My boyfriend asked me a question about Wicca and I wasn't sure how to answer.

What is the "goal" of Wicca? Why practice it? What's the point?

That's what he wants to k now and it really stumped me.

Why does one practice any religion? To connect to god/dess. The players, roles and words change, but in the end that's what it all boils down to.

Wicca has its particular ways to do so, which include things like a duotheistic viewpoint, belief in magic and reverence for nature.

Your boyfriend may be thinking of religions that view the world as "broken;" practicing the religion is the "fix." The goal of Christianity is to go to heaven; the goal of Vipisana Buddhism is to acheive Nirvana.

Wicca views the world as whole and perfect. The goal is to worship Her, to balance ourselves in Nature's ways, and to deepen our relationship with the Gods, including through acts of Love & Pleasure.

All good answers thus far, but I thought I would add this. When I was first beginning and still very much under my original mentor's wing, I was told this: Wicca is transformation. It is recognizing those things that can be improved, and then doing so. If you can't find anything particular to improve, then improve it all! It is a constant movement forward, toward a higher purity, a higher responsibility, a higher self in all ways. Can I/you/we ever be truly "perfect" then? Well, yes and no. No, because there will always be room for new transformation. Yes, because we are exactly what we were meant to be.

:) Wicca is Transformation. (On top of all that other stuff they already told you.)

Wicca has a goal? I have been Wiccan for years and I know of no such goal.

It is my religion and that is all. I believe in the Goddess and God and all the deities and that they can influence our lives.

I believe in the Wiccan Rede and the Law of Three.

I believe in the moral foundation of Wicca and that it is in our best interest to try to live by those moral teachings.

I believe in reincarnation.

So, what was that about goals?

Wicca is a religion. And, like any other religion, it is dependent on the belief of the followers of that religion. You either believe it or you don't.

Wicca itself has no goal.

However, one might hope that individual Wiccans may have the goal of self-improvement through understanding and practice of their faith.

Divine union. Self improvement (tranformation is the *perfect* description, Erincelt!) is just one way (and a good one) at going about this. I'm not a sinner, I never fell from anything (except my bike!)...

But Wicca in itself doesn't really define a goal for itself. (We're going to be the biggest, bestest religion ever!) It's the Wiccans themselves who have goals. ;)

I think that one of the big questions we have to get past is "who's Wicca?" I mean, I am in total agreement, from a personal perspective with those who have written above that there is no inherent goal within Wicca, or at least within "their Wicca". However, if we examine some other quite influential theorists, such is not always the case.
Let us look at the Jungian spin given to Wicca by Vivienne Crowley (and don't think that I'm dissing it - I like much of what she says, and respect her greatly), but this makes it pretty clear that the goal of Wicca is the same kind of psychic individuation that is the goal of Jungian Analysis.
For many of those who stress that Wicca is an initiatory mystery tradition, it is also true to say that there is a goal - the same goal that the gnostics had of getting out of physicality, and merging with pure spirit.
Also I think that the self-identity of Wicca as a "nature religion" is questionable - yes, there are many Wiccans who do practice a nature based spirituality, but there are very many more who haven't yet got over that body / spirit dichotomy that the modern world inherited from the gnostics, via Augustine, St Paul, and Descartes.
