What is the best way to make a smudge stick?

To be bluntly honest, I've got no idea.
Thats the beauty of an occult or new age shop. Everything is already made up for you and sealed in nice little pachets.
Maybe someone else around here knows. I wouldn't doubt it.

you have to wrap the herbs, like sage and juniper or what have you. and tie it in to a tight bundle. with some kind of natural string such as hemp.
that doesn't stink when you burn it.
and the herbs should be pretty dry but not brittle.
hope this helps

I think there were some threads in the Green Room. I'll see if I can find them.

i'm sorry for the dumb question, but please bear with this newbie.. lol But what are smudge sticks for, and how do you use them?? i have been hearing them mentioned a bunch here lately, and i was wondering what they were. I heard they are good for cleansing tarot cards, but how do you use them?
Sorry for the annoyance of a newbie question!

not a problem autumn joy.
smudge sticks are tightly tied bundles of herbs usually sage, cedar, juniper etc. but could be made out of any good smelling plants and things.
found in new age and pagan shops.
you light the end and get it going good. they produce quite a bit of smoke. they are good for cleansing almost anything with the element of air.
and in the green room you could find most anything you want
good luck

A couple of folks have explained (& very well, I might add!) what smudge sticks are (sweetgrass was left out... ooooooooooooh, sweetgrass...). You can also make a smudge 'pot' by placing sage, sweetgrass, cedar, incense, etc in a container (usually metal or ceramic... something non-flammable). To use either the sticks or pot, light the sage etc, blow on it 'til you've got quite a bit of smoke going, & place your cards (or whatever object you wish to cleanse) directly into the smoke. To cleanse an area, such as a room, house, circle, etc, or a person, you might use a feather (you'll probably want a fairly good sized one) or smudge fan (generally made of two to four feathers attached to some sort of handle) to 'wave' the smoke throughout the space (in a room, be sure to get into the corners really well). If you're doing your home, don't forget spaces like closets, bathrooms, hallways, basements, attics, etc (at least, if you want to be thorough...). I've even smudged inside cabinets & cupboards, when the house felt particularly 'icky'.

Here's the link to one of the threads on smudge sticks. There were others if you do a search.

I agree Love the Sweetgrass But do not forget the sage when useing it
Sweetgrass attracts spirits and sage provides protection the 2 of them used together will prevent unwanted Guests!!! if you know what I mean!!

Sherry, those are my two favourite combinations for smudging for the same reasons. I may add to them but always sage & sweetgrass.
