I just realised that I am coping with the summer heat much better than usual this year, which is a very good thing. I usually end up looking like a freshly boiled lobster after 15 minutes in the sun, accompanied by a throbbing heat-induced headache. No such thing so far this year. Yay!
It must be a canadian thing! I do the same thing too! No matter how much sunscreen I put on (5 times a day, SPF 45, thank you very much) I burn!
Maybe because after such cold and dark winters, we aren't used to the light anymore?
Which reminds me... Yesterday, while I was working in my store, a girl comes up to my cash. We talk abit and she tells me that she just moved from California from Montreal. She says she loves it. It's a culture shock but it's amazing! (I guess she finds old Montreal quaint)
Then she says "I have no Idea how I'm going to deal with the winters! They go down to 40 below!" with this look of shock on her face.
me and a coworker look at her, shrug and say "yup! about right"
she looks as if we're crazy to not be as concerned as her.
It was just sort of funny. That in itself must be a culture shock.

Everything is relative, you're quite right. And I am very thankful for the temperate climate here in Vancouver.
Being born and raised on the French Riviera, you can imagine the amount of ranting and complaining I used to do when my friends or family wanted to drag me to the beach for the day! :awilly:
I think that my main issue is with humid heat, actually. I lived for a while in the Middle East where it gets extremely dry in summer and I was OK, even though the first few days were uncomfortable.
And every time I went to Egypt, I was so excited that I did not have time to think about the heat! ;)

/me needs some chocolate... dark chocolate...
So yeah, we took Iheb to the dermatologist yesterday to get the stitches removed and find out the biopsy results. Leg still doesn't look great, although it's better than it was. Unfortunately, no biopsy results yet - they think they'll be able to call us with the results on Thursday or Friday. *sigh*
<grumblegrumblegrumble>
So anyway, Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it - hopefully the fireworks will go off tonight - we're under a severe thunderstorm/flash flood watch here in the desert today. (go figure)

*hands you dark chocolate* I always have dark chocolate around - it's my default offering for Bast. :)
*eats chocolate and sips tea* It's threatening rain here too, but I don't mind; we're just planning on playing rpgs tonight.
I keep job hunting, but my desire to do what I want to do for a living rather than what I need to do for a living keeps getting in the way - who wants to slave away in a cubicle when one can paint or study art and get paid for it or go for a doctorate. *sigh* Thankfully we're doing okay - I just need the job to pay on student loans... which wouldn't be due if I could rush off to school for my Masters and my Doctorate right now. (but I can't do that with hubby not finished with his degree just yet.)
:p stupid loans.
I'm also looking at taking some continuing ed classes in German so that I'm a better pick for my graduate school choices.
So anyway, Happy 4th to my fellows, and Happy day in general to those of you who aren't in the US.

We just watched the fireworks around the neighborhood and across the valley - up here on Sunrise Mt. you can see "downtown" easy, and if we head a few blocks SW to the main road, we can see the entire "Strip", too. Nice view!

The weekend was good, thanks! We saw Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and our temps stayed around 100 (+/- 5) so it wasn't *too* bad - though the humidity was kinda high for us (in the 30%+ range) so everybody was wearing wrist bands and head bands and trying to deal with sticky clothing - something we are definitely NOT used to any more.

So I see I forgot to tell y'all about Iheb's biopsy results... sure enough, he has Weber-Christian panniculitis. http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic2429.htm
Mind you, 75% of these cases are found in women between the ages of 30-60... considering I've had the exact same symptomatology for about 19 years now, I'd guess he inherited it from me, poor kid. The next time I end up with one, the dermatologist said they'd biopsy it for me so I can have a definitive diagnosis too.
/me takes another swig
Luckily, this form of panniculitis isn't really anything horrible - it just looks and feels horrible if it isn't treated right. Sort of like a bad burn from a motorcycle muffler, ya' know? Having the proper diagnosis will go a long way to getting the proper treatment sooner rather than later, so it's all good. :)

/me wanders in and asks for a tall, cold one... of just about anything... <heh> and scritches Mur Sher behind the ears, who has deigned to join my table (right in the middle of it, in fact)
I slept most of the day yesterday because I think I'm coming down with something... and because of the heat. We hit 122 up here on the hill. Yes, we have A/C, but just cuz it's running don't mean it's working. *sigh*
/me sucks up a gallon or so of Gatorade
So of course I was up ALL night. I had to work anyway, and then pressed DH's work jacket, shirt and slacks for his interview at work this morning. He's up for a promotion to the VP slot. He thinks the interview went very well, and they should know in a day or two which one of them will get the job - but they are definitely promoting from in-house. <G>
I was pretty durned tired by about 8:00 a.m. and went to sleep for a couple of hours, but once again it was just too warm in the bedroom. The only refuge is in the computer room where we finagled a window unit (the windows slide open sideways, if you can imagine). Meanwhile, even though we're getting 65 degree air out of the vents, it's still 80-90 in the rest of the house. My electric bills are averaging $400 so far this summer. The compressor is constantly on and will burn out soon, I fear. Actually, that might not be so bad - if the unit totally dies, they have to replace it.
Yeah, I called the landlord - again - fourth time this year. First question was "What's wrong with it NOW?" Second question was "Have you been changing the filters?" *sigh* Yes, we even paid over $400 for some guys to come out and clean out the vents, acid wash the coil, and put in a brand new metal filter that you just clean once a month and never have to replace (well, it's guaranteed for 7 years, anyway). It didn't help. :P
/me finishes up a second gallon of Gatorade.
Sorry, I'm rambling. Tend to do that when I'm feeling like a zombie. :P

Hot hot hot. I was in the car on the way home from work with my stepdad and we were watching the thermometer go from 95 to 96... all the way up to 101. Yuck! The room we were working in today had something like A/C -- but it really was about 80 in the room. The weatherfolk say that the heat's supposed to break Wednesday -- just in time for orientation at my college yay! -- but I don't know if I trust that.

/me shuffles in and plunks down in the closest seat to the door just to get off her feet and orders some hot honey lemon tea
The good news: The guy who came out to fix the A/C yesterday actually found the problem! He worked his butt off taking everything apart and finally discovered that the replacement blower motor put in last year was the wrong voltage, only getting half the energy it was supposed to. He put in a new motor with the correct voltage, and even fixed the drain pipe for all the condensation that's been running all over my garage (and under my boiler, rotting the wood it's sitting on - I'm afraid it will fall through one of these days... :P)
The bad news: After he was gone, I noticed that my wedding band is gone. *sigh* Mind you, I can't promise you it was there *before* he used the bathroom - I tend to take them off for a shower and then forget to put them back on. I have a small gold cat with a long tail that sticks straight up to put your rings on. All of mine are still there including my engagement ring, but not the wedding band. I hated like heck to point fingers, especially since he did such a great job on the A/C unit, but I had to call and report it to the landlord this morning just in case. Maybe there have been other reports of things missing after this guy has been out, maybe not. If not, I can apologize for the inconvenience and ground my sons until one of them confesses. I don't really think they have it, though. They've been grounded from the computer until the ring is returned... they think I'm blaming them anyway... so one of them surely would have brought it back.
/me sips at her honey lemon tea some more
And I have a nasty head cold/sinusitis/turning-in-to-bronchitis thing going on. *cough* *hack* *SNEEZE!* *sniffle*

It was a lot cooler out today. I'm excited for this weekend, going down to Boston and visiting some museums. Mainly the Museum of Fine Arts and The Museum of Science but maybe a couple others. Looks like I won't be able to get to visit the Met though one of my friends I met this summer invited me to come with her and few friends to the Met during the fall sometime. :boing:

As for the ring, still no show. I took apart the drain under the sink in the front bathroom (eeeewwwwww!!) but it wasn't in there. It can't get into the other bathroom sink (I checked the openings with my engagement ring) and there's no way it's getting down the shower drain past the metal cover with the tiny holes in it. If it went down a toilet I'm SOL, same with the boys' tub.
So I'm down to hoping that whomever took it will give it back. Or, hey, my anniversary is coming up at the beginning of September - maybe DH will be inclined to replace it... hmmm... :hahugh:

Finally entering the home stretch... entering week 6 of summer work this week, between 5 and 4 weeks to go. One never expects that teachers have it bad, but we do! It's alot harder teaching than I ever expected! Luckily I'm almost done. I went up with my stepdad to do some more work today, and one of his colleagues kept trying to talk me into a music major. Again. I want to do psychology, why is that so hard to understand?
It's heating up again here. I hope the power doesn't go out again anywhere!
Hope the rest of you are doing well... It's been quiet in here lately.

For candles ... one idea would be to get an LED candle. :) These are battery operated and are usually the size of a tea light candle. You can find them on eBay, and a Google search will turn up more shops that carry them. You may even be able to find a gift shop that carries them; some of the stores around me now have them in stock.
I'm not sure what a good alternative for incense would be ... perhaps a small bottle of essential oil that could sit in the shrine?

I've written a song for Wepwawet-Yinepu. I'm an amateur composer who uses Finale to sequence MP3's -- and I have no idea how to put an MP3 up for people to hear. However, if anyone would like to hear the song -- it's for strings, with percussion and piano, just reply with your email and I'll send you a copy. It's full title is "Hymn to He Who is on His Mountain, Who Guideth the Dead in the Hall of Two Truths" -- Long winded and I'm sure fairly inaccurate, but He seems to like the song. Thought y'all would be interested!
That's up on the KO boards as well but I know there's a few who aren't KO here... thought you would like it as well.

I'd like to hear it - I'll pm you.
Just stuck doing the job search thing and trying to do a million other things at once. Also just finished a painting I've been working on all summer, planning Wep Ronpet and... and... and...
Not feeling very... personable lately - it's the job searching. I'm overqualified for everything available here because of my degree, and there isn't anything in my field locally (and if there was... I need a Master's to get a good job in my field...) *grumbles*
Argh... anyway, see what I mean?
For the New Year, I'm planning on getting some flowers - I'm hoping oranges yellows and reds will dominate the scheme, and trying to go buy an obelisk if I can. We'll just have to wait and see.
I'll post a link in the arts and crafts forum when I get pics of the new painting up in a few minutes. :boing:

I'd get flowers for Wep Ronpet, but my cockatiels would turn any bouquet into a salad bar, given the chance. :deviltail Some flowers are toxic to 'tiels, so it's best to keep them away.
If I'm able to, I'm going to visit the Royal Ontario Musuem (http://www.rom.on.ca) on the Friday before Wep Ronpet (free admission after 4 PM). I've been there once before, and they have a great Egypt exhibit - and I've been dying to see it again! :)
For Wep Ronpet itself ... I have some things that I've been meaning to offer to Djehuty - so I'm going to do Senut that day and offer them.

Yeah, surprisingly downtown Durham does not have air fresheners which would come in handy considering it is a college town and some dorm rooms smell horrendous. I ended up using my white cherry blossom perfume. A bit of both, Ishtara. Not walking away from Bast or Amun or HetHert, much less the others, but being pulled off by other Gods for a while. Bast has made it clear that She isn't bothered by it. Amun's ambivalent, but willing to wait for me. thankfully.
It's all bound up in oaths I made when I was much younger. But I think its a good thing. :)
So I guess you could say one foot is on the gentle curve and the other is on the sharp turn and I'm trying to maintain my balance. But that's not too new. ;)

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that I'm still alive. Getting over my depression, and have started school for the fall. And I'm busy as hell.
A couple of weeks ago, I got an idea, and it was impressed upon me that I really do need to do it.... I'm getting tattoos!!! An ankh at the cleft of the breasts, the Glyphs for Bast on my back at the base of the neck, Serqet on the left shoulderblade, and Yenipu on the right. gods... this is sooo gonna hurt. From what I can tell, the sternum is the most painful place to get a tat. The others aren't as bad, but still... i'm such a pansy. But... Right now I'm regretting agreeing to work extra today - I feel like crap! and there's no one to cover for me. oh well.
how's everyone been?

Seems unusually quiet in here... where's everyone?
Just wanted to say hello... some health problems and a crazy workload kept me away from MW for the past few months, but hopefully I will be back for good soon.
Tomorrow's my birthday, so to celebrate it'll be open bar all day at the Blue Lotus! Have a drink on me! :blowcandl
*Looks at post above*
And I see that someone got her new name! Congrats TaysatWesir!
(Now to get used to calling you by your new name... :) )

Yay! Here you are! *Hugs Romani Vixen and Zephyrstorm*
How are you two doing? Last time I was around I remember that you both were really busy... I hope things have slowed down a little and that life is treating you well :)
Here things are OK, my health is improving and it looks like we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel at work... I have been working way too much over the past six months and I cannot wait for it to stop!:fpcsucks

Right now I have a bit of the flu, but I'm getting better. I'm working taking complaints for the local paper and trying to find time to paint and draw. :)
I'm so glad you are doing better, Ishtara :hugz: You've been missed!

I'm doing really well. :) I met a couple of KO friends at the Royal Ontario Museum last weekend; that was a lot of fun. We saw the exhibits on Egypt, Peru, China, Japan, and Korea (the last three are all in the same large area).

*adds FUL MEDAMES to the menu*
We also have a selection of figs, dates, pomegranates and grapes, along with a nice assortment of breads.
And try some date candy (http://members.cox.net/ahmedheissa/recancnt.htm)
