My 13-year old niece has just been committed to the hospital and we would like to by her a book on drawing to keep her busy (she is allowed to have pencils). Can anyone suggest one that might be good? She particularly likes fashion and clothes so maybe a beginner fashion-drawing book?

I can't suggest one, sorry :( You could search on Amazon though.

What about half a dozen magazines like Cosmo or Glamour, plus a nice sketchbook and some nice coloured pencils? :)

I found quite a few books on Amazon, but none that looked really right for a teen- they all seemed like college-level things or for little kids.
I'm hoping to stay away from the magazines for her... They have too many other messages that go along with the pictures. :(
But maybe I'll get her an anime-drawing book instead. That's popular with the kids these days, right? *asks the out-of-touch auntie*

Yes anime is very popular...Maybe she'll like that :)..Try a girly kind of anime..unless she likes the fighting and stuff..Like Fruits Basket or Sailor Moon(If they even sell that still..)..Try amazon or google :) Hope I helped.

Thats a good idea :)

The Winks are very popular here in the UK, if you dont mind that their arch-nemesis is an evil witch ;)

Dover Publishing has lots of good art instruction books as well as puzzle books. My son likes mazes but it is hard to find books with just maze puzzles in them, Dover has all kinds. Just google them - their prices are pretty good.
Hope she is feeling better soon.

I am sorry she needs to be hospitalized! Hope she is okay.

This book is on drawing Faeries, but not your typical ones.....I found it at the booskstore for my daughter for christmas and its just a gorgeous book. Faeries by Brian Froud. Look it up at Amazon!

Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain:
it is not "teen" specific, but both my girls have/and still use it, as well as myself. It really looks at the how-to's of drawing, seeing, perspective, contours etc...as well as the pyshcology of it, right brain stuff etc, but is really good for learning and has fun exercises as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! It turns out they won't let her have pencils, so I guess it'll have to wait. I'll keep them in mind for her birthday or something, though!

is she allowed markers or even crayons, they are softer byt can still be used to drawing, crayons are really great, I even use them with some of my mixed media paintings.

What about a book on drawing Faeries? I recienty bought a few for myself, if you would like the titles just PM me.
I like them because of all the great ways you can do the fashions for them!

Might be a little too girly for her. She's into the whole hip-hop, tough girl type thing.
