*picks up a wet Miu Sher, grins, winces when clawed for trying to dry her off*

Hethert, I was going to give you some tips on how to survive those first two weeks, but I got the flu before I could do so. sowwy! :hugz:

Yay, Ishtara! :)
what a fun story about the lady at the ceremony.
There is a group called Ta-Noutri in France. they have a website that's rather pretty and the people there are really nice. ^^ I go there to brush up on my french when I'm not taking french classes.

*wonders where Ptah is*

Thank you so much for the congratulations :)

How is everybody doing?
HetHert, I hope that your weight loss plan is going well and that the cravings are not too bad. Hang in there! :hugz:

Zephyrstorm, sorry to hear that you caught the flu. I hope you have completely recovered now.
Thank you for letting me know about that French Ta-Noutri group, I had never heard of them. The French in general are not a religious bunch and certainly not very open-minded when it comes to spirituality, so no wonder such groups do not get much publicity!
Felicitations pour ton excellent francais! How long have you been learning French for? :)

Shepenmut, you always have the best emoticons! I love that Canadian flag-waving little guy! :D
How have you been?

I'm feeling much better - still have something of a cough.

My minor is French - I've been studying two years now - and I love it. Trying to get better at reading - so I'm taking a French Lit class now. If I wasn't completely ready to get out of school I'd so be going for my major.

Hotep Redshire!

Sorry that life is not fairing well in the lazy roomie/coven member department...You could have a come to Ma'at talk with her and let her know that she is skating and treading on thin ice that is melting...and the only way that the foundation that she's standing upon will become stable with you and the other house members would be if she would GET A JOB! Let her know thats the only way she's gonna be able to stay. I've been in your situation and believe me if you don't take care of this sooner than later the resentment will be almost unfixable, if its not already at that point.

Zephyrstorm, I just registered on that French forum you told me about. It looks very interesting indeed. Do you post there regularly? My username there is Ishtar, hopefully I will see you around!

Good to have you here. :)

I haven't had time to post on Ta-Noutri, and when I have time, I get shy. Sometimes my french just vanishes. ~_~ it did that on monday at the French Club meeting on campus, but that was just after an intense art history class.

I brought some appetizers to go with the sushi trays. Help yourselves, we have gyozas, edamame and spinach goma-ae :)
[Now Shepenmut, not that this is a challenge or anything, but if you manage to find a gyoza smiley, I will be VERY impressed! ;) ]

I hope everyone is well. As for me, I am not really having a good week

Honestly, I usually talk to my Mom and Dad about what's going wrong in my life. Otherwise, a useful exercise I lifted wholesale from _A Circle Within_ by Diane Sylvan (It's about Wicca, but some of the exercises are wonderful) is to make a list of the things which leave you feeling fulfilled, take a few days doing it and then make sure to do some of them every day.

Or you can do what my friend Nisi suggests (and it works really well) which is to make a list of positive only things about your life.
For example:
I have great friends, a beautiful cat, a sweet dog and a husband that is the envy of all my girlfriends. ^_^
I have a decent apartment, a fantastic car, and I'm a success at school.
Mostly this exercise helps you keep things in perspective.

Also walking, spending time taking care of yourself (bubble baths, anyone?), splurging on something simple but meaningful for yourself.
and my personal favorites: Hugs and spending time with friends _pounce_ I know I'm so mushy and soft-hearted, but it works for me. :fpeace:

I got lots of sleep last night, which helped some and this weekend I am planning on spending as much time outside as possible. That usually helps me unwind and put things into perspective.

I have an announcement to make: I was already quite impressed with the Japanese robata smiley that Shepenmut posted yesterday...

At long last I uploaded the pictures taken during my oath of Canadian citizenship.

*Of course* the only one that is not too blurry had to be the one where I am making goofy faces :nyah: ... oh well, at least you can see the Book of Coming Forth by Day I used to take my oath.

[I know, I know, I should not have made goofy faces during such an official ceremony... young people these days!!!]

The other two (out of focus) pictures with the Citizenship Judge will give you an idea of what ol' Ishtar looks like when she is not goofing around ;)

Does anyone know of a good online resource for Egyptian-themed jewelry?
I am looking for a small ostrich feather pendant or a Ma'at pendant that I could show as a template to a local jeweller. So far I have not found much, but I hardly ever shop online, so I thought I would ask here :)

I know that sometimes Ebay has great stuff - I watch a drool and think about buying but never do. Otherwise, I haven't had much luck.

My husband wants a nice Yinepu necklace. everything I find is pewter and I'm wanting to get him a silver one.

Thank you for the links Ma'at's_Feather!

Shepenmut, I tried to run a search for your Mut pendant, but to no avail. I suppose you already checked Ebay; they only seem to have papyri.

Ishtara
February 23rd, 2006, 02:14 AM
Three statues, well done! Your shrine is going to look great! :)

I would like to get three myself: Djehuty, Yinepu and Ma'at. I would really like a winged statue of Ma'at, but I remember Nebra saying that the material she uses does not allow her to make wings strong enough to be shipped.

You know, I think my fruitless search for a Ma'at pendant I like is giving me a few creative ideas. There seems to be little "egyptologically correct" jewellery on the market. Most reproductions of authentic pieces seem to be rather poorly made and as for the contemporary designs... people do not know what they are talking about. A good third of the so-called Ma'at pendants I saw actually depicted a winged Aset or Nebt-Het.
I have always been attracted to jewellery making but never took it up... maybe I should try to come up with my own designs and look into making a few pieces...

Ishtara, thank you, though I'm beginning to run out of shrine space for offerings

re: Ma'at: you could see if she'd do a plaque for you to hang or prop up in your shrine - that way the resin would be strong enough to handle the wings. :)

I had the same problem with the design for my Dad. I wanted Him to be ithyphallic, but she said the packaging and the delivery would... castrate Him. sooooooo... *sigh*

its funny how Aset and Het-hert are everywhere and even sold under eachothers names. its only recently that ive been able to find anything Ma'at related. including Ma'at winged statues. one of my favorite ebay sellers has so really good moderately priced Ma'at statues. (both winged)

http://stores.ebay.com/ATAKA-IMPORTS

and ebay in general is a good place to find Ma'at things. but ive noticed also, that is it says Ma'at, good chances are that its really Aset or Het-hert. gosh..... some people just dont know.......

I'm taking my dog on long walks in the woods three times a week, and otherwise feeling completely swamped with school - I have to do an ethnographic study - and I want desperately to change my topic now that it's been approved - but won't because I chose the more practical topic of the ideas I had.

I also have to choose between two other topics for another class, and the topic that most grabs at me as the fewest sources available. *grumble*

In other news - I'm giving a presentation on Kemetic and Tameran religions this Thursday for the Pagan Student Alliance. so that brings me to a question... which I think I will put in a new thread. ^_^

'ello all.

my day started out bad, late to work, tired, pains... But the sunrise was beautifull! Work was insane (my job is a no-brainer and usually boring as all hell), when I got off my SO wasn't arround, so no sushi. I'm nearly broke from the whole roomate situation, and was about to smoke my last cig... when I found a nearly full pack! Wonderfull! So I go down to the comp lab to finish a favor for a friend, my stomach grumbling. I run into a classmate who has pizza she's trying to get rid of!

so now my tummy is happy and I can get my nic-fix. I love it when days throw you little surprises like that. :)

oh yeah... and I'm thinking of going through with the RPD and becoming Shemsu. So I have a question for y'all; do you have to take any crazy oaths in order to become a Shemsu? I read somewhere a while ago that you agree to accept the Nisut as your king, and that you swear to give your life for her...? or something like that?

Are you even allowed to inform me about any oaths I may have to take/give? Or is it all "oathbound", or similar restrictions?

Re: the Shemsu oath - I respect Hemet (AUS) and I appreciate everything that She does for us, but I see Her as a Teacher more than as my King. A friend as well.
She's never struck me as the type to lord Her position in the House over others, and I've never seen her do it.
I'm sure the others will offer their insights.

Sorry to interrupt the conversation about RPD and the Shemsu oaths, but I just received a leaflet in the mail about the upcoming Hatshepsut exhibition at the MET and I am *excited*!!!

The exhibition will run from March 28 to July 9.
I am thinking of taking a three-day trip to New York to go see it from May 20 to 22 (the 22nd is a holiday in Canada, so it is convenient for me).
Is anyone else planning on going?

oh yeah... and I'm thinking of going through with the RPD and becoming Shemsu.

Or is it all "oathbound", or similar restrictions?

em hotep!

The RPD doesn't have any oaths/vows to take.
The Shemsu oaths/vows are able to be interpreted. I don't know if I am allowed to tell you them, so I'll err on the side of caution and not, but I am sure I can tell you that, if you do go through the Shemsu initiation and at any stage feel uncomfortable, you are able to question the Nisut (AUS) and back out if required. She NEVER forces you to do anything.

This is a very good question, HetHert... given my keen interest in hieroglyphics and the fact that I love studying, I would probably have enjoyed being a scribe.

Other than that, I also love travelling and Lebanon is one of my favourite countries, so I would have been very interested in being part of the Egyptian settlement in Byblos. What would I have done there? Probably overseeing the merchants and implementing commercial/administrative processes... pretty much what I am doing in this lifetime, actually.

Of course, for both careers, it would help if I were a man... just a minor detail ;)

I love bellydancing... I danced last Saturday, actually. I am looking into going to Monday classes with a friend of mine, but I hope the teacher does not use zils (finger cymbals) too much... I am useless with zils!!!

How is everyone else's bellydancing endeavours going, by the way? Wasn't it you, Zephyrstorm, who were going to get together with a group of friends to dance?

Woohoo, today is my first day off (I took one week off work) and believe me it feels GOOD! My first vacation in two years. Yay!

Well, not quite, but almost. Six of us are chipping in for a birthday present for a friend of ours who is very much into Indian dancing. We want to give her a beautiful sari that she can wear for her next performance. And since I am the only one with free time this week, guess who gets to go sari shopping? :D

That was exciting because it may have ment a day off from school (Oregonians freak out when there is white stuff on the ground, lol). Unfortunately it wasn't cold enough for it to stick... but I told my roomie that he shoulda eaten more onions... :D

The idea is to go to the park more often for such things - I'm looking at new costume stuff now, as well as a new drum.

I have long wondered why chew onions for Bast. The link doesn't explain why an onion, other than it has the shape of the sun. Onions are also the shape and color of the moon. Plus there were plenty of other edible plants that more closely represented the sun. I'm just not sure I buy that explaination. If anyone does come up with anything on it from antiquity please let me know, I've been looking for years.

Zephyrstorm, decorating a room with saris is a brilliant idea!
I once went to a fashion show where the whole space was done in Indian and Thai silk panels, it was gorgeous.
At some point I bought a half-dozen of inexpensive raw silk sarongs that I intended to hang on my walls or use as a backdrop to display art. Unfortunately, it is around the same time that my dustmite allergy came back with a vengeance, so surrounding myself with fabric panels probably was not the best thing to do... but yes, decorating with saris is a great idea.

Beer, Bread and onions... Thank the Gods that I don't live in ancient Egypt. I need more variety.

From what I've found, it seems the latest theory is that the concentric circles of eternity are represented by the onion.

However, one name for the onion was hetchu from the root hetch, which mean to lighten or brighten and, also, the color white. There is also the name hudg for an onion and hudj means to overlay.

I can't be sure about the following but it does appear the onions were white, not yellow or red.

Frugal Egyptian peasants adopted the onion to relieve the monotony of their diet, often eating them raw. Egyptian onions were said to be large, white and mild.

The Pharaoh Cheops paid for labor on the Great Pyramid in onions, garlic, and parsley.

Egyptian mummies set out for the afterlife with a stock of onions carefully wrapped in bandages, looking like another little mummy.

Ancient Egyptian leaders took an oath of office with their right hand on an onion.

As early as the building of the Pyramids, the onion was a part of the basic rations for sailors because it helped to prevent scurvy during long voyages without fresh foods. Army quartermasters valued it for the same reasons.

In ancient Egypt, the onion symbolized eternity because of its circle-within-a-circle structure. Paintings of onions appear on the inner walls of the pyramids and in the tombs of both the Old Kingdom and the New Kingdom.

The onion is mentioned as an Egyptian funeral offering and is depicted on the banquet tables of the great feasts. Frequently, a priest is pictured holding onions in his hand or covering an altar with a bundle of their leaves or roots.
http://www.sweetonionsource.com/lore.html

The onions the Egyptian grew are not what are called Egyptian Onions, nor are they grown any longer in Egypt. The newer, sweeter and more disease resistant varieties are now grown there.

I still haven't found proof for any reasons the Egyptians chewed onions for Bastet. In fact, there are accounts that say it was considered sacrilidge to break an onion or leek with one's teeth.

However, I did find out that this particular festival held was prior to the beginning of harvest, from the end of January to mid-February even March (erroneus dates possibly due to inaccurate calendars). This was also the time they held the feast of Min, another harvest ritual. Shemu means harvest, summer and incantaions and the root word shem means hot, as well. Perhaps, they linked Bast with the heat of the onion, the sun and the harvest; and perhaps they were allowed on that day to bite the onion.

I'm still looking for info on this subject if anyone comes up with anything.

Just thought I'd share what I found out....

wow at Ptah's experience. So Ptah (and anyone else who wants to answer), when did you first fall in love with our beloved Land?

I began to search the Bible at a young age. I wanted to understand why the time of miracles was over and why the "men of God" of today were powerless. Into my adult life I studied the Kabbalah and started to practice High Magicks. One of the things I noticed in my research of the Bible was that every time the Hebrews came out of Egypt or were going in miraculous things would happen. I put 2 and 2 together and figured out that what the Jews were doing mystically had most likely come out of Egypt. Once I began to study Egypt, I soon realized that the seals and binding required by the YHWHist practices were really just a means to subjugate the gods of Egypt. Anyway, I began to look into Egypt (Ta mri) then.

Thats why, I don't know exactly when... probably in another life.

I may ask you for some recommendations to take my studies one step further. I am done with my Collier and Manley book and I am having a hard time finding intermediate-level books.

Well I went to the astrology retreat with the "crud" but didn't let it take away from the entire experience and I had a BLAST!! Thanks you guys for endulging my whining, and ponying up the energy and hugz and well wishes. My mind stayed clear enough for me to absorb all the info and I actually impressed a very highly regarded matriarch in the pagan community so that supercharged me. Its amazing what validation from elders can do!

Anyways. If anyone has birth information for me I don't know how well I can do but I need to practice chart reading. I'm by no means anywhere near ready to give people indepth readings but I wouldn't mind coming back with "baby sentences" about what I see in the chart and getting yays or no's about how accurate I might be. You can pm me with info...you don't have to equate it to anyone specific...you could just give me initials. It doesn't have to necessarily be you, it could be friends or relatives. I'll need date of birth, location of birth, and as close to the time of birth as possible, if you don't know the time thats alright, it only affects the ascendent. Thanks!

Hello everyone!
It's good to see the ol' Lotus alive again!

Thanks for the welcome back, Brandon Bee :)

Hello Shepenmut, hello Zephyrstorm! How's life treating you at the moment?

I have not been here much as we are going through major changes at work and it is a little stressful. But I still managed to enjoy the gorgeous spring weather and spend time outside. And I am looking forward to going to New York later this month!
So all things considered, life is good

It's finals and I'm only in MW long enough to breathe a moment of free time before diving back in. (Technically finals are next week, but all my profs scheduled papers and some of the finals this week -_- )
Then I'll be all graduated and stuff. heh.

So I'm stressed out and ready to flee the campus, and not wanting to leave... the campus. *nodnod*
But life is alright. Be better after the 13th.

"Mout was represented by a female griffon vulture. Commonly called a griffon this timorous bird has a wingspan of up to ten foot but feeds off dead animals. Its zoological name is gyps fulvus."

Aa Nebt Heru Khenti Hebit Sema Ntchm, Anetch Hrk!

Today is the day we celebrate of the rising of Nut and the union of the divine lovers.

During our rite we take healing requests. If anyone would like us to work toward healing on their behalf, send me a PM. We will begin at appx 4pm CDST. Please let me know by 3pm CDST, so we can get a stand in for you during the ritual.

Hey Ptah, that was very kind of you to take healing requests. I hope that people in need of healing, for themselves or for others, saw your message and that the rite went well :)

Hello everyone! How is everybody doing?
This thread is a little slow at the moment... I guess some people are busy with final exams, I hope many others are having fun in the sun

As for me, I am getting ready to fly to New York at the end of this week and I cannot believe that this weekend I will be seeing the Hatschepsut exhibit at the Met! :boing:

Got a new Doumbek today as my present to myself. Next month I'll be heading off to visit with my mother for a few weeks - taking the cat and dog on the twelve hour drive, should be interesting.

in the meantime, I'm resting relaxing and going shopping to make my wardrobe more... professional. :p

Speaking of which...

I am back from the Met!

The quality of the pieces displayed at the Hatshepsut exhibit is wonderful. No photos allowed in the special exhibits, alas, but I did take many pictures throughout the rest of the Egyptian department.
They are way too many to link here (I did, after all, spend 8 hours at the museum on Saturday and 3 more hours on Sunday...), but I am going to open a Flickr account so that you can all see them.

Meanwhile, it is my pleasure to show you William's rounded blue snout and Miu Sher's feline beauty

Hi Yamen! (this be Neheti) :boing: _wedgie_

Ankhet,
Art History, naturally. :D Can't live without my art books. Hoping to focus on Ancient art, but if that doesn't work out, I'll see if I can't concentrate on either the Pre-Raphaelites, the German Expressionists, or Art Nouveau.

In an ideal universe, I'd get to go work at the Getty Museum, or at the Mucha in Prague. *sighs dreamily*

Great pictures, Shepen! That big black sarcophagus in the main hallway is really impressive, isn't it?

I had my RPD last night, yay! Was kinda worried that Yinepu might not show up, but I have known that He's my Father for the past 5 years... that just confirmed it. *laughs*

Nut wasn't a surprise, and I had a feeling Aset would show up in one form or another.

Hello,
I've never posted here before, so hello!
I'm a devotee of Seshat, Djehuty, and Aset, but I'm not Kemetic (I'm a eclectic witch with a strong Dianic leaning).
All three are very prominant in my path.
:hugz:
and I hope I haven't offended anybody!

Hello Minerva Mind!

Welcome to the Blue Lotus!
Help yourself to a drink and meet our mascots, William the hippo, Miu Sher the cat and the Lounge Lizzards.

I hope you will like it here. I myself honour and serve Djehuty and you will see that we have other devotees of Seshat and Aset here :)
I am looking forward to learning more about your path. We do not have that many eclectics here, so it is always interesting to hear other points of view.

:fpraise: Thank you for welcoming me here. I'm new to this forum because I've never really considered myself Kemetic. However, Djehuty has been wanting me to come here so maybe he's telling me something.
:hugz: and thankyou!

Thank you for the welcome! :hugz:
What would to you love to hear about?
Ill give you the basics first. I call myself an eclectic Dianic witch though I'm considering dropping the "Dianic" due to my ever increasing devotion to Djehuty. My path also partly reconstructionist because I focus on Rome and I look at the intertwining of Goddesses and Gods between Rome, Greek, Egypt and British Celtic. So while I am eclectic, I do keep between a certain period of time (even if it is quite large). The only difference is an Indian Goddess (Sarasvati) and a female bodhisattva (Kwan Yin).
Since I love my books and writing, both play an important part of my spirituality. As do herbs and divination.
If theres anything else, just ask. :)

but why wouldn't you want to move to NY or CA? I would love to live in California.
