Erisians are those who worship Eris, Discordians are the ones who believe in the philosophy of Discordianism but not the Goddess, except as a symbol or something...Discordians tend to be more politically aligned and interested also.

And so it begins.....

Anyway, in general, Erisians are more into the religion and Discoridans are more into OM and pranks.

In particular, there may not be any difference, as we all use the Principia Discordia for toilet paper, we all Hail Eris, All Hail Discordia, we all have the yin and yang of our Sacred Chao as a symbol, we all, except the ones who don't, have a religion disguised as a joke disguised as a religion for our religion disguised as a joke disguised as a religion.

Don't listen to them. I'm the only one qualified to answer this question because I'm the High Papessa. Seriously, I can answer this one because I'm both an Erisian and a Discordian.

We Erisians believe in Eris as an actual deity to be worshipped, sort of. At least most of us do. We're more into the philosophical/theological aspects of our irreligion than those trashy Discordians will ever be. Verthaine's a good example of an Erisian and he's also the reason I'm one of us - he made me Keeper of the Cookies and that was an offer I couldn't refuse.

On the other hand, a Discordian is more likely not to view Eris as an actual entity, but more as a idealization of a certain philosophy. An archetype. We're a lot more fun that those stuffy old Erisians ever dreamed of being - even if we do tend to get carried away sometimes.

What is the Sacred Chao?

The Sacred Chao is the Discordian symbol of the Universal balance between the forces of Hodge and Podge, like this

http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=tbn:Jf0nkRAYsT8J:http://www.poee.org/images/197/sacred_chao.jpg

The pentagon represents order and the apple disorder.

What is the Sacred Chao?

So, like the yin/yang symbol, the sacred chao represents a balance between order and disorder... is that correct?

Yeah, pretty much. A Chao is a single unit of chaos, and chaos is a mixture of order and disorder...

Yes, no maybe, sometimes, never, always, to them but not us, to us but not them, "what kind of Discordian are you that you want balance", "balance the order and disorder, that is the way of the Discordians", and five tons of flax.

Lunacie
January 9th, 2006, 05:58 PM
"...and five tons of flax." ?

I know another Pagan whose siggie line is "flax and fodder", is it possible that she also follows the Discordian path?

A mixture of order and disorder, eh? That sounds pretty natural and normal for most of us. The name Discordian made me wonder if the focus was mostly on the disorder.

Well, you can really take it one of two ways. You can either look at balance in terms of the individual, or the world. In both there is generally too much order, and by taking an opposing side you could be restoring overall balance. The main idea is that order isnt actually that great, that chaos has been maligned through the centuries and, when looked at closely, neither of them actually have a set moral value.

Lunacie
January 9th, 2006, 06:05 PM
Order can certainly be too limiting, too confining.

However there has hardly been too much order in MY life.
Finding more of a balance seems appealing to me.
Ask anyone with A.D.D. and I'd bet they say the same thing.

eldora_avalon

Chaos contains within it order and disorder, but most people only think of disorder. In common usage it may mean that, but to mathemagicans, it is something else. You can look at a system that looks completely disorderly and find it is perfectly orderly, but you have to use Chaos to do it. Like a dripping faucet that goes drip...drip...drip.drip.....drip...drip..drip.drip...drip...drip
Somewhere out there is a mathematical forumla that describes this system.

I have never at any time had too much order in my life. Order has never outweighed disorder, seriously.

Then there is creative order versus destructive order. Destructive order constricts, which one may debate keeps it from being order at all.

Destrutive disorder is debateable, because sometimes creative order can come from it. Creative disorder is almost always a good thing.

The more you force order into a Chaotic system, the more disorderly it can become. And btw, all systems are Chaotic ;)

Praying to Eris is a bad idea. You dont know what might be listening, or whats may happen. If you like to live in what the Chinese call "interesting times" is a good idea, but otherwise.... Unless she isn't that Eris.

Praying to Eris is a really really really bad idea. It's not always a good thing to draw her attention, especially if she's busy doing something interesting when you bother her. If she decides on her own she wants to talk to you then that's a different story. Sometimes.

hehehe, see you guys are catching on and you thought we were soooo very different :abanana:

We are here because Verthaine started posting here and was concerned about some of the posts in Political Pagan. We Discordians showed up, we posted links. We tried very hard to make sure that the human side was not left out of the stories. Especially Justin's story. He was victimised over the internet by adult men from the time he was 13. They gave him presents and money and helped him set up a website to posts hi pictures. This is the kid who gave all the credit card info and IM transcripts and everything else to the feds to try to keep this from happening again.

The thread in Political Pagan focused on the reporter from the NY Times getting information 'illegally', but since the information was Justin's to give, there was nothing illegal about it. The reporter, who also got Justin into rehab and college, was compared to the NSA and bush.

The NSA were listening in on a cell phone call, they knew the person they were looking for was in the car because they recognised his voice. I can't recognise my sisters voice on her cell phone, but I digress. The NSA also knew other people were in the car. A rocket was fired into it anyway.

Now, to me, someone who helps someone get out of child porn, off drugs and into college is a good guy. Someone who fires a rocket into a car without knowing who is in it, let alone the legality of the wiretap, not so much.

Sorry this wasn't answered sooner, but a lot of us feel unwelcome here right now. It seems to many of us that the respect rule doesn't apply to Discordians, in that, we are to show respect to others, but no one needs to show respect to us. I got plenty of places I can go to feel unwelcome, I don't need to come here for that.

I'm not that sensitive. I came over because I heard a lot of buzzing noises in regards to this place. I dont know that any real damage has been done to anybody, and dont really understand the insectile clicking sounds things have been making lately. Discordians have little in common except for the belief that most things shouldnt be taken seriously, and how we as individuals interpret that runs the gamut from Internet Badguy to Insightful Comedian. Even the Bar and Grill, which has been referenced off and on this board, is just a sub-forum of another sub-forum (which no longer exists).

Now me, personally, I'm in your life because life is like a hyena on PCP that thinks it can talk, even though it doesnt have the ability to do anything but mimick human sound in some kind of bizarre mockery of language.

Well, I've already said this, but I for one hope you Discordians stay. I'm sorry if you feel badly done by MW...you wouldn't be the first. I can't count how many times we've had tidal waves of those who come and then those who leave in droves. If I had a dime for every "Good bye, I'm leaving MW" thread...I'd be out of credit card debt at the very least. :)

That being said, I think, headgames aside, you guys have added a spicy element to MW that's been lacking since our membership went up so high. Plus all the metatext and subtext to your conversations here and on the B&G just keep me going for hours. LOL So for that, I thank you.

Anyway, please stick it out for a while longer. I pretty much doubt the lot of you will be banned anymore, so please don't worry on that one much longer (not that all you do, but I sensed when I lurked at the B&G there was that feeling that you were all about to be booted en masse). Please try to enjoy yourselves and relax here (do Discordians relax?). I really REALLY hope you stay and become a subcommunity within our own.

That often happens with reports...it's a good thing to know about that process, that the mod/admin could choose to simply go into "admin mode" and reprimand/try to get things on track, or they could just close it altogether. Depends on the thread and what went down, and it depends on the mod.

We relax better than just about anyone. We let all the crap out through screaming, yealling bitching and laughing. Holding it in is what makes you feel like crap. It is also what makes you want everyone else to hold it in.

We just aren't used to such heavy handed moderation, we are used to pretty much no moderation, so to get the little messages and for Little Billy to get banned, especially when the bannination message said something about ''for your sins"? That was very puzzling.

Spicy element, hehehe, we may have to add that to one of our sacred texts,

Ah...I remember that thread. Xen was responding to the last sentence in LB's rant. I explained that to him--about why Xen banned him out of hand like that. See, trolls often come here and just blast with a bunch of vomitous b.s. So, Xen reacted as he would with a troll. And in reading the subtext, I pretty much think that at that point, LB *was* sort of trolling, though he changed tactics and really, I think he started to settle in here and like it somewhat.

Anyway, please don't judge this place by its reaction to your, ahem, invasion alone. Give it time...I think you'll find there's a place for Discordians...and you might even get your own subforum...there are enough of you after all...

Heh, he's been banned off and on from almost all of the discordian forums at one time or another. In truth, I think he got kind of a raw deal, because there is a lot to him once you know him well enough... but its a hard act to swallow, because he bites pretty hard when he's upset.

And yeah, the heavy moderation is kind of a trip that we're not entirely used to. That kind of scrutiny, especially to me, seems kind of silly... while I understand the need to keep the forums in order, and while I am a very firm advocate of respect, I dont think that equates to walking on eggshells for people. I am likely to disagree with people, I am likely to question people as an excersize in making them think, I am likely to ask questions for my own benefit, and I am likely to try and provoke discussion. I do not feel that these things are inherantly disrespectful, at least not until it becomes personally insulting. Then again, I'm a fairly insensitive person to a lot of things.

Although, I was kind of hoping I'd get banned first, which is why I asked Xentor to ban me. He didnt.

Well, again, I think he was just being treated like a troll--and you notice it wasn't a "banned forever" proposition--it was a "for one day" to see if he was serious or had had his fun and would now "go away" and "be in peace" lol.

But I see your point. Having not been here since the beginning, you'd probably wonder why the "heavy hand"--which, by the way, is pretty damned LIGHT compared to a lot of moderations at other religious forums I've seen. Here, there's no thought police. You just have to respect, that's it. I know that word, respect, means different things to different people, and that is why the mods actually collaborate, disagree and arbitrate each others' decisions as well.

See, MW used to have a bunch of rules...some necessary, some lame. One day mol just decided, screw it, what we really want from our members is one thing: Respect. So that became "it"--the "one rule"--for all to abide by. It's been alot easier to handle and manage, and they aren't all that unilateral when it's applied and judged to be mishandled.

Anyway...lol. Like I said...you'd get "used to it" and around it in your own way if you stayed for any length of time.

And there's always MWAD, which is pretty friggin' unmoderated, lmao.

Okay, there are forums which are much more heavily moderated, and some which are much less moderated. Like Jeanne said, this isn't bad for a forum with different religions and a political forum. ;) And with the number of posters here and the sheer volume of posting, there has to be some sort of moderation or it would all devolve into utter chaos... oh, yeah... you'd like that, wouldn't you. :T

Errrhmmm.

Story time.

Once upomn a time when I was bit younger than I am now - fewer wrinkles and all that jazz I belonged to a couple of Yahoo pagan forums. I also belonged to a chat that got trolled most often by snerts.

Well, now some pagans can be just as nasty as those they complain about mind you. Anyways, one day, this pagan comes in ranting and raving about this horrid fundamental Christian forum. More and more would complain about it because they would go over there and do the "You bigoted fundie" spiels, get ripped and then banned...

<aside my six year old just came in and shared with me the mommy snuggle times for the next week...yes she schedules me in>

Okay, back to story.

I created a less "paganized" screen name and signed up for it. Admittedly, there were many things that set me aback. Basic fundamental Christian site. I lurked mostly - posted some. Nothing inflammatory. Just questions. And, if those of you who have read my posts, I tend to discuss and try to look at all sides. So that was about it. In the meantime, I watched pagan after, so-called peace loving pagan come in and flame.

I also got to know these fundamental Christians and hell I liked them. Didn't care that they thought my kind would burn in damnation. It was their belief and I could respect that.

However, one day I lost my temper. No swearing just a very firm post aimed at a pagan troll. Yup a nasty little pagan troll.

Not to long after that the owner of the board posted to me. She knew I was a pagan from close to the beginning. I was allowed to stay because I was courteous, respectful, and had started some good discussions. I felt badly. I hid it initially to see what the rampaging was about. I may not have liked some of the things I read but I liked the people. So I stayed and I kept my religion secret.

She went on to say she wasn't going to ban me. That I was more than welcome there.

I did apologize to all of them in relation to that post. I explained that, though we have extremely different religious beliefs that I stayed because I really liked them as people. And I hadn't kept it secret to troll but because I wanted to be judged for the person I am and not stereotypes. I did admit I initially came in due to frothing at the mouth pagans. I believe in seeing things for myself you see.

Well I got on real well with these people. Oh sure there were a few who were mad at the owner for letting me stay. Just as there were pagans that came in and were really pissed at me for hanging around a Christian board.

I received an emailed curse of slow death threat from one who came in spouting about how great the Wiccan Rede is and that it is better than the Ten Commandments. I turned on that person and told them that the Rede is extremely subjective (no offense meant to the Wiccans here) IMO and who defines harm.

Didn't take long before I was really considered the turncoat of the online pagan set.

Used to have the best talks with this Baptist Minister from Texas.

Moral?

Hmmmm I think I forgot what my point was.

I check out all links and I don't judge by labels. I judge by the quality of the person or the quality and manner in which a person communicates.

I don't care if you are an aethiest, agnostic, christian, pagan, heathen, wiccan, chaotic, discordian, neurotic, quick to temper or slow to temper..............

So I guess I add again that I have, personally, enjoyed you discordians.

For the most part you have shown a sense of humor. Intelligence. Strong communication skills, courtesty and respect.

That makes you cool in my book.

Not that anyone reads it! :T

This whole thing reminds me of The Quiet Man with John Wayne.

"Red Will" Danaher: So the I.R.A. is in this too, is it?
Hugh Forbes: If it were, Red Will Danaher, not a scorched stone of your fine house would still be standing.
Michaleen Flynn: A beautiful sentiment!

We didn't show up to trash the place, we came out of curiosity. Vincent is really quite slow to anger, but once he gets going, look out. When he talked about being upset about some of the posts here, I hade to find out what it was about. I am like the cat and it may yet kill me, but I am very curious. I seem to share that with my fellow Discordians, even those that don't seem to have much in common with me.

Sorry this wasn't answered sooner, but a lot of us feel unwelcome here right now. It seems to many of us that the respect rule doesn't apply to Discordians, in that, we are to show respect to others, but no one needs to show respect to us. I got plenty of places I can go to feel unwelcome, I don't need to come here for that.

lol That's how conservatives feel in the political pagan forum, that is, before we increased our numbers. Mysticwicks can be a strange place. There are many times I haven't felt welcome here, but feelings are misleading and often not really worth further consideration. There are so many people here that it is easy to find a group or two with whom you can interact. There is something for everyone. Just don't expect everyone to agree with you or enjoy you. :) The gods know there are many people here that don't enjoy me, but I think they're stupid. :gagged:

Reading back through a bit, and just wanted to mention that a lot of people have felt that way, but I have yet to see an unfair banning or uneven application of the rule of respect. Mol is so fair that it makes me sick because he's so much younger than I am and he's way more fair than me. Good advice for those who want manageable hair. I usually like mine short and spikey and out of control, so I do just the opposite. :crazyman:

I color it sometimes, never use conditioner and buy the cheapest generic brand of dandruff shampoo I can find. But, and this is my secret, I get it cut every three weeks and keep it very short, which means that most of the hair on my head is new and hasn't had time to sustain much damage yet.

I do ingest flax seed oil and cook with olive oil and that helps keep my hair shiny and soft, though.

Matter of personal preference and interpretation, entirely. I personally have never thought of discordianism as a religion, or even a philosophy, but its not quite a joke either. Certainly a lot of it has helped shaped my general attitude and ethos (which remains pretty limber, due to my practice of stretching it), but once we control five weird groups we win the game.

Anubis

Acutally, I suspect the biggest problem is that Discordians do things for their OWN amusement, which may, or may not, coincide with your amusement. Some of us would allow ourselves to be put in cages, see above.

Discordians eat everything and nothing. We have everything from strict vegans to strict carnivores to vampires. Careful which variety you get, you may end up going all over town looking at every health food store for tofurkey or buying a lot of expensive steak or you may end up at the blood bank trying to explain why you need a pint of blood as mixer in a real Bloody Mary.
