I just saw it and I have to say that it is probably the best movie I've seen in a long time. It really is amazing... And they cut out most of the boring parts in the book. I can't wait for the next two to come out!

I saw it this afternoon and I honestly have never been so impressed by a movie--and I am very picky about film! I can't believe that we have to wait a whole year for the next one. I am going to see this one as many times as I can in the theater. WOW! It was really good!!!

I probably have to wait a few more weeks to get it here.. But is it worth it to see the movie then read the books, or read the books first, then see the movie?? :)

Personally, I would read the books first. The movie cuts out a ton of background information, and you miss a lot of character development. (all those long boring parts) Of course, it's done out of neccessity. If they included everything...there really is NO way to do a good movie and include it all.

But, seriously, this movie was excellent! I am most definately going to see it again, and this time, on the IMAX!
I loved it. There wasn't one person in the theater who wanted to leave when the film was over. I would have gladly stayed another three hours.
That's my opinion, anyway
I can't wait to see the next one!

the movie first. It would encourage you to really dig in on the
books. J.R. is hard to read, he has a weird writing style to me.

The movie was great!!! Here is the funny part... the people in
the theatre almost booed at the end... you know, because its
continued. I knew that before I went and figured everyone else
did too. Was very strange hearing all that noise at the end of
a movie and none of it happy cheers or polite conversation...
eerie.

That's crazy! When I saw it, the whole theater burst into applause and talking the minute it ended. And no one would leave either. Everyone was standing around discussing. The movie people had to clear us out for the next showing!

I had the same experience Hedwig did! Everyone broke into cheers and started clapping at the end of the movie. Some people were even giving it a standing ovation.
And the reactions to certain scenes during the films was amazing as well. The scene in Moria (right before the Troll), got the best reaction by far. Everyone in the theater was dead silent, waiting and listening, along with the characters on screen. You could hear the characters on screen breathing. It was great!

You must have been sitting with the wrong people, flar! ;)

People, in the theater where I saw it, stood up and began applauding, too. They even applauded when one of the more complicated fight scenes concluded. It was awesome. Not only did I love the movie, but I loved the entire theatre's atmosphere while the movie was playing. It was sort of a feeling of comradery. Maybe I'm just a freak like that, I don't know. ;)

And I didn't read the books and I still loved it. I did, however, pick up on the background information from my mom (who was in college when the book was hugely popular and is still a nut over it) and Radocs (who doesn't seem to like the books too much...;)).

I want to see it again!

Would it be better off to take a gander at the books first, or watch the movies first?

Well, from what's been said here, I'd say it doesn't seem to matter which you do first. You can enjoy the movie either way, you'll just experience it a bit differently, if you you've read the books, than you will if you haven't. Neither way is inherently better. I wanted to read the books before hand, and I was glad I did, but, not everyone's going to feel the same way.

So, it's up to you really.

You could try & read Fellowship right now. Espeically if you are not planning on seeing it right away. BUT, as I've stressed in other threads about the books, get the books with the illustrated covers, NOT, I REPEAT NOT, the movie covers. The movie covers will be the movie version, for the original J.R.R. version, get the others. They're excellent.

The movies is breathtaking. A most beautiful work of art. I'm awed & amazed and just plain LOVE THAT MOVIE. I can't wait to go back tomm.

The previews at my theater were great too. Spiderman & the new Austin Powers movie trailer. I laughed so hard during the AP trailer, as did everyone in the theater. then the movie was about to begin, and the people were shushing each other. Everyone cheered at the end. Must've had the wrong crowd in your theater Flar!

We even had folks dressed up at our showing last night.

Well it's really not a question any more.

It took me about 3 months last year to work through the Trilogy, the prequel and the backstory (the Silmarillion)... I also read a few of the Lost Tales but quickly lost interest. The books are not for the easily distracted, especially Silmarillion, which tells a wonderful story but is a very, very slow and taxing read.

i'd suggest reading the books first but then i've been reading and re-reading them off and on for 30 years. i'll agree with illuminatus, the sillmarillion is not an easy read but it does set the background for "lotr", you don't "have to" read it to enjoy lotr, either book or movie but it can help if you have the patience to read a book of almost biblical proportions.
