View Full Version : Philanthropic work?

Many of you here know that I've been looking for a job for a while. I love my jewelry work but it really doesn't pay the bills (for now) and with the sudden family 'crisis' going on, extra money would be really good right now. (Not to mention moving!)
Anywhoo, after getting some offers from insurance companies (something I really don't want to do) I decided that whatever I do I'd like it to mean something.
My ideal would be to work with animals. But due to health reasons I can't do that. :(
So I've been looking up jobs in philanthropy and found some good links that are like Monster but for charity organizations. So far though, I'm not really qualified for anything, yet. But I'm enjoying looking at the sites to see what's out there!
Does anyone here know of any sites like this that I can check out? I will of course be looking up individual organizations as well, but thought I'd do a little 'networking' here as well! :)
With all that's happened to folks all over the world, especially in just the past year, I'd really like to give back while I'm making a new life for myself. Or rather, (and sounding a little better), I'd like my future work to mean something. It would be great if this was possible you know? :D

How about checking with your local charities that work with aging and senior citizens? You know insurance so you could help them with insurance questions, billing issues etc. as well as other good advice and help. Check with the state programs too. They often need people to help with the state eligiblity programs and in their own insurance departments. Good luck hun. Job hunting Juju to you.

Ironically, I don't know anything about insurance!
For some reason I keep getting offers from insurance companies but it's only because of my sales experience. One place that I almost ended up working in last year was just creepy. They are a very famous company but their sales techniques bordered on cult-ish and I just got the heebie-jeebies thinking about living that way. :blushake:
There are a few places around here that I'm going to check out--Americares headquarters is not too far from me and they've done amazing work for disasters and such. My mother got to work with them briefly when she went down to Ground Zero a month after 9/11 and she said they are incredibly well organized. So I may check them out. There are also a few others that I need to look up as well.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll let you know what happens!!! :hugz:

Well dang, missed that boat and headed to the air port huh? So much for my ESP... :nyah:
Well, you may still be able to look at state jobs and elder advocacy programs. However if you have good sales experience, how about fund raising? Good Job Juju regardless.
(Wanders off questioning how wrong can wrong I be???? Off base, no, not in the ball park... sheesh... oh well... hmmm.... la la la... )

If you don't mind traveling and there's nothing holding you back, you can join the Peace Corps. they cover the expenses and at the end of it all they give you money to help you reajust to life back in the states. While you're away they give you a living allowance. You get to travel and help people. :) Good thing is, no experience is necessary. I dont know....just a thought.

:rotfl: Don'tcha worry cutie, I won't tell anyone! :rotfl:
I've been looking all day at different sites and found one called the Charity Navigator that rates charities, groups them by state and has links to websites...so I have a lot of stuff to see!
HH--thanks for the idea and I would in a heartbeat except for the travel. I don't fly :blushake: and I don't do the boat thing either. So that would definately be a problem. But I like that whole idea. :) :spaceman:
What I'm checking into, at least today, are a couple of groups that rehabilitate wildlife including birds and marine animals. I can work with them without too much trouble with my allergies or asthma so that might be something. I have to say though, I get deeply emotionally involved with animals so I may have to reconsider it somewhat as far as the hands-on work. (See my last post in the furble energy thread as a perfect example!) It would end up taking a toll on me physically after a while and that would do no one, furble or not any good.
I'm really listening to you guys and taking notes so I do fully appreciate everything you have all been saying. So thank you so, so much! :hugz:
