I though book burnings were a thing of the past. But, I guess not. At least people protested this one. I got this from cnn.com.

ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico (AP) -- As hundreds protested nearby, a church group burned Harry Potter and other books.

Jack Brock, the Christ Community Church founder and pastor, said the books burned Sunday were "a masterpiece of satanic deception."

"These books teach children how they can get into witchcraft and become a witch, wizard or warlock," Brock said. Members sang "Amazing Grace" as they threw Potter books, plus some other books and magazines, into the fire.

Across the street, protesters chanting "Stop burning books" stretched in a line a quarter of a mile long.

"It may be useless but we want (the church) to know the community is not behind them," said Joann Booth, who protested with her four grandchildren. One protester dressed up as Adolf Hitler.

Brock told the congregation that he viewed the attention the church received as a blessing.

"There are those that are doing their best to make us look bad." Brock said. "But because of this, I've been able to preach the gospel around the world."

A letter to the Alamogordo Daily News inviting the community to attend the fire sparked debate in the town of 36,000. On Tuesday, protesters held signs reading "Book burning? Shame on our town" in front of the public library. Inside was a display highlighting the books.

when I first read it[bbc] I couldn't beleive it. After a minute of thought I saw how good it fitted them. I remembered pictures from Indiana Jones and The last crusade, where those NAZI's were burning books too.

History returns, maybe now some more people will see how christianity is degradating[spelling] mankind.

I know, I didn't mean what I meant with christianity.
I have some good christian friends, but I have stopped refering to them as christians. Christianity has now tht fundamental meaning to me.
Of course you are right about those fundamentalists in every religion, but these last two months I have met some of the most extreme christians ever, so now everything tht has smth to do with christianity appears to me as the extreme side of it.
I have to place my thoughts now. Find another word for christian fundamentalists. Maybe you have smth in mind?

I went to Catholic school k-12 and when I graduated we had a big book burning at a friend's house. My boyfriend at the time (who did not go to my school) was pretty shocked at a bunch of "Catholic" kids burning books like Nazis. :) Sorry, off topic but I thought it was funny.

Ya I have been looking for a term that better suites them without being insulting or anything, for now they are just 'fundy's'. Hey any one speak whatever tongue wicca is said to come form? If so I think the opposite of wicca (to bend, to shape, some say wise man/woman) would work well... but that creates problems in and of itself...

Oh ya I couldnt find the article, it was good to. oh well live and learn to bookmark.

Dang I feel special. Isn't it amusing how us peaceful Pagans can piss off so many people without doing anything? Ah let them worry...it gives them something to do. Anothe thing...i've heard fundamentalist Christians get all upset saying "well i saw on TV that Hitler practiced witchcraft!!" then talking about how Harry Potter books should be burned. Hmm. define hypocrisy.

lol
I prefer the more obvious hypocrisy that they are basing the whole thing on a dream which they are not allowed to do by divine law as dream interpritation is considered to be unclean in gods eyes and god will 'set his face against' those who practice it!

Over the summer there was a big Harry Potter book burning at a pentacostal church near where I live (West Virginia). I always find it funny that they burn books they have never read because they are not allowed to read them but then how do they know what's really in them? And don't they have to buy the books they burn? I mean someone paid for them which means they are supporting the author. Strange!

:) let me see if I understand this right

Mr Righteuos decides Harry Potter books are evil and promotes witchcraft..... so he decides to stage a book burning, complete with media covg and interviews that only allow his isde to be told...and no one gets to see any other views.....*sniff *sniff

I smell Propaganda.

Mr Righteous needs books for the book burning...so he goes out and spends who knows how much of the "church's" money, which could be used to feed a needy family or something....

I smell Stupidity

yeah, what a world we live in...... and the sad thing is, people actually are stupid enough to support this ....

whats next......
"Lets burn the cinema complex" ?????

I can see the mob gathering with thier torches at night, and them going to burn the theater...... Ludicrist? you say?

well if they were blind enough to let a self righteous constitutional amendment violator take them back to the days of Hitler's Germany...... this is their mentality also....

Sad
but hey, it did sell alot of books

by protesting the book burning, the church got a bigger turnout
and a lot of press...all good for them, well worth the books they
burned. And they will come out looking like they are being
persecuted by the masses who love harry potter.

Need a way to protest those kind of things without giving them
the help and satisfaction that they crave. I mean if no one
showed to protest, not much of a story, no masses or press to
preach to...end of story. Small army of bigots stays small.

Perhaps the protestors should have looked into other avenues
of action. Is there a ban on public fires of certain size? Burning
toxic fumes(glue in binding, plastic if wrapped)?

What I don't understand is that there is always magic of some kind or another in children's stories - Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty - almost any fairy tale you can think of. So, why the backlash against this book? Is it because the main character is a boy and not a damsel in distress - imprisoned in some way by an evil witch?

And do they really believe that Harry Potter teaches people how to be witches or that the Hogwarts school is an actual place? It's pathetic.

First off - I love those books. To death. I've read every one to date, and I own one in hardcover (Goblet of Fire). NOWHERE in there does it mention Satan or anything. In fact, they're usually classic "good moral character against evil bad guy hideous monster character." I think Harry Potter would be more likely to get into heaven than to go hell. I have no trouble, however, picturing You-Know-Who going to hell! ;)

-_-; honesly, burning books? Don't they realize they're just SUPPORTING the franchise? -_-; baka. . . (that's Japanese for "idiot.")

*GOOD OL' WHOLLUP WITH THE BAKA STICK*

I can't belive they burned them. . . I don't own the 2nd one!!! And they just burned it?? Come on! I would've GLADLY taken it off their hands for them! :wah:
