings regarding other peoples work, but just one question, is there a mechanism in place to afford the writers some privacy in the face of constructive criticism? i mean, not all criticism is that nice, especially if you are being bluntly honest, which is the best form....

anyway just wondering...

EternalMaiden
November 22nd, 2005, 08:35 PM
That's nice :). I don't know about others, but I'm sure they might say the same. When I ask for criticism I appreciate all of it, but just think about it. If you're going to tell someone what they're doing wrong, it helps to tell them you see what they're doing right.

Especially if you're really blunt and foreward.

"Well, it has no rythm, rhyme scheme and it has plenty of spelling and grammatical errs. But, I like the 'vibe' you're trying to get across"

Ya bluntly hoenst is a good thing, but one type of criticism I do not like is when it leads to the poet being flamed and personally attacked. I have had that happen and that is why I was reluctant to even share my work here but so far so good :D

Well I'm going to bump this thread again due to a general apperthy from the people here. 1 Vote on the short story comp and not much better a turn out for the poetry comps. I have to say I am once again sickened by the general lack of interest most people here show for what their fellow community members are doing. I've tried the peppy and nice forum guide bit and that seems to get lost in the general babble here. Folks you wanna chatter we have a whole freking forum called "Just Talk" for that. This place is ment for announcements about what's happening in your forum as a whole not just some thread or other our dear resident site god posted MONTHS ago. Try giving the rest of the forums AND POSTERS a bit of apprechiation for the effort they put in. We have some very talented writters you know? Well no none of you would since you can't be bothered to give 5 mins of your time to go look and click a voting box.

I tell you sometimes I really question why I bother, I really, really do, and guess what folks I am not doing this to get attention for myself since I haven't entered anything in months. Call yourselves community members? You all should be ashamed of yourselves the amount of efffort you give back to this place.

Anyway rant off please return to your regular pointless drivel posting I've said just about all I have to on the matter.

For those of you who have any interest or for those of you I've shamed into looking beyond your own little self obbsecions here are the links to the current running competitions.

Due to her moving and haveing a lot on her plate right now Hymnia has had to step down as forum guide. Since Eternal Maiden and I also have bussy lives we feel it would be great to keep the level of forum guides on there up to three then the burden doesn't fall to heavy on anyone indervidual. So we are looking once again for nominations for a forum guide. Please go here and nominate someone you feel would do a good job of it :D
http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=127337

Anyone nominated who doesn't wish to be considered should decline the post in this thread also. Well keep this thread bumped for a little while to get some nominations and then I shall consult with Mol who would be suitable for the possition.

Best wishes folks.

It's time to write and here is your inspiration....

"I was often told that red hair was a sign of bad temper, and that green eyes were a sign of evil."

A doll
A music box
A Butterfly

Use the opening line, the three items need to be mentioned somewhere in the story and we are shooting for 1000 words.

Come and try your hand at short story writing.

Xirian is the WINNER of the June Poetry Challenge.

:dancy: :dancy: :dancy: :dancy:

Everyone congratulate her.

Here is her winning poem.

No Fine Line

At this moment,
Is Red what you truly desire?
This sacred life, its vivacious energy?
This fine line?

Can I be humbled by its course?
Or may I pity myself,
To make those who would,
Understand?

Droning on about this or that
Until the red heat rises in my face
Yes, the distinct red glow of anger,
Is when the mass consumption of another’s energy takes its toll.

Stillness is not an option,
Quiet is not the calm
It is the storm.
Brewed on this synthetic mirage of emotion,
This fierce competitor
This tremendous ego.

Deliverance would be welcome.
A way out could satisfy this fuse,
But in this life, that is not possible.

Life is precious, but painful
It consumes, yet soothes,
It reconciles as it destroys.
Until there is no fine line.

This vivacious energy, this sacred life,
All in Red, is what you will receive,
At this moment.

~Xirian~

When was the last time you just wanted to sit back and read some nice poems but was distracted by all the shinies on the net. Well now is your chance.

New poems get posted everyday, feel free to read and comment. There are short stories to get caught up in only to have it end and curse the writer for getting you all excited.

Poetry contests every month. A short story contest every couple of months to read and vote on.

Come support your web-local writers and always feel free to add your own writing as well.

So come on in, pull up a chair in front of the cyber fire, sit back and enjoy a nice enjoyable read!

I've posted this concern before.... if we post poetry here it is "published" and therefore often inellegeble to publication in Poetry journals.... how can we get around this? I would love to share my work that I'm gooming for publication but I don't feel I can right now because of this.

Well I think that by the term "published" that means actually being published in a magazine or book...or even at sites like Poetry.com as well...I don't think it would count if you posted your poetry here as being officially published.

Tanya.

I've moved this discussion into the Poetry and Literature Forum as this thread is mostly for announcements and such.

Please follow the link below to discuss it there, thank-you.
