This is from my training wing. I didn't know any of the guys aboard, but it's sobering to a guy getting ready to start the first phase of flight training that this can happen even to a seasoned instructor and a highly trained contractor.

The plane went missing Tuesday and was found last night. 4 crewmembers, no survivors.

Crikey. Sympathetic energies sent to their families and friends.
For you, Pawnman, everything we do is a risk. We're much more likely to be killed driving down the highway than you will be flying up above us, especially since you're getting all that safety training. But I'm sure it makes you take a second thought.

How does a plane like that go down without a mayday. Flying too low to get one out in time?

The kind of training they were doing routinely involves low-altitude flight. Get a bad bearing at those speeds, and you can hit a hillside or mountain before you realize it's there.
