View Full Version : 25 Straight Days of Rain and counting...

We've had 25 days of rain here--without a break. Eight more days and we break the record set back in the fifties. I'm talking rain, not showers. And the next two weeks? Predictions say "Rain."
Rivers are flooding all over the place, hillsides can't handle more water and there are mudslides and debris slides happening, a few homes have gone sliding down the hillsides (will people ever get it through their head--don't build on a hillside over here in the rainy part of the state?). Some roads have been closed because the water is undermining them and they're caving in.
Heavy snows in the mountains means avalanche danger so they are closing the passes off and on to do control work on it.
The ground is so saturated it can't absorb much more water. And it's looking like all rivers and streams in western Washington are vulnerable to flooding at this point. It's raining. A lot.
This is not the lovely rain-drizzled mist-shrouded postcards you think of when you think of rain, we're talking getting drenched by icy water every time you go out, downpours and muddy lawns and houses getting flooded and chill damp air that gets into the lungs.
People have been lucky--only property losses so far, I believe. But this is getting WAY too old...I like rain, but this is just too much. My S.A.D. is in full swing.

Yikes. I hope you and your family are all safe. The weather has been crazy lately here in New Jersey. Last night we had a thunderstorm. A thunderstorm in January! I thought I was going nuts until my parents told me they heard it also. Today it was 60 degrees. It felt like April not January.

Thanks...Samwise and I are fine. We're lucky. The house we rent is at the top of a mild slope on the road, not at the bottom, and it's set up a few inches--chances are we won't have any problems, but a lot of people are getting flooded now, including apartment complexes (been there, done that before), condos, houses...
The thing I worry about around here is that because around here the trees are so tall, if the ground can't hold onto their root systems, they topple over. And we live surrounded by some *very* tall trees. Again, chances are this will happen more on the sides of slopes rather than in our back yard so I'm not worried for us.
But a lot of people are going to be facing major water damage and man...tell you I've got a major headache from the constant gloom at this point.

I wish we could send some of our rain down to Texas and OK...and have a little of their sunshine. :( I know people down in that area who are facing the opposite problem, but both extremes are dangerous and cause a lot of damage for people.
Big Mama in action...I sure don't blame her--what's to blame with nature? But it isn't all that easy to deal with when you're in the midst of it. It's been a rough season all the way around for a whole lot of people. At least Sam and I are in a house that's in good area not to get flooded. I am grateful for that. But I'm still sooooo sick of the constant rain.

rain in texas is definately needed. We have had a couple showers here in the past two days, but it hasn't lasted for more than 10 minutes. One Tuesday and the other last night.

:hugz: I would gladly take some of that rain off your hands. Being in Colorado, our mountains are getting pounded with snow...but here on the front range, all we get is the wind from those storm fronts, but no moisture...so we are having wildfires and such as well as Texas and Oklahoma. I'll send you some dry weather energy if you'll send some moisture energy our way. :hugz:

Sending you sunshine vibes and many hugs, Yasmine. I like rain too, but I can understand that it would be getting rather frustrating at this point.
I totally understand the weather affecting emotions, too. We've had rain and dreariness here in Wisconsin for weeks. I've been sleeping twice as much and feeling really down... not my usual self, that's for sure. I'm actually missing the snow, because its normally sunny and snowing this time of year.

Oh yes! We would take your soaking rains in a heartbeat - it's so sad to see the scorched earth we have around here. A few people have lost their lives due to the fires, and the livestock are going to suffer greatly later, as their winter food has burned up. :(
As my daughter said, Mother Nature is mad at us right now. Sure hope she calms down SOON. Hugs and energies for all of us, to make it through.

Day 26. Oh, it's more than frustrating for a lot of people--homes have been lost and more will follow with the rising flooding that's happening, highways are closed because of standing water or crumbling pavement because the water's undermining the roads, a sinkhole formed in Seattle today due to the water and a road near Issaquah's cracking because of the unstable land beneath it now, trees are toppling and hitting cars and houses and closing roads, there are places that are looking at evacuation now...it's a soggy mess. For me--it's a headache, for some people who are looking at losing their homes, it's a big hardship.
We actually don't have a lot of sun here, but even a partially overcast dry day can be helpful at times. :) (I think we have 65 days a year that are cloud-free).

Well, here's the bright side:
Unless it's highly acidic rain, you don't have to unlazy yourself to wash the outside of your home or car. You can let nature do it for you. Whoo, free cleaning! Though, you might want to toss a few dollars out the window incase nature gets pissy over not getting a tip.
You're no magical moron. Make it stop. I've had to do it before. Too much rain is simply too much. My mum has severe arthritic problems and I'm not about to let a flood put her in days worth of agony. I'm sure you can stop it as easily as I can if you put your... [thinks witty-like] your broom into it. (Good one, Aidron!)
Worst comes to worst, let nature wash your clothes too. I mean, if you're going to have to put up with this rain, at least get some good out of it.
(Go away, rain!... but don't you dare come here!)

It sounds absolutely horrid. I hope for some relief for all who are being hit with this. Stay safe and dry.
I'd lived in Seattle for some time and the rain and cloudiness is one of the things I remember most about the area, but my gods the scenery is stunning! I think 65 days of sun is being generous, though. :cutie:

Well...on the news...more roads closed, a couple apartment/condo complexes around here facing flooding--the water's starting to lap at their doors and the parking lots are knee deep...a guy in Oregon was watching TV when a mudslide poured into his house through windows, etc....that was a nasty shock.

We've had 12.26 inches of rain in the past 26 days in Seattle, and a lot more in some of the other areas around w. WA. Forecast? More rain coming in, with a few breaks (meaning a few hours or so) on Sunday but another big system coming in the next day. I think the governor just declared disaster areas in about 12 counties.
Okay, we're just all wet. I think I'll get out one of my videos on Hawai'i and and close the curtains and turn on every light in the house and watch it over and over and over again. :eyebrow:

(And Aidron, chickie: re: weather magic...yeah, I'm doing some, but right now I've got several long-term magical projects going and they take priority for me at this time...I've put out a lot of energy on other people the past couple of years...this year, I'm focusing on me. :) )

My Dad lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. They have the rains too. He says it raining so much, he has decided to gather two of every animal and gathering wood to build an arc.
Im just a bit east in British Columbia's interior. We haven't had the 25 days of rain but we have had alot of rain and its way warmer than it should be...there are flowers and shrubs in my yard that think its srping and are comming back way to early. And birds that always go south did not this year! If it gets cold in Feburary, nature is going to have a hard time of it this year.
I told everybody it was going to be warm this year cause the willows were the last to lose leaves this fall, now I wish I had not been right.

I can confirm that we are getting our fair share of rain in Vancouver as well! :uhhuhuh:
Here the record for the most consecutive rainy days dates back to 1953 and we should break it on Monday if the weather does not change this weekend.
Always the odd duck, I must confess that I am actually quite enjoying the rain, especially at night (I love hearing raindrops on my roof and my windows, it lulls me to sleep). And I have been known to go frolic in the rain more than once over the last few days.
My cat, who clearly does not enjoy the weather as much as I do, is thinking of having me committed, I can see it in her eyes!
Things do not sound as bad as in Seattle flood-wise, though. I read in the papers that Seattle was getting even more rain than we are, but I did not realise it was that serious. There is an evacuation plan ready to be activated in North Vancouver if need be but so far no one had to leave their homes.
The people affected by the floods and slides in WA are in my thoughts :hugz:

Oh Yaz... I wish the extra could come here... we are in a drought again and breathing brown air because nothing can wash the dust and fumes out of the air. I live a bit higher up and it isn't quite as bad as in the valley/Phoenix AZ. But by golly we have sunshine each and every day.
GaiasGypsy I used to live in Wisconsin and would spend each sunny day outside if it was 30 degrees or above. We would "sunbath" on south hillsides out of the wind and have picnics. *Chuckles* We still talk about that.
I'll wish you some of our sun and ask for your rain... we'll see if it all balances out then. :)

Send some of that rain down here to Texas. We're in the middle of one of the biggest draughts the state has ever had, grass fires are running amok and it's no good.

Another Vancouverite... well, just outside Vancouver, actually. We're heading to break our record, too, though the rain hasn't been *straight*, thankfully. It's more like, we've had rain at some point every day. (Though today's actually pretty bright, so unless it turns crazy and rains tonight, we'll only have hit... 26 days? 27? I've lost count.)

Like I said, we just got a storm in from the Northpacific coast and right now it is just snowing and snowing. Sighs so lovely to look at and a misery to deal with when you drive etc.

Well, after 27 straight days of rain, we had one dry day. Now we're back to heavy rain and looking at more flooding. Entire western WA is under floodwatch/warnings. At least twelve counties are looking at major financial losses due to the rain. Oregon's sliding into the mud, too.
