Okay. Move this to Pagan Geek if you want, but....on the other hand, I am not sure that certain people will see this in "Geek", so I decided to put it here. This is my understanding of what *SPAM* is, and why it is hated.

1) Chain Letters- Usually sappy, annoying, and a waste of time to read. Secondly, as you send them out, you use up bandwith, and lastly, people can get the names in your address book, to send you MORE spam. Chain letters usually end in "Send this to ** # of people on your email list.." etc.

2)Advertisements-umm..don't we get enough of them in pop up banners all over the net?

3)Hoaxes- For these, you might have to do a little research, as some of them can sound quite convincing. Check out www.snopes.com, for more information on Internet hoaxes. Also, refer to it regularly, to avoid sending out a hoax of any sort. These include dire warnings of computer, or real life virus', reports of new methods of abducting people, wild predictions, false claims about people, etc. Check snopes whenever you get a mass foward, warning you about anything, or anybody, in general. That is your best bet.

These are the examples of Spam that I can think of. If anyone has anything to add...please do.

If this is now abundantly clear, maybe some people will think twice about spamming the board, knowing how obnoxious and irritating it is to most of us.

Wrong, touched one, there is only ONE original spam; which, unlike McDonalds, contains real meat. Just ask Rick!
this electronic gobbledy gook merely appropriated the honorable name of something detested by veterans the world over.
Kinda like what the xian church did to our Sabbats.........

actually, the computer geeks that coined the word spam into use for junk e-mail (and not just canned meat...at least I think its meat...) were big Monty Python fans... (Spam spam spam spam...) BUT I DON't LIKE SPAM! ;)

OUT OF BACON??????
eeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
well folks, let's just move the spam to Rick's cool hat thread and deal with the real thing: Junk mail - almost as annoying as those damned sales calls that come when you're right at the crux of an important assignment, you answer and no one is there for about 10 seconds, then when the moron finally comes on line (with the obligatory boiler room sounds), he/she/it can't even pronounce your name correctly.........

Yes, somehow one of my clients started receiving that crap. I check his mail for him as he is kompewter illiterate. He must get 15 or 20 of those damned ads every day. I put them on the block list and they come through under another addy., You'd think they'd get the hint that it's a waste of their time after a while, wouldn't you?

"as annoying as those damned sales calls that come when you're right at the crux of an important assignment, you answer and no one is there for about 10 seconds"

in this house those calls don't even get 10 seconds, they're computer dialed and if i pick up the phone and hear silence i hang up immediately. too i've got a caller i.d., i've noticed that most of those calls show as "out of area". those get answered with a loud klingon style "WHAT!" which throws them off balance so that i control the call from that point on. these people care not a thin damm for your convenience when they make these calls, they are timed to catch you at home so they are owed scant courtesty. as for online spam/porn i've gone to scanning my e-mail list and deleting it unread first then opening and reading the real mail.

I don't wait the full ten seconds either, usually hang up if I hear no one on the line.
However, when I feel like having a little fun, I wait and then tell the caller that I am busy at the moment but if he/she would leave their home phone number, I'll return their call at my convenience. It's amazing how fast they hang up.
That, or I start shouting "HELLO, HELLO" into the phone until they hang up........

of course you can always go to sounding very official and annoyed, "this is a secure number, who are you, how did you get this number, etc. and accept no explanations then turn away from the phone and say "sergeant! trace this line immediately and get security on it !" then disconnect.

done a variation on that a time or two, based on real situations in my murky past.......
Amazing how fast they can forget a number.....

:D My bro & I make a game out of telemarketers and the like - by trying to keep them on the line as long as possible....while being as annoying as possible... (he's winning).. But yeah, those guys get pretty annoyed with you when you act all annoying, and usually end up hanging up on you rather than the other way around! :D
