I just found this interesting internet site that teaches meditation, it says to use a manta, a possitive word, durning meditation to reinforce the positive feel, and make it easier to eneter into the meditation. I have never used one, but it sounds great! I was just wondering if anyone elese has ever herd of this, or better yet tried it. I would love to hear how it worked for others?

Here is the list of positive mantras to use:
Ah-nam, Ra-ma, Shan-ti, Shi-rim, Hush, Sha-lom, Shee-tah, Peacse, Shee-ou-humm, Vis-ta, Hill-lah, Gentle

The site is called The Silver Circle, sorry no www

:( I bookmarked thought. I will find the www later and post it here!

Bless Be,
Kahlan

A mantra is just a sound you make to help you to clear & focus your mind. It could be 'chocolate' (now that's positive reinforcement!). :T A specific word or sound can also help to raise specific types of energy. I chant the names of the Runes to raise the energy of each one.

Yes, I use mantra in meditation as well as positive affirmations. Those are phrases you repeat over & over to build positive qualities. When I'm doing yoga, I use the OM sound. When that's done right, you can feel the vibrations go through your body.

One note of caution, before using any words or sounds, it's a good thing to find out what it means first.

actually, there are different kinds of mantras for different purposes. affirmations can be one type. i guess the 'classic' is a one syllable sound with no meaning that can be 'vibrated', so your mind can become blank and not fixate on one idea. 'Om' is probably the most popular one.

According to The Witch's Magical Handbook by Gavin and Yvonne Frost chants are very effective energy raisers; they usually include a repeated word or mantra. They list some suggested chant words along with pitch and speed for various purposes such as love, luck, wealth, etc.

ex. Homm spoken medium and flowing and at a medium speed for protection, or Aye-oh high and wailing at a fast speed for healing. Presumably these and the others listed were chosen by the Frosts due to vibration and their experience using them.

well, that sounds good. i mean, different vibrations for different effects.
i must say that i've never cared much for the Frost's writings though.

I've had some positive results with mantras; very similar to chanting, sort of more basic in a way, or at least that's how I use them. Mantras are more like simple sounds as opposed to the words used in chanting.

That is to say, mantras are a form of chanting, but chanting doesn't always involve mantras. Something like that

"Om Nami Shivaya Hum" (spelling? I think that's right) is a common mantra too. I like it, though I have to admit to being very neglectful with my meditating lately!

I do have a passage (rather long) which is like a mantra to me (though it's not really a mantra because it's so long). It's about a lotus. It's more of a relaxation/letting go tool for me.

I never really considered mantras as a "power raising" tool. Chants yes (and I suppose they can be very similar), but I always thought mantras were like Rick indicated - something to clear and focus the mind while meditating. And once the mind is clear you get your visions or reach that point of relaxation.
