Wow, I just noticed we have our own forum. That's NEAT!

The Blue Lotus seemed like a good name for this thread. Back on the House of Netjer's online temple site, I actually created this thread on the private side, but no one there really seemed to grasp what I was doing. Here on MW, we have various cafés, bars, grilles, taverns, palaces, meadows and assorted other conglomerations of likeminded people coming together in a single thread in much the same way that they would if it had been a real-life place. (Well, okay, sometimes the fantasy aspect gets a little out of hand, but anyway....)

So.... I'd like to keep this thread right here in this forum, rather than in Just Silly, and have it be a kind of fellowship thread. Or a slow motion chatroom. Or a real-life pub where people actually drop in every now and then and share a story or a joke or ask a question or just get a sympathetic ear. And if we happen to fantasize about feeding the giant blue hippo in the reflection pool in the courtyard, so be it. (His name's William, btw.... just like the little faience version.)

So with that in mind, I'm saying a big Em Hotep! to everyone here and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better in more of a social setting than an academic one. (I never get to let my hair down very much on the House's site. It's probably for the best. I'm insane, after all.)

And now I'm going to order some melokkia soup, catfish kufta, and a glass of beer (because our barkeep Kheruef used to be an ancient Egyptian ushabti, so he knows how to brew authentic Kemetic beer).

**tells a serving girl that she's going to take her meal out under a palm tree by the reflecting pool so she can visit William and feed him some hippo snacks**

**edited to add** If you're reading this post for the first time, don't feel obligated to read the entire thread (especially once it gets to be more than three pages long). Just like if you were entering a real tavern and coming upon new friends who are talking, all you really need to do is go to the end of the thread and read the last three or four posts in order to have a clue what's being talked about at that moment in time.

So please, feel welcome. Ask questions, wear a costume if you want to (or don't if you don't feel like it), pat our gray female cat Miu Sher, nod and smile to the serving girls, order anything you want from Kheruef the barkeep (he doesn't speak, though.... hazards of having been an ushabti, I guess), and relax in the air conditioning while watching your favorite movies, shows and documentaries on the big flatscreen TV on the wall, or else go out and sunbathe by the reflecting pool and say hello to William. (Yes, he really is blue.) He likes treats, too, so be sure to grab a few chunks of HippoSnax on your way to see him. (And he likes having his butt scratched for some reason. He's weird.)

**editing to add our new banner (in case people don't see where it's posted in the thread), courtesy of very talented and wonderful Shepenmut**

I'm doing well, Neheti. Thanks. How are you?

Yeah, that thread over there got moved very quickly to the literature section. And then when people stopped posting in it, it got removed altogether. **shrugs** Ah well.

I had no idea there was so much interest around here in Egyptian stuff. When I first came to MW, they had already removed the old Egyptian forum because there wasn't enough interest. And mol refused to add one until just recently because he still didn't see a need for one. I'm glad it's here now. It's much easier to find the stuff I'm interested in without having to forum-hop.

I still owe HetHert (the MW member) a list of all the Egyptian books I own. I've just been too lazy to find them at the moment. (I'm rearranging stuff in my room, so half of my books are in boxes in my brother's room while he's away.)

**orders a banana split from the serving girl passing by**

This seems like a good place to ask the question: Do you or any other Egyptian-type people have a holiday tree with Kemetic-themed stuff on it?

I do. :D I've decided to call it my WeSolstiMas tree. (Part Wesir Mysteries, part Winter Solstice, and part Christmas.) I'm trying to make ornaments for it out of super sculpey. So far, I have just one. It's a sun disk with a snake draped over it. (I got the design from looking at this painted papyrus I have on my wall.) Other than that, it looks like a regular Christmas tree, but with silver star garland and a silver, glittery star for the top, and the five birds associated with the Tree of Life. I'm thinking I'll add one handmade ornament each year. I know Kemetic Orthodox practitioners usually frown on it, but I like having a tree, and I like being strange, so this works for me. ;)

Zephyrstorm
November 30th, 2005, 10:18 PM
*shrugs* We're decorating, already have lights and whatnot. I'm doing it for Yule, since I still practice Wicca in addition to Kemetic Orthodoxy. So yeah, I've got a Wesir-Solstice thing coming along.

But we don't have room in our tiny apartment for a tree, so we're hanging a garland and our ornaments will be attached to it.

We have a tradition that we buy a Yule ornament every year.

I'm gonna steal the sculptey idea... realizes that she just gave away her left over sculptey... doh...

Well, just because you don't have more sculptey doesn't mean you can't make your own playdough or clay: Dough and Clay Recipes (http://www.make-stuff.com/kids/clay.html)

Piece of cake, er, clay. :)

Why thankee. :) I've done stuff like that before for Samhain. it's fun to make skulls and the like in dough.

Now to decide what kinds of ornaments to make... *goes to plotting*

Em hotep everyone!

*looks around The Blue Lotus*
Nice little place we have here! May I get a karkade? :)

So, yes, decorating and ornaments: I have two large lithographs representing scenes from the tomb of Nakht. They usually are in my bedroom, but tonight they are being moved to the living room and will take centre stage in my holiday decorations. No tree for me, but lots of evergreen garlands to adorn the altar table where I do senut.

I am a bit of a minimalist so I usually do not put many ornaments out, but Kemetic-themed ornaments sound like a brilliant idea to me! Time to get crafty ;)

**Evil laugh** I'm starting a trend, I see. Soon, the entire Winter Holiday World will be FILLED with images of blue baboons kissing under mistletoe and presents will be wrapped in spun gold and ornamented with scarabs and cobras instead of bows and ribbons. Muahaahahaha!!

Uh, yeah... sorry. I get carried away sometimes. But I promise that when I take over the world, I will give cookies and milk to everyone who has been good and rotten radishes (in lieu of coal, which is getting ever more expensive) to everyone who hasn't been good.

**orders lobster lo mein and an eggroll, and a bottle of Park Ave. Punch, then settles herself on some comfy pillows on the floor, only halfway paying attention to The Mummy Returns playing on the large flatscreen TV on the wall**

I love being Kemetic, but I still find it so hard to relate to the cycle of seasons. It's so out of sync with the four seasons I'm used to here in Massachusetts. **idly reaches out and pats a sleek gray cat with a silver, lapis, and turquoise collar** This is Miu Sher, the official spokesfeline of the Blue Lotus Tavern. If my cat at home had a female twin, Miu would be it.

I had my tree up for weeks it so pretty concerned about the electricity bill the lights haven’t been off since putting them on the tree.

Too bad there aren’t any Egyptian themed ornaments sold in regular stores like Kmart. Just imagining Aset as an angel topping the tree that would be super cool better than the one currently there.

Well, there are some ancient Egyptian themed ornaments, but they're very hard to come by, even online. I saw one place selling them as souvenirs from Egypt. And another place has the beautiful blown-glass ones that are more Arabic than Kemetic. They're still lovely, though.

Woot! Rock on! Senet!

I have a paper cut-out version that came as part of a big kid's Egypt Exploration book, but I've never taken it out of the package to learn how the game is played.

Mmm, basboosa.... I keep looking at that recipe in my recipe book (the binder I have of recipes I find online), and wondering if I shouldn't make that soon. It always sounds so good.

The weather where I am is just around 4 degrees C, but it's partly sunny and the sun will be setting in about an hour. We haven't had any substantial snow yet. Just dustings every now and then. But they disappear as soon as they hit the ground.

**orders chocolate cake with raspberry sauce**

I was out at a homegoods store today looking for a loose tea strainer and a mortar and pestle. There were no tea strainers, and the mortars they had there were too large for my needs. But I didn't leave emptyhanded. I ended up buying these cute glazed porcelain cats that have ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and art on them as well as lotus collars. Hey, here's one!

http://www.gocollect.com/images/CardewTeapots/200/FCD61402.jpg

Here's a bunch of others. (http://www.blackcatcollectables.com/acatalog/Cool_Catz_from_Cardew_Design.html)

Why are they so expensive? I only paid $12.99 each for mine.

Why, that's very interesting. I have two perpetuating images of Sebek, one at a metal concert, and another of Him as a croc lying on the banks of the Nile. He's said to be the land that first came from the Nun. So, the imagery you've had isn't so weird.

Go on, talk to the big guy. He's really very cuddly. Honestly. He won't bite, but may spear-tackle just for fun.

Hate to indulge but in the dream it was me, my niece and someone I don’t know but was the tour guide in Egypt. I came out of this café that happened to be right next to the Nile. My niece went in first (brave girl in drams and real life) I followed. She waist deep in water while I only had it up to my knees (scardy cat). Not wanting to get wet I got in this little reed boat then this huge croc came along. He was right in the middle not moving at all kind of blocking my passage as if he wanted something. To say the least I was scared and thought isn’t that Sebek maybe he won’t bite. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_9_1.gif

But, yeah, talk to Him. He won't bite. If He's trying to get your attention, He won't bite. I find He likes green things, red meat and chicken, and Midori (yay for green liqueurs), in case you want to offer Him something.

*eats more chicken*

So I just registered on that European message board dedicated to Ancient Egypt, y'see, 'cause they had lots of interesting threads and it looked fun an' stuff, ya know?

*Downs half of her drink*

So I poke around for a while until I find a thread titled "Does the ancient religion of Egypt still exist?" an' I tell myself "Cool, let's see if there are other Kemetics around!"

*Finishes her drink and immediately orders another one*

Well, I must have forgotten that not every forum is like MW *hiccup*...

*Starts sounding very drunk*

There was that one girl there who explained she was Kemetic, y'see, and all she got was sh*t an' abuse and most of the poshts were like "you must be kidding, right?", and one of them Ammit-fodder amnidishtrators... adimnish... moderator guys ended up closing the thread 'cause he said that Kemeticism was a shect an' no real religion an' not worth talking about.

*wanders over to console Ishtara, buys her another drink*

Some people are just not worth bothering with. *orders some rum*

Redshire, I'm sure He probably would like them, but I'm not sure I would. I'm not a metal fan, but He seems to like it. *shrug* What do you do when a God wants you to get into metal, and you're so not a metal girl? >< It's funny, though, cos my brother's girlfriend, who I'm good friends with, seems to get this one Rammstein song in her head when we talk about Him. She's the Rammstein fan, not me. So, yeah. He keeps grinning at her. I've got this 130cm long plush crocodile on my bed and we cuddle Him when we're up late talking sometimes. He winks at her, apparently. So, yeah. Rammstein. I don't know why. Ah well. he can keep trying. Maybe He'll convince me one day.

And yes, I am close to Djehuty. He follows me to class. I think He likes ska and reggae, personally. Jamaican music seems to be what pops into my head when I think about Him. He seems keen on drumming as well. *shrugs* He looks so disappointed when I have to tell Him He can't experiment during my lab classes.

*drinks rum*

I'm going to see Harry Potter today. It's kinda cool and cloudy here. The sun pops His head out every now and then. And I really should get dressed soon. Yep.

Hey Argento, thanks for the drink last night! What are you having? :achug:

I was wondering how many of us will be able to be completely open with their beliefs this holiday season, either because you live by yourself of because your family/SO knows and accepts your spirituality.

My mother will be staying with me for three weeks and while I told her I was Kemetic, she never saw me practice. I do not know how she will react. She is a complete atheist, so I think she has a hard time comprehending the very idea of reconstructionism. Oh well... we will see. I will try and make things as festive and non-threatening as possible (hence my enthusiasm at Nefer Sesemet's ornament idea :)), but if she does not like it, well, too bad.

So, how is everyone doing with their preparations for Wesirmas? :D
I am trying my best to keep things low-key and simple this year. I would gladly have forgone any gift-giving but my mom had to be her usual self and started talking about presents in September! Mind you, we only see each other once a year (she lives in France), so I can understand that she wants to make the occasion ultra-special. So I have a few handmade presents for her and I will take her to a very nice restaurant on the 24th.
My friends will mostly receive edible stuff: I already got some premium white tea for one of them and this weekend I will get a BIG bag of Scandinavian salted licorice for a Finnish friend who is suffering from withdrawal :)

As for me, I told everyone that I did not want anything. I am trying to buy a place and the last thing I need is yet more trinkets to pack for the move!

My WesirMooYulemas preparations are going pretty well. I'm gonna be in charge of a Wiccan Yule celebration most likely - trying to find a place that we can have it (my house is too small). And the house is decorated and whatnot. :)
Still buying presents - some of my family is incredibly hard to shop for...and my sister has been really ill, so I want to get her something that will be special.

You know what, I think I am getting carried away with that Kemetic ornament idea... this morning I suddenly got a very detailed mental image of a Djed pillar (one of the anthropomorphic ones, with eyes and arms) wearing tinsel garlands and a completely outrageous party hat :fprtyman3

OMG the Djed pillar YULE! Thats a brilliant sight. I'm seeing the pillar with red and green and gold balls hanging from it, the white-icthyphalic crown made to look like the santa hat, the arms holding ankh ornatmets with tinsel strung throught the holes...its all right there in the vision. I wonder how hard it would be to make one for next year...

*tries to draw Mut's name for Shepenmut, but first has to convince Miu Sher to give her pen back and William not to eat her notebook*

There probably were variations in Mut's name spelling, especially during the late period, but the one I know is from the Middle Kingdom:
- the vulture, which reads "mwt"
- the "t" loaf of bread, to echo the t in mwt and also to show it is a female's name
- a sign looking a little like an egg... no one knows for sure what it is, but it is found in other deities' names, Aset for instance
- the seated woman, which is a determinative showing that we are reading the name of a Goddess, not a God

I do I do! *waving hand enthusiastically*. I study them, read, write, and try to figure out the esotericness in them <-- that part is the funnest (is funnest even a word *Shrug*). LOL

Ishtara
December 13th, 2005, 06:39 PM
Yay! Another scribe-in-training!

Most of my books were bought in France, where I come from.

My very first one was a really basic book by French archeologist and novelist Christian Jacq. It was called "Le Petit Champollion Illustre".

When I turned 18, my parents gave me a wonderful edition of Champollion's grammar, "Principes generaux de l'ecriture sacree egyptienne". It is a beautiful book, especially the watercolour inserts reproducing Champollion's own handwritten hieroglyphs and notes. Unfortunately, the text itself is so obsolete (grammatical terms written in Ancient Greek, anyone?) that the book is all but useless on a practical level.

I am currently studying the last chapter of "How to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs" by Mark Collier and Bill Manley, that Khuinaset recommended to me a while ago. Some of the grammatical explanations are a little vague, but other than that I like this book a lot and find it easy to learn with.

If you have any books that you could recommend for further studying, I would be grateful for any suggestion. I should be done with the Collier and Manley soon and I am eager to tackle more advanced stuff :)

Oh, and I am very interested in the more esoteric aspects of the hieroglyphs myself.

Have you read any of the books written by Symbolists such as Schwaller de Lubicz? Given that they believed very strongly that both the language and the architecture of Ancient Egypt were sacred, I bet they would have interesting comments on that.

I am currently reading a book about the Jewish Kabbalah and quite a few of the insights about the mystic qualities of the language could easily be applied to hieroglyphics as well. I wonder if gematria would work with hieroglyphs...

I would love to have a tattoo of Mut’s name on my ankle. Interesting story, in the waiting of my doctor’s office this man started talking about his tattoos. Before it was legal he got them done in the east village around the late 60’s or early 70’s. He also talks about how he spent 25 years tattooing his entire body and is in some book.

Yes I have read some Schwaller de Lubitz as well as his daughters stuff. I really enjoy their insights. The Egyptian Initiate is a really good book that I go too to help with the framework of the Egyptian esotericism.

I wholeheartedly agree about the Jewish Mysticism of the letters and its application to the heiroglyphs...I, myself, was wondering that very same concept about applying a numeric value to the heiroglyphs as well but I don't think I have found a solid link...either in book or meditation. Simply because they had a measuring set of heiroglyphs...but in the same I breath I believe in the multiple meanings of the heiroglyphs as well.

Yup Her-Bak is a series of books, layed out from the persepective of a child initiate. All I can say is its really great if your trying to get a perspective on the way deLubitz believes that the priest class worked with training an initiate. The entire insight is amazing. If you can I highly recommend investing in them!

Em Hotep everyone... Wow, I just found this place. Its Wonderful!!!

Ishtara.. the egg is a determinative meaning goddesses (plural/female/divine).. it is also found as a determinative that represents a group of cities. Esoterically, it means "the house of" or "het" or all the goddesses associated with a particular god, given one name.

I too, love the medu neter and have made a study of the esoteric meanings (what I call the 4th level) of hieroglyphic writing. I just finished teaching a 10 part class (one that will be repeated early next year) on the Kaballa and its Kemetic origins.

I know nothing of medu neter and I haven't any desire to learn, so I didn't comment on it. That doesn't stop other people who are interested in it from picking up on it and commenting on it.

No one was trying to be mean to you. Have patience with this place. It's not the kind of thread that is as fast-paced as a chatroom. I treat anyone who replies here exactly the same. I don't really know any of you, not even people in the House of Netjer, but I'm trying to be nice to you all and talk to you like I've known you for ages. It just didn't occur to me to extend a personal welcome to anyone. (And if you knew me in person, you'd totally understand. I'm completely lacking in the good social skills department. I'm pretty much a wallflower in person.)

Please do feel welcome here. Everyone should feel that way. This is just as much your place to hang out as it is mine. You should order things to eat and drink, make small talk about your life and your interests and current events and help build on the visuals of this thread. I gave it a start by introducing the bartender, the hippo and the cat, but you and everyone else are free to add whoever and whatever else you want, also, in order to make it seem more like an Egyptian-inspired fantasy lounge. Heck, you can have your own personal chariot or a your own baboon servants, if you want. :)

I used the "tch" {glyph=a flame} sound in the word Utchet because Utcha (protective fire) represents activity whereas the dj {glyph=hand} sounds represents strength or stability (djedj). Plus, if you spell the word with a "dj" it changes the meaning to "ejaculate or spew forth". To me the flaming eye and the waxing and waning reflected eye are more everchanging than stable. Personally, I don't believe there was that much difference in the sounds of the two letters. When spoken, one or the other could have had an unknown inflection, so its all conjecture as to how it was properly pronounced. I do know there is a difference in meaning when spelled differently.

Thank you very much for the information about the egg-like sign! Would you happen to know what the sign itself represents? I read many differing opinions, from an egg to a goatskin/waterskin to a boil...

*Cranks up Natacha Atlas on the stereo and starts dancing on the table*

Oh, thats an egg alright. It is a determinative that represents an enclosure (plural female) most likely derived from the word h-t, house, courtyard, enclosure (as in HetHert, House of Horus). While Heru was male, no known male hawk would be laying an egg. If one considers a bird, you really can't seperate the female bird from the egg. Female comes out of an egg and a egg comes out of a female. Its one way with the male gender of that species... but I ramble.

I also raise my glass of Red Beer in salute to my Lady!!! Ur-t ur Neter-t!! (Greatest are you among the goddessess in heaven)

Ptah walks in with papyrus in hand, unties it and hangs it carefully on the wall. On it are written ancient words of the Medu Neter...

Beautiful Sekhmet in Gold and Red dress
On shore of Hap, while gathering blue lotus
The sea dragon Messeh bared its sharp teeth
and grabbed her foot, so in fear she screamed

Ptah in his workshop working did hear.
Rushed to her aid and when he saw her there
He pierced Messeh's heart with his divine bolt
He killed the dragon, he destroyed its soul.

He held her and kept her safe under the eye of the day
So with love in her heart with him did she lay
and crowned with his love, she opened the door
and for him, a beautiful strong son she bore.

This divine child of heavens design
Grew strong and built a temple fine.
He named this sacred home Het-Ka-Ptah
where the soul of his father watches over them all.

*claps for Ptah's lovely poem* What a beautiful show of gratitude for the Lord and Lady!

*shares a beer with you* *and then shares some more beer with you* :drinking:

I do hope that the gods and goddesses were kind to everyone this year and that the benefits of everyones work has been amply rewarded. I personally have a lot of gratitude to my HetHert and Heru, Ra, Ptah and Sekhmet, Osiris and Isis, Tehuti and Ma'at, Sesheta, Amun, Bast, Mut, Anubis, NebtHet, and yes even the mighty Set... and many more that have helped me through this year and taught me the power of living and loving in light and darkness, from within to without and without to within.

I'd like to add that I really like having been introduced to MW...to Ptah I say WOOT and thank you, you have my gratitude yet again my friend.

To everyone in the Blue Lotus...I'm grateful for having been given the opportunity to meet and get to know other Egypt/Kemet lovers and livers (hahaha livers, makes me want to add favar beans and cianti). I look forward to getting to know you all better and hopefully in the days that come we can celebrate many more holidays, festivals, and feasts together!

Yep, definitely giving thanks to the Gods. Sorry I haven't been around here much, been busy and that. And I still have to find my dad a christmas present. >< Ah, tomorrow! Must get to bed, too, tis nearly 3 am, and I'm dead tired.

Before I go, I give a huge huge nekhtet! to Djehuty that I actually passed Systems Physiology this semester when I was quite sure I'd fail it! Nekhtet! I got a credit! Yay! *drinks toast to Djehuty*

Oh, and a toast to Sebek for being a loveable, well, being His loveable Self. For being a comfort when I haven't felt the greatest. Nekhtet! *drinks toast to Sebek*

And a toast to Aset because She didn't want to feel left out. She's been wonderful this year too, shown me things about Her and the world. She has indeed touched everything, as She told me one afternoon. Nekhtet! *drinks toast to Aset*

And if I keep on toasting people/Gods, I'll be here longer than the speeches at the reception earlier on. ><

Goodnight all! Yes, I'm tired, hence this post may seem strange. Ignore that.

*Admires the poem that Ptah posted, then raises a glass of fine red wine to the Names Who looked after her in 2005*

Thank you Ma'at, Daughter of Ra, Feather of Truth, for showing me the way and giving my life balance. I hope I did an acceptable job upholding you this year, I am working hard at getting better at it!

Thank you Djehuty, Bull of Ma'at, Thrice Greatest, for granting me persistence and skill in my studies. In particular, thank you for insisting on my trying to learn hieroglyphics again, showing me that I could draw after all and thus unblocking my creativity.

Thank you Inpu, Foremost of the Westerners, Lord of the Sacred Land, for taking care of my dearly departed. I lost several people close to my heart this year and I know that you guided them safely to the West.

Thank you Nebt-Het, Mistress of the House, Friend of the Dead, for comforting me and my friends' families during some very hard times this year. For this we are truly grateful.

Dua Ma'at, dua Djehuty, dua Inpu, dua Nebt-Het! Dua Netjer! Nekhtet!

So how was everyone's Yule? And what are the things you will be doing for the Gregorian New Years? Any resolutions or plans underway for the year ahead?

Me personally, its back to the lessons and learning. My husband and I are still working on our temple/library. I've been a bit lax as of late, more dealing with mundane and getting this holiday season out of the way. But this next year will be a big one hopefully for changes in his career and mine for regaining health and strength.

My Yule was rather low-key and my Christmas non existent. Good thing that my mother, who is staying with me at the moment, was very tired that day and did not feel like doing anything either.

I am invited to a New Year's party at a friend's house, but I will probably stay for a couple of hours only as I do not want to leave my mom by herself that night.

My main resolution for 2006 is to allow myself to reclaim and use my creativity.
I always thought that I was terrible at anything artistic, yet in 2005 Netjer showed me that I could draw very nice hieroglyphs. I think it is because I thought of them as writing, not drawing, that I overcame my block and started drawing freely.
I want to experience that freedom again and try a bit of everything to see what medias work best for me.

I also promised myself to get my romantic life back on track. Enough relationships with brillant yet insecure men who are afraid of commitment. Enough, I say!!!
A very nice guy I recently met just asked me out and this time I will not jeopardize this budding romance in favour of a more exhilarating but doomed from the start three-month affair.

A little about myself: I'm 32 and am a new member of the House of Netjer. I became Remetj in October and was divined and named in December. I was divined a daughter of Djehuty and a beloved of Hethert-Sekhmet. My Shemsu name is Djehutyzebetj, which means "Djehuty's mirth". A shortform of that is Zebi.

Prior to the House, I was a solitary Neo-Wiccan for about 10 years, and before that, I was raised Roman Catholic. I am involved in the local Pagan community. I was on the committee for the 2nd Durham Pagan Pride Day (http://dppd.durhampagans.ca), and I'm planning to help out with the 3rd.

Looks like fun. We got our own vegies growing here. Well, more herbs and cherry tomatoes. We have bad soil though. Needs conditioning. It's so bad we've never had any of the mint we've tried to grow over the years take over the garden like it does everywhere else. >< Tis what you get for having a coastal strip of sandy soils on limestone. *sighs* We stick to what grows.

As well you should. Many a frustrated gardener hasn't learned that lesson, yet. Somtimes amending the soil isn't the answer you may need to build raised beds and supply the soil. Lime tends to dissolve organic material and that includes roots. Calcium carbonate (lime) is highly alkaline, it dissolves the lignin that binds organic fibers together (turns roots to mush). If you do build raised beds look at incorporating french drains in the design, so the limestome won't leach up into the bed because of standing water.

So what does grow there naturally?

Oh, good. I wasn't sure how the class would be run, so I was just checking.

So what does grow there naturally?

Wat does grow? Our bush basil refuses to die. it's the only herb we have left of the original lot that didn't die. It's quite happy there. Tis next to our lemon tree. Our roses have always suffered a bit, but apparently they're even happier if they have Alyssia (?) or something like that growing next to it. Apparently, it attracts bugs that eat the aphids, or something to that effect. We grow rocket quite well, which is good as our canaries love it. We grow nastursiums (?) well also. They take over the garden. We've had a spinach growing quite well. We have Rosemary growing, apple mint (in a pot) and probaly a few more I'm forgetting. We have two comquat trees in pots as well. Citrus seems not to mind it here so much. We have a lime tree, and I *think* a mandarin as well. I think mum's growing some beans and either zucchini, cucumber or something else. I can't remember which one. Sherry tomatoes I mentioned. We got a good crop from those this year. Er, last year. Er, you get the idea. So, yeah, things do grow, just not everything.

We've always had mint die if planted in the garden. Coriander, lemon grass, thyme, another type of basil, chives though they survive for a while, and probably several more I'm forgetting.

The area at the back where the vegies and herbs are is raised anyway. we have the house, then the patio area, then the lan is raised about half a metre to make a raised garden with I think limestone retaining walls, or a stone like that at any rate. There's mostly grass there, which mum's looking to rip up and replace with garden. And out our washing line elsewhere. She's rather attached to growing her own vegies. Earth mother from way back. The front garden is a lovely cottage garden type thing, with lavendar and roses and daisies and all sorts of other things. She prefers the everything mixed in together look, rather than a garden in any sort of pattern.

I think I've rambled enough, aye? That wasn't supposed to be that long. >< Ah well. Excuse my tired brain and such things.

Hey Zephyrstorm, will you show us the bellydance moves you learn with your group? What style will you be learning?
We should have bellydance nights here at the Blue Lotus and hopefully we could convince Instinct and Shepenmut to join us!

I am glad to see that Ptah's herbalism class is getting lots of interest. I

We're hoping to go into American Tribal. ;) But I have a dance I'm wanting to learn that involves long hair and the manipulation of a special kind of gown. I don't know the name of it right now, but that's okay - right now my hair is at the nape of my neck 8O - I have time to learn more.

I used to belly dance as a teenager, but I was some 100 lbs. lighter back then. heh. All the more reason for me to get back into it.

::taijiya hears the word "bellydance" and comes running in::

Ooh, another tribal bellydancer! I've done ATS with a troupe for a couple of years now and really like it. And I think the other style you're thinking of is Saidi, with the thobe dress and the hair-flipping. I've never actually done it, but I've seen it done, and it looks like fun. I'd like to do Zar, which is actually a ritual dance; there's a bit of it incorporated in a choreography I'm learning, and I like it a lot.

::gets out the coin belts and the tassels:: I could ramble on about dance all day long...

:)

Thanks Taijiya!
That's the one. I figure my dancing will make a great offering to my Mother and Beloved. ;)
As well as a hundred other benefits: beautiful clothes, better health, woot!

Of course though, despite having danced when I was younger, I'm basically back at a basic level when it comes to my classes.

I did not know we had so many bellydancers here! :)

I never tried ATS... mind you, I never took proper classes, so I very much doubt that my dancing belongs to any particular style!
I just learned the moves in Beirut with my Lebanese friends, so I guess that we were dancing basic Raqs Sharqi. I sometimes bellydance by myself at home when I am in a good mood. I actually did that only yesterday, much to the despair of my cat who visibly thought I had lost my marbles ;)

How many of us bellydancers incorporate dancing into their rituals? Like I said, I sometimes dance for joy or just to relax and I make sure to give these moments to Netjer as offerings. But other than that, I do not dance for the Names I serve on a regular or more structured basis.

Instinct, a lassi is an Indian yoghurt-based drink. It can be served plain and salty, or sweet and fruit- or spice-flavoured. My favourite has rose water and cardamom. Yum!
I never tried the cinnamon version that Ahautenites mentioned, but it sounds delicious!

I sometimes dance, or drum, or play music for my Mother and my beloved...but when you consider who They are, it's almost inevitable!

Zephyrstorm
January 12th, 2006, 11:57 AM
I've tried drumming for them, but I'm so terrible at it right now - I always get the impression that they're giggling at me while I'm doing it. heh.
I sing a lot for Them during my day, anything from contemporary music that I feel speaks of Them to old English Ballads.

I did a spontaneous little dance for Them the other day on my way to the shower, and I got the impression that They liked it. Usually breaking into spontaneous dance in my living room means accidentally kicking the puppy or getting jumped on by the puppy. So I don't always dance when I'm in the mood to.

Instead I break into song. My husband always laughs at my choices of music: he's still getting used to random recitations of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from me, not to even mention the occasional non-sensical ballad.

Of course, being your typical Bast-Mutant, I'm bad about not doing my Senut (Though I'm working on it!) So these are usually spontaneous offerings.

The smell of freshly baked apples with cinnamon and nutmeg wafts aromatically around as I call everyone to join me in a peice of crisp!

I was in a Betty Crocker mood so I made some crisp and I hate to not share it so here's some virtual goddessy kitchen witchery!

*HUGS* everyone and ponders what would be good entertainment right about now...anyone got any idears?

yeah those brats are mine... we are boarding another one too... and three of them get a hoof trim tomorrow morning.. which should be interesting since the two Arabs that I bought earlier this month haven't had a hoof trim in months!

I need to take some more pics.. especially of our mini.. he is still all fuzzy and looks more like a stuffed toy than a horse!
