Well, in five years we have not pruned our database, but it is time, folks. =) Looks like I might be able to squeeze some more processor power out of this server we are on if I get rid of some of the trash in the database.

So, here is what I am going to do. I am going to be removing old usernames that have had no activity since before 1-1-2004 and have 0 posts.

Should be pretty safe...but I wanted to let you all know because our member count is going to go down. =)

seems a good idea... i always wonder how patient forums are with people who register but never do anything. I looked at one the other day and found i was still registered which I'd completely forgotten about.

Hey, we're back to 18,000 members now! We'll have to have a recruitment drive to get back up to 20,000 then we can have another party.

I was wondering what had happened. I thought I was losing my mind. (No, wait. I lost that a long time ago. Never mind.)

=)I just saw the much reduced count. It should make going through the Member List much quicker! Last time I was in there I was appalled by the number of people who registered and then disappeared tying up perfectly good usernames.....

P.S. I just looked. We have an echo again......

I wonder how many would be left if all the inactives disappeared.
3,061 have 0 posts and have been registered since before 2005 started.
Haha, if I did the math right there are 5,555 people with 0 posts that registered before 2006. If I were in charge I'd probably go overboard with the clearing and probably only have a 4 figure number for members. I tend to do that with the harddrive or stuff around the house.

I think that would stink. I dont post much but i no i always have a place to come home too and I think that is what people come back for. I have made friends here and would love to stay with them this is my space where I can be me. So just because we dont post often dont mean where not here!!

Sweet. 17,000ish is a much more impressive number than 20,000ish when those 17,000 are actually active.

That would be sad to purge people. I do not post much but I do read and respond only when there is something that interests me. Might be there are some that read observe and learn from the posts in here.

I don't think that there is going to be a mass purge, but people who don't post and haven't in two years are probably people who created an account and forgot about it or just stopped coming to MW or something. If anyone's account is erased who actually wants one, I'm sure they can speak to mol about it.

if in two years no one's found anything interesting enough to reply to, then it's probably not the most interesting site for them, I'd have thought. There's a couple of forums I signed up to but i decided i didn't like the way people called each other 'dumbass', least you don't get that here.

I do believe you can check activity on an account, too... so even if you don't post there is still evidence you're still "active."

We will NEVER purge anyone who has *visited the site* in the past couple of years, either. Lurkers are loved here at MW, too.

Purging will only happen to those folks who regsitered, and never made a post, and never actually came back to the site in over 2 years, at least.

I have a subscriber whose last activity on MW was in 2003. =) She started here subscription 2 months ago and hasn't been back to the forum and post yet. Lurker. And that is way ok.

I am very careful with who and what gets purged around here. I tend to focus on accounts that were most likely created to spam with.

Did I ever share my "mw story"? I didn't participate until after a year and half of getting a username and password. The only reason I logged back in was because I received a newsletter from mol. His newsletter arrived at my email, I opened it and checked it out... from there I was hooked. I probably didn't become active earlier because I was too timid to delve deep into a pagan community. It was overwhelming for me. But now, I couldn't imagine my life with MW. :)

My story is similar to BrigidMoon, I got a username and password but was really afraid to post. After I got an email from mol with a newsletter. I came back. The newsletter came at a time in my life when I was really down. Thanks to all the people here I am feeling great again. I suffer bipolar and since coming to this site I have learned how to stabilize my moods and to also control the depression. I got some great advice and it has been wonderful. I love everyone here even if I don't post every day.
