As far as swords vs wands and fire vs air, check the book that comes with your deck, because it varies. There's a thread about that in here, if you search for it. Usually you also have Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages, or Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses.

and then there's the Thoth deck, where the 'Knights' are the equivalent of 'Kings' in other decks.

well, most of the decks i've run across correspond the suits/elements thusly...air=swords fire=wands cups=water coins=earth....pr at least somewhat similar iconography. One variation of the RW i have uses pens,pistols,coffins and reels of film as suits. There is generally an element/astrological match up to suits which becomes pretty apparant after flipping through a few books...good luck and good reads*)
