Can anyone tell me why the circle is called a circle? It is cast as a sphere. And also, why is it cast as a sphere?
Blessed be

because you cant mark the sphere with a cord without it being a circle, and some say its a cone...

I think of it more as a cylander as the top and bottom are open *as above so below.. *
But generally it is called a circle as, well, circle flows better in songs and poetry, also because it is commonly accepted that a circle has no definitive beginning or ending.
"we are a circle, within a circle, with no beginning, and never ending"
another reason is because in some traditions groups stand in a circle around the alter *which in some trads is actually a round alter not a square one* A group of people, have yet to stand in a cone or a cylander shape for ritual that i know of.. i would be interested in seeing an erection of such a feet.

if you want, I can move this to the magic and rituals forum where
you might get more answers. Up to you though. And dont worry
I wasnt meaning that it doesnt belong here, just saying that they
talk a lot more about that stuff there.

My Beliefs in regard to circles:
A sphere IS circular in shape. When you "chart out" your area with stones for a "permanent" or "semi-permanent" circle, you can't really do it in 3D, so, one dimensionally, it's a circle. ;) You just envision it in 3D. :D
You cast it as a sphere so that you are surrounded on every side by it for protection. Remember, when you cast a circle you are between the worlds. You need protection from above as well as below from harmful energies. I see it as a bubble.
Also, soft circular shapes are Yin, which are female in aspect and represent the Goddess, in my book. :D
I hope this helped! :sunny:

I don't cast a circle for protection at all. Just to create a "more" sacred space. Guess I'm weird, I see nothing to need protection from.
I still wanna see a 3D circle.. that'd be pretty neat.. people standing on each others heads and stuff.. d00d. Like the cheerleading meet from planet wierd.
I'm demented. I need sleep.
Here bed bed bed bed. Where areeeeeee yoooooooooouuuuuuuu!

I'm sorry, I should have implied that a circle IS most always cast to create sacred space...and it creates protection too. (calling the quarters...the Guardians) ;)

Yeah, if I saw bad things, I'd probably be more stressed, and that's simply no fun.

I wonder if the circle is used because of the association to the wheel of the year. The continuous flow of energies from one point to the next. A circle is seamless, no one particular point greater or lesser than another. Just my guess here. :D

mm, because a circle is unbroken, and they're a special sphere around you; you're the center when you cast one, and as such you cannot be touched from outside. . . it creates a special little space for you to do what you need to do, or for you to feel and be safer.
My two cents, anyway ^^;

it is the dynamic of the circle that makes it powerful.
i too do not see the need for 'protection'. i do not call the 'guardians' to protect me. i invite the elements in all their glory, to add their energy to mine within the circle as i honor them.
casting the circle creates a temple, a sacred space suitable for the Gods.
the dynamic of the circle ensures that everyone is facing each other, and that nobody is in the 'dominant' position. the circle flows, and it is complete unto itself. it is beginning and end and beginning again. it is renewal and completion. it is the cycle of life, death and rebirth. it is the symbol of the wedding ring. it is balance.
i love circles. to me, they just feel natural, almost like home.

Sure. If you haven't sensed it it obviously isn't hurting you, therefore you might say it's nice to not know about these things. :)
