I'm so proud of myself, and even more proud of the kid... my sister brought the boys she babysits over today, and they decided to come in my room. i had been making doggie sweaters for my chihuahua, the boys saw the yarn, and wanted to learn how to crochet. I figured i'd teach them the chain stitch so they could make a bracelet or something... well, the 5 year old got bored really quickly, and left, but the 6 year old stayed and learned! he made a chain long enough to fit around his head, so i slip stitched it together, and made it a necklace. i figure he could show his mom, and maybe she would teach him more later on. I am just really proud of him, he has built towers out of jenga blocks, and they look pretty detailed, he's very visual/spacial, like me, and i just think thats awesome. it took me a while to figure out how to show him right-handed, i'm a lefty, but he caught on quick, within minutes! I tried to teach my brother a few months ago, he's 14, and couldn't even understand the concept to do one chain stitch... so i didn't think i could do it, but i did! too bad i only have the rest of this week to spend with the boys before they move and switch babysitters, or i would try to teach him more... oh well, i know, this thread is pretty pointless, but i am very proud of myself, i must have been glowing the minute i realized he could do it!

That rocks. It's really good to encourage kids to be creative.

Good for you, and that gives me some re-inspired thoughts to keep working at this with my DD. She got a crochet kit for her b-day and we were trying to too learn togethter, but since I had no clue, it was really hard to help her. Now that I have the basics down, I should go back again.

PS how cute to be making doggie sweaters :)

That's great :) I've been trying to teach my daughter (7yrs old) how to crochet for a while and I'm having a hard time doing it. She's left handed and I'm right... I can't seem to get around that in teaching her :( I did teach her how to make a chain without a hook the other night. She made it long enough for me to single crochet it into a bracelet for her. She did good at making the chain all the same size... it's just showing her how to hold a hook that is a major problem. Hopefully we can get past that the more dexterity she gets in her fingers/hands.

Winter Wolf, put a mirror next to your hands while you crochet, she can look in the mirror and it will be the right way round for her. My brother is a lefty and that way one of the ways my Mum used to teach him stuff.

That is a good idea Rain! I'll have to give that a try with her :) Thanks!

My mom taught me how to knit and crochet when I was around 7. When I was around 15 she had me help her with crocheting angora sweaters and knitting tri-color sweaters for work. I still remember some of it.

well, today is my sisters last day babysitting for the boys, and yesterday the 6 year old told her that he wanted to come over to spend time with me so that he could do more crocheting. His mom thought it was cute, apparantly... i know that she crochets, but i guess she doesn't have a whole lot of time to do it anymore, but i hope that she will take some time to teach her son a bit more than i can...
