View Full Version : Lesson One

Romani Vixen
November 22nd, 2005, 09:28 PM
These lessons are based on my practice. I try to incorporate information for other popular avenues, but please… please… with all of this information, *use your intuition*! If you feel that a particular method of doing something isn’t right for you… don’t do it. If you aren’t sure, PM me and I can help you narrow down what it means for you. Meditate on it.

What is candle magic?

Candle magic is quite often incorporated into other forms of magic. It’s also considered to be one of the more basic forms, as it requires a minimum of time and equipment.

When working magic of any sort, the spell-caster is sending energy out into the world to attain a certain goal. Within candle magic, candles are used as a slow release battery of sorts. The candle is chosen with care, and ritual is undertaken in order to fill up that candle to bursting with energy aimed at getting a job or banishing sickness, or whatever it is that the caster chooses to fill it with.

Lighting the candle is a ritual in and of itself. This is sending forth the energy that was put into the candle. As the candle burns, more and more of that energy is being released and is working your will.

This last part is quite important. As with any magic, will power is key. That is what makes the magic work, and to me, that’s what magic *is*.

The history of candle making; a brief overview.

The earliest evidence that we have of candles dates to approximately the fourth century BC, in the form of clay candle holders in Egypt. Candles have been made from many things, such as insects, seeds, berries, bark, animal fats, and of course beeswax. Throughout much of western history, tallow (animal fat derived) was used to make candles, but the stench is quite bad. Beeswax has been rather popular throughout history, but it’s also expensive. Up until the 15th Century, candles were almost always of a taper variety. It was then, in Paris that molds for candles were created.

They’ve come a long way, and now we have a vast variety of materials available, including paraffin and soy!

Color in candle magic.

Ah, the power of color! Each and every color has power. We utilize this power within candle magic.

When choosing the color of candle, a few things must be considered:
· Color correspondences. Each color aids in a specific areas. Choose the one that closest fits your chosen purpose. If you need one color, and no other really seems to fit what you need, choose white. White contains all colors, and is an acceptable substitute.
· Time constraints vs. available candles. If you need to do a spell in at midnight, it’s now 11 pm, and you need a black candle. What do you do?
Astrology. Some people choose to incorporate the planets into their workings. This will be covered more later.

On to our correspondences!!!

Color correspondences:

White: A balance of all colors, cleansing, healing, truth, lunar energy. Some people choose this color to signify their Goddess; I personally don’t for various reasons, but do use it for the God. Signifies the spirit.

Yellow: Activity, unity, friendship, learning, concentration, persuasion, solar energy, gaiety. Signifies the Element of Air.

Orange: Joy, enthusiasm, business, goals, ambition. Sacred to the Goddess Brigit☺.

Gold: Money, luck, solar energy.

Pink: young love, innocence.

Red: Passion, love, lust, strength, courage, will power, war, career. Signifies the element of Fire.

Purple: Power, success, creativity, imagination, psychic prowess, divination, independence, royalty. Use to contact or ask the aid of the Ancestors.

Brown: balance, grounding, eliminates indecisiveness, concentration, study. Signifies the Element of Earth.

Blue: Meditation, loyalty, protection, healing, wisdom, harmony, peace, truth, dignity, reserve. Signifies the Element of Water.

Green: fertility, money, success, growth, spring, generosity, sympathy, rejuvenation. Sacred to the Goddess Danu☺.

Black: Opens the unconsciousness, banishing, release, change, transformation. I have used this color for the Goddess personally. Many people choose this color for the God.

☺If you follow specific Gods, research and meditate on each one to determine which colors they like the most!

Astrological Correspondences:

Some people choose to incorporate the power of the planets with their candle magic. If you want to draw the power of one of the planets, or to take on characteristics of one of the signs just choose the appropriate color!

Aries - Red

Taurus - Green

Gemini - Yellow or Orange

Cancer - Silver or White

Leo - Gold or Orange

Virgo - Dark Blue

Libra - Pink

Scorpio - Dark Red (Maroon) or Black

Sagittarius - Purple

Aquarius - Electric Blue

Pisces - Lavender

Specially shaped candles and their uses:

I’m sure that you’ve seen the pretty cat candle, or the skull shaped candle. Well, they have their uses too!

Cats are considered good luck and are wonderful messengers. Skulls are useful when contacting your Ancestors. Seven knob candles look like they have seven balls squished one on top of the other; these are used over a period of time, usually seven days. Human figures have their obvious connotations, to represent the self, another person or the Gods.

Just like everything else, use your intuition. If you see a nice mold or shaped candle for sale, think about what it could signify.

Creating your own correspondences:

By now we have seen that correspondences are a big thing in candle magic… and there’s more to come! But for now we’re going to be making correspondences!

Everything we come in contact has meaning to us. These meanings are correspondences. For example, the herb mugwort has healing properties physiologically (make a poultice, put it on a wound and it will help heal that wound). Therefore, I’d use mugwort in a spell for its likewise magical powers of healing.

To make your own correspondences, meditate on what you want to make correspondences for. When doing this for color, I like to take a piece of construction paper, clear my mind and feel what the color is telling me. Also, think about it logically. Blue is a color of protection because it’s the color of police, and their base function is to protect.

If you have any questions on the material, please post them here. The homework for this lesson will be in a separate thread.

Sorry but, what is the color correspondance for Capricorn? I wouldn't have noticed it's lack of presence if I wasn't a Capricorn myself.

I understood it to mean that we are to make our own correspondences. Which I think means we meditate to find a subject and color that correspond?

LadyCelt

This Is What I've Done

White: (air) Purity, protection and creation. I'd consider it air, like the clouds. It can occasionally be water due to white snow. I consider it this way by the Lord crarting light, and I associate whtie withthe purest light and energy. It means untarnished to me too, which works iwth purity or protection.

Yellow: (fire) I consider it to be youthful/joy and energy, particularly with fire and heat. It can mean a mood brightener and to help with depression.

Oarange: not sure of the element, but joyous and energetic. I consider it to be a healer and medical remedy color, espeically with sinuses since I associate iwth oaranges and viatmin C.

Red: (fire) Can be negative with rage and revenge and being firey hot. can be good and used for sexual things. .I assoiate red lipstick, red hair, red dresses etc with it for sexual energy.

Purple: (spirit) To me it means tranquility and aids in meditation. It is a mood and physical balancer.

Brown: (earth) I associate with trees and roots for wisdom and guidance. I also associate with deer in this color too.

Blue: (water or air) It is air with the blue sky. It is water and I associate with streams adn replenishing yourself. It can be used for daydreaming or replenishing needs.

Green: (earth) I associate it with new beginnigns with green leaves after they ecome a new and will eventually turn colors. I asociate witih a jouney due to walking on grass and connection to the earth.

Black: (spirit) I consider it to be the oldest thing and most historical, but also hardest to understand. black and darness to me are there before night. I also associate wtih a dark sky.

Ooops. I was sitting here waiting for an assignment. *red face* Guess I better get crackin'!

Hey ring I havent done one either. That is just how I took what she said to mean. But then she said that she would be posting an assignments thread so Ive been kinda waiting for that. Not sure if my understand is even correct. But I took it to mean like do a ritual or something using one of those colors to signify something. But I wasnt going to do it untill there was clarification.

I was doing the same thing. But... it probably wouldn't hurt to come up with my own correspondences anyway. Now it's a challenge. LOL. I like your idea too.

Willow Rosette
December 3rd, 2005, 07:45 PM
Does anyone ctually understand what a correspondence is? I was kinda waiting on the assignment thread for clearification on that. My earlier deffination was simply a guess.

ring_of_fyre
December 3rd, 2005, 10:14 PM
My understanding is that a correspondence is an association. Like certain herbs are associated with certain qualities, or the days of the week are associated with certain planets, or astrological signs associated with elements, etc.

Platinum Dove
December 3rd, 2005, 10:36 PM
A correspondence is something that is associated with something else. For instance, when you think of the color white, you may think of purity, emotions and spirituality. That is the correspondence for the color white for you. So when you need to do a spell for spirituality, then you might pick a white candle, or a white altar cloth.

Willow Rosette
December 3rd, 2005, 11:01 PM
So we are supposed to figure out what color corresponds to what for ourselves? Like associating green with money and yellow with warmth?

Platinum Dove
December 3rd, 2005, 11:06 PM
That's what I'm guessing.

nini2033a
December 4th, 2005, 01:11 AM
white- spirit, beginning anew, purity, innocence, clean, a new soul, baby,
Yellow- springtime, rebirth, happiness, spirit lifting,
orange-
red- fire, warmth, seduction, love, dealing with the heart,
purple- regal, psychic, dealing with other planes of existance
blue- healing, always moving like the sea, cool, deep, ever changing
green- fresh, like foods, earth, nature, money,
brown- of the earth, animals, nature,
black- still has a negative connotation for me, so I will say ending things, relationships, habits, deflecting things, maybe deflecting negative things so protection
I guess I am having a bit of difficulty with some of the colors and correspondance. I will have to give those more thought and edit this later,
Nini,

Based on my own dealings and use of candles and what I found from your posted info and from another site called Angelfire (http://www.angelfire.com).com.

Red - Passion, love, lust, strength, courage, will power, war, career.
Signifies the element of Fire

Purple - Power, success, creativity, imagination, psychic prowess, divination, royalty,

Black - Opens the unconciousness, banishing, realease, change, transformations

Goddess correspondence - Fire -
Brigit, Hestia, Pele, Vesta, Heartha

elemental - Salamander

From Angelfire.com -

Red - love, sex, passion, energy, courage
Orange - Strength, authority, success, joy
Purple - Spirituality, wisdom, psychic power
Black - Destruction of Negative energy
Lavender - Intutition, dignity, spiritual shield
Silver Blue - Awareness, meditation, moon, creativity

Now the colors that I have chosen are based on the colors that I tend to migrate to on my own during ritual or prayer.

Sorry bout that....

Capricorn color correspondence is Black. And the current Astrology class is here: http://mysticwicks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=106

Thanks to everyone for their concern. I am well. I don't have a net connection at home any longer though.

Good answers to what a corresponcence is! Further... When you see a red rose, you (often) think of love. There is nothing inherent about the red rose that says love, but the associations are built up through our lives, and everyone sees things in a slightly different way. This is why it's important for each person to make their own list. I'm sure that for some people, a red rose indicates loss. :)

To those who posted their corresponcence lists... KUDOS! I'll be posting the actuall assignment momentarially. Those who have posted their full corresponcence lists may choose to do it. There are a few differences, and you may find it useful.

My correspondences. Sorry if some of them seem weird, it's just what they mean to me. What they symbolise, what they mean, what they show me when I think about them, how they sing to me. I've never really thought about it extensively, but yeah, here you go. And, yes, I really can't think of anything for purple.

White: healing, purity, balance, Ma'at, doves, energy, light, clouds, peace, air, winds, protection, but only generally, to me it doesn't have a colour, it's ... like Sebek, He's protection to me, not a colour, it's invisible almost, protection

Yellow: the sun, Ra, the desert, sand, heat, flames, cats, roughness, abrasion, destruction (burning things), life, death,

Orange: fire, the sun, Djehuty, tis a weird colour. Tis giving off weird energy. Oranges-->fruit-->bringing things to their full potential, creation-harvest thing, reaping what you sow, passion and determination, different to red's passion though, longer burning, more persistent, like my cat who's trying to convince me to let her out at 11:30pm and I'm not budging  Sorry to drop that in, but yeah, it just struck me

Gold: Netjer, Ra, the sun, Sekhmet, Sebek to an extent though He prefers green and blue, Aset

Pink: joy, happiness, good times, Het-hert, friends, family, sociality, candy, sugar, sweetness, sweetening up things, personal relationships,

Red: anger, passion, love, deep, deep bonds, Set, Sekhmet, Ra, the sun, heat, Bast, sex, violence, intense emotions/experiences, everything passionately done, intense energy, vibrancy, war, blood, death, life, fast-burning energy

Purple: has me stumped. Nothing comes to mind at all. It's just purple. Magick was the only thing, and even then I'm almost likely to cross it off. I don't really connect it to anything. Is that possible? To not be able to connect it to anything? It sings of nothing to me.

Brown: Geb, the earth, forests, calmness, peace, practicality, construction, nature, Ptah, wood, physical things (making things, like), Wepwawet, I want to say Wesir as well, the Herus, eagles/hawks/birds of prey, sharpness of vision (physically and non-physically), cats

Blue: the Nun, creation, Amun-Atum-Ra-Ra-Ptah-Djehuty-Sebek-Bennu-<<insert Creator God here>>, water, the Nile, stillness, chaos, barrenness, potentiality, creativity, Aset, life, Nut, the sky

Green: Wesir, green things, plants, Sebek, Bast, fertility, growth, wealth -- not just material wealth, envy, jealousy, betrayal, treachery, taking things that aren't yours, living things, cats, Set to a certain extent, but not as much,

Black: Ptah, Wesir, fertility (black dirt is fertile dirt), very very earthy, raw, primaeval, deep, solid, cold and hot, solid and liquid, death to a certain extent, Yinepu, Kali-Ma, destruction, chaos, the Universe, spiralling nothingness, ancestors, the Duat, Nebt-Het, mourning, night,

There. Hope you find that ok.

Great list!!!!

It's ok if it means nothing. But... nothing is still something. We still have a use for the number '0', don't we? :) Think about it. What does nothing mean to you? Void? Pre-creation? I would almost associate it with the Nun, in Kemetic terms. (For those who aren't Kemetic, Nun is the waters of creation, also a Goddess... http://www.kemet.org/glossary/nun.html). Perhaps purple would be a good banishment color for you? :)

It's weird. Like, no matter how much I thought about it, it was just there, it was just purple, nothing more, nothing less. It wasn't nothingness, to me, that's black. Purple doesn't seem to bring anything to mind at all. I find it completely disconcerting to have a colour I don't seem to connect to, yet other people have their own meanings for it. It's very strange. I'm more perplexed by it than anything. I get what you mean by thinking about nothingness and what it means to me, but I'm not seeing purple. I dunno.

I used to count purple as one of my favourite colours, now it's like it's lost all the associations it once had, like it's not important anymore. Am I making any sense here at all? I'm trying to put into words what I see and feel when I think about purple. I hope I'm being coherent. It used to mean divinity to me, spirituality, but not anymore. Now, it's just purple. I have no idea how I've come to think like this. I'm all confuzzled, if you couldn't tell.

Argent, the confuzzled one

Now the colors that I have chosen are based on the colors that I tend to migrate to on my own during ritual or prayer.

Red and black are what I like to use if I am seeking Kali specifically.

I use my blue and white "shabbat" Kosher candles for strong and serious requests,

currently my altar has orange and black and I use white and blue tealights for every day things and for when someone requests one of me.

SO - based on that I guess that blue and white candles are what gives my ritual power. And also they are what I consider part of my Priestess work.

(I kinda felt like I needed to add a bit, after seeing some of the other correspondences. I guess I figured it out a bit... :shhhh: )

Red - love, passion, sencerity
Yellow - spring, wealth, hope
White - freedom, purity, winter
Black - subconsious, sleep
Orange - happiness, summer
Gold - wealth, the sun
Pink - Children, women
Brown - Earth (dirt, ground), self animals
Green - Ocean, others, plants
Blue - water, calm

Are these okay?

Romani Vixen
January 11th, 2006, 03:46 PM
Those are great! Do gradually work on expanding the list.

Eventually what everyone should have in their BoS (or whatever you use), is a full list of all primary and secondary colors, perhaps even terciary. Each of those colors will have a list of things that you associate with it. The full list, with all color associations, should have every emotion, problem, and solution that you will ever want. Yes... this is a *very* long list. But that's ok. :)

Am I making sence? :)
