View Full Version : Picturing the Goddess
Aventurine
March 24th, 2001, 11:46 PM
I don't recall exactly what thread prompted me to post this, but -
The image in my dreams of the God and Goddess is the same every time. I see her sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch of a ranch house, a beautiful woman in her mid-thirties; there's always something in her hands, but from time to time it changes, and I never recall exactly what it is. He's always out back, an older man in overalls. There's always a fresh pitcher of lemonade, and something in the oven.
A good friend of mine always teases me about the fact that the God is always outside, and I've never spoken to him in any of my dreams!

;) Your image is certainly unique!
I myself see the goddess and the god differently, and that's a good thing, Hee,hee :)
I follow an eclectic Celtic/Arthurian path, with a bit of the Greek pantheon thrown in, so the goddess as I see her is tall, slim and has dark hair and eyes, she is varied in age depending on which aspect she chooses, either a maiden, mother or crone, all beautiful and loving. The god is fun loving and full of laughter, he is tanned, is tall and wears a short beard he sometimes appears horned and resembles Pan. :D

I also sometimes see the Goddess in a rocking chair, but when I see her there she is an old woman. Also she is in an old cottage, there is a very Celtic feel about the room she is in. Anyway, I also see her with something in her hands and I can never remember or make out what it is that she is holding. So when I read Aventurine's post it spooked me a little!
But I also see the Goddess in other guises too, she appears as many different types of woman, and sometimes as birds or a hourse or a cat.
The God is always very dark and it feels like he is in a rage, understandable because he is there to protect the Goddess who is nature, and we have abused her for so long.

It appears that our paths avery similar...the only difference is instead of a little Greek tossed in, mine is Odinistic...other than that, we are bros! Ellegon is a dragon as well, btw...just thought you might like to know!

My vision of the Goddess is pretty easy to figure out.
<-------- She's right there!
I know it's pretty silly to use a comic book character as the represent the Goddess, but if you've ever read Dawn by Joseph Micheal Linsner, then you'll know what I'm talking about. It was a 6 issue mini series that came out a couple of years ago, and I highly recommend it. The second series, Return of the Goddess, is also very good, and shows a warrior aspect of the Goddess. The God is also represented as Cernunnos, the lord of the hunt and the personification of death.
I'm going to go hunt for a pic or 2 for an example and shall return! :D

I don't know why, but I've always seen the Goddess as a young woman, with long, blondish brown hair and blue eyes, seated on a grand throne in a white marble Temple. She's normal calm, but can get really annoyed with me at times (should have seen the fight we had over my name!) But most of all she is kind and loving, and gives the best hugs, just when I need them the most.

To me the goddess appears as a blonde woman about 6' tall. her hair is wrapped on top of her head in braids and she is wearing a white flowing gown, trim in gilded thread. She holds a rune bag in her hand and floats instead of walking. To quote a song by Heart..."funny how your feet in dreams never touch the earth..."
Bright blessings! :-p

i have drawn my own pictutes of the god and goddess (even though i believe in lots of them)
the goddess has a long gown (i have no colours in my picture so i dont know what colour it is) she has long, wavy hair, but also in some pictures she has straight hair. she has a belt around her middle made out of golden thread and she is very beautiful (i have not drawn any eyes of mouth of nose on her so you can think of her expression yourself ;)) the god is similar. he has trousers with a cape and he has short wavy hair.
both of the pictures are just made out of lines and things are missong, like the side of her dress and things, but it is just like an outline, so i guess it is kind of modern art. i dont know how i see the god and goddess but i think these pictures are nice anyway.
Love and magick

I see my Goddess most often in her warrior aspect.....long wavy black hair, dressed in armour holding a spear with a raven on her shoulder.....very Morrigu I know! I suppose it's because I've been needing a lot of strength the last few years. I most often see my God as a Dark figure, emerging from the woodlands, dressed in a black cloak, half covering his face. He brings words of wisdom and walks with me throught the astral planes.
Very interseting topic!

I tend to think of Them as being more modern, She more than He, though. I picture Her as a younger woman, small but strong and agile like a martial artist, with knee-length silver hair and red eyes. He is very tall with dark hair, pale and slim, and reserved, sometimes with glasses, antlers occasionally, both sometimes with wings.
I have another vision of Her which ends up being the inspiration for a *lot* of my drawings, and I'll try to post one of those below, but it may be too big...

Sorry, I don't picture the Goddess as a person. In my vision, she is a Mountain top thick with trees but, through the trees is a dessert plain full of life. The image varies by the season.
The God appears to me as a bright sky and through the animals of the forrest and dessert. A Buck often grazing on what the Goddess has to offer.
If were any kind of artist, I would paint it.

Even if I am feeling a little timid. :)
I've had a few different visions of the Goddess. I know that I have more to learn and probably more to see as time goes on.
There is one vision that I have had in which the Goddess is the night sky. In the sky, I see her face, gazing down on us all, like a mother looking in the cradle of her sleeping children. I have felt her presence in several places (most confusing was in a cathedral, I didn't think I'd have *that* happen). I've only had partial visions of Brigt (some one please tell me the correct spelling of her name). Usually of her hands as she is making something, binding a wound or some other hurt, or guiding me some how. When I see her guiding me, it is as though she is standing behind me and reaching around me to show me how to do something.
<shivers a little> I've had quite afew dreams of the Morrigu. I don't remember their names at the moment. One was an old woman, but she wasn't like the frail, stooped image of the crone that everyone likes to paint. She appeared to me as a tall woman, her hair the color of steel. Her eyes were dark brown, almost black and she wore a black dress. Over her dress, she wore a black cape with the cowl over her head. At her side, she wore a black handled dagger in a red sheath. This was the only one that seemed to have some compassion in her gaze. It was that heavy handed and stern look that a mother gives her children when they're in a serious situation.
The second was a younger woman, in her mid to late twenties. This one, thinking of her still makes me shiver. She also wore black. She wore a long gown and she had a spear in hand. The spear was made out of ash and the tip was steel. Her gown was sleeveless, leaving her athletic and powerful arms visible. About her right arm, she wore an armband with a triscale in the center. On her left arm, she wore one that was fashioned to look like a snake coiled abou her arm. When the head and the tail met, there was a knotwork pattern of three snakes that came together. Her face was beautiful, but it chilled me. It was covered in blood, with evidence of a few small healed wounds near her brow. Her hair was a rust brown and matted in spots where blood had dried in it. <shudders> When she spoke in the dreams, her voice was dispassionate and cold.
The third was a young woman, possibly in her early teens. She wore white. It wasn't a pure white, but a white that would be found in natural cloth that wasn't bleached enough. It knotted over her right shoulder and had a red belt. From the belt hung a hook, it looked slightly rusty but wicked. Her eyes were blue as ice and they were just as cold. Her hair was not long, like the other two. It was shorter and braided back tightly. She wore no jelwery but there was a gold comb in her hair.

Can't talk of one and not the other. :)
I've had a vision of the God that still haunts me. I saw him as a young man. He was a youthful warrior with hair that was the color of ripe wheat. His skin was tanned to a faint copper/bronze and he was dressed like most people picture the ancient Celts dressing. He wore a gold torque about his neck that looked like a twisted rope or sheaf of grain. He had a spear that was also made of Ash, the tip of it was bronze and it glowed like the full moon. He also wore a crown that had a small set of antlers on it.
And then there is the darker aspect of the God. I'm still learning more about this image. He is a tall, powerfully built man with the full rack of a Great Stag. He has a low voice and he seems to move like a wolf or some other preditor. I can't really say much more about this image of the God other then he usually makes me rather uncomfortable. The feeling of being hunted tends to do that to me, and this aspect of the God makes me feel like that in a very strong way.
<shrugs> But there's my 2 cents. If you look at the poem that I posted about him in the Dark Spirituality class 4, it might be a better description.

Don't be timid. When it comes to visions, only you can put the pieces together. They will mean to you what they mean and that is something that no one can teach you.

You're welcome.
I will also share this with you. This is something that Kolisius (my spiritual father) taught me long ago:
Always listen to the student. Often, the student becomes the teacher. Should the teacher disregard this fact, the teacher might miss the lesson all together.
That too is written in my book.
Never hesitate to speak your mind when applicable.
Blessings to you,

I have a figurine that was given to me as a Mother's Day gift a few years ago. It's a beautiful Art Nouveu lady and she's wearing a pale ocean blue dress that wraps around her figure which has flowers strewn all around it. She's holding a few blossoms in her hand and she has a very serene look on her face. She looks as though she's just stepped out of the ocean, maybe walking along the beach with the wind still blowing around her. Somehow this is the image that I usually have of the goddess. Someone with human form but who is also part of nature at the same time. The image I have of the god is always a stag. Standing strong and silent in a wild forest where everything is always lush and very green.

I have seen Isis many times. I believe that the Goddess has incarnated herself many many times and each time has taken a different form - Sometimes human, sometimes animal and sometimes celestial. I think that she appears as a human to help us to relate better to her. I see her as Isis, a beautiful, vuluptuous dark haired woman in her late twenties to mid thirties. She cloaks herself in white and silver - the colors of the moon - except for her rich Carnellian and turquois jewels. Last year I saw her twice. The first time was to tell me that my father had passed away (just five minutes later the doctor came out to tell us that my dad had just passed). The second during the first night of his wake. She was with him, and he was awed by her beauty, love and light. She was allowing him to see how many people loved and appreciated him - before preparing him for what comes next. I've seen her several times in the past 11 years. Before that, I believed that the God power was nature. It was only then that I realized that she has many identities.

I realized that I didn't mention how I see the God. That is because a male deity is missing from my life. Just as a man is missing from my life. Funny, I have had many men in my life, but never got too attached or felt that they held any real importance for me. Kinda what I feel about a male deity. I like Horus, Anubis, and Ganesh, but they are secondary to me, and not vital.

Rant would like to offer himself as your psuedo-god for the time being, if allowed. I hold little power but to thwart off intruders - especially when I am Sky Clad and in the midst of ritual in the middle of the dessert. I can make lemonade and offer conversation. Even help those in need to a degree. I have no horns but seek the tranquility of the mothers creatures.

Does that really matter? This is not a nude wedding so we don't really know who the "best Man" is. I don't mind being skyclad but, I would rather there be a fire to provide warmth.
Do you have a fire?

In Wales, Kerridwen didn't have a consort until the Celts arrived.

I vaguely remember hearing that. Recently I read that Hathor was also consortless and was replaced by Isis who did have a consort (her brother Osiris). It's like who came first the chicken or the egg - or the goddess or the god. I think the Great Goddess stood alone for a long time before the males cut in on the action. At least that is where archeology has been pointing.

Merry Merry,
It changes with the seasons and with my moods. Being an artist,
ihave pictured the God and goddess many ways, but most of all in a
loving all encompassing embrace, made of stars. I have a picture of Tristam
and Isolde in embrace that personifies the embrace for me , as well .

I always saw the Goddess as a tall and thin woman, but not so thin as magazine models-- a healthy sort of thin. She has long, flowing black hair that shines like onyx in light and is as deep as night in shadow. Her skin is pale, and lit with a star-shine sort of glow. She wears a dess that is deep blue, like the first dark of night, and the folds hold stars and glaxies. Sometimes there's the earth in her hand, or the moon, and the sun sometimes rest on her brow or throat or stomach.
She has green eyes, and always smiles like a new mother.

I see the Goddess and God as beings of energy, in partly human form.
They are hugging on another, the goddess has wonderful gold white hair, and eyes mixed with all the colours of the universe, her cheeks are rosy and she has a happy content expression, and expression of wisdom beyond imagining.
The god at her side Also has that colour hair , it is sholderlength though whereas the goddesses hair is an endless length, his expression is that of glowing happiness and love and wisdom, .
Together they are floating at edge of the universe watching all of their creation. They are surrounded
many glowing angels and their combined light surrounds the universe.
Thats how i see them :)
