Traditional Soap
*this soap recipe is made with lye
do NOT use aluminum or tin utensils for soap making
use ONLY glass, earthenware, enamel or stainless steel (I like glass!)

You will need: wooden stir spoon small bowl for lye solution (glass)
large bowl for soap making (glass) measuring spoons
measuring cups rubber gloves rubber spatula
soap moulds (available at most larger craft stores.)
if soap moulds are not attainable for you - you can use
a glass 8X8 baking pan
Materials soft water lye flakes clean tallow melted petroleum jelly
any kind of essential oils to scent the soap (optional)
Be in a well ventilated area - lye has a way of catching in your throat.
Let's do it! Measure one half cup soft water, put on your rubber gloves and measure
2 tablespoons dry flaked lye. Stir constantly with your wooden spoon until your
lye is dissolved. Don't be alarmed if you see steam - lye causes the water to quickly
heat until it steams.
In another container measure on cup melted tallow (beef fat) which has been cleaned and
strained. Set aside both the tallow and the lye/water mixture to cool to lukewarm.
You can test the temperatures by feeling the OUTSIDE of the containers the mixtures
are in - DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS IN THE MIXTURES.
While you are waiting for the solutions to cool - liberally grease your soap moulds with
Petroleum jelly.
Your solutions should be lukewarm by now, pour the lye slowly into the tallow mixture,
stirring constantly. When the lie mixes with the fat - saponification occurs -meaning
basically - you made soap!
Stir until you are confident the lye has been completely absorbed into the fat.
While stirring , Your mixture will become cloudy, then grainy, and as it approaches
the right consistency for pouring into your moulds, it will become think like pudding
or honey. The amount of stirring depends on the temperature of the solutions
when you started - the warmer the solution - the longer you stir.
it can be as little as five minutes - to one hour - if you had the patience to wait until
the solution was lukewarm - it will take around 10-15 minutes.
This is the critical stage of soap - you must stir until ALL the lye solution is
well mixed with the fat solution - or you will wind up with soap with lye chunks in it
and it would be far too caustic to the skin.
If you are adding any kind of scent - now is the time to add it.
Good oils to add for beginning soap making are:
Rose Oil Clove Oil Patchouli Oil Rosemary Oil Sandalwood Oil Eucalyptus Oil
When you mixture is thickened and all the lye mixed - it's time to pour into your moulds.
Pour the soap into your greased moulds and then pick up the mould and set it down
sharp enough to force air bubbles up to the surface - but not so hard you knock soap
out.
Put your mould up in a cool dry place where it won't be disturbed by light or movement
for about an hour to two hours. When it's the consistency of butter - take a sharp knife
and cut it into bars (if you didn't use moulds). If you wait until the soap is too hard - it won't
cut cleanly.
Avoid touching the soap until it's set (about 24 hours) because the alkali is active and
caustic until your soap is "set".
after 24 hours, the bars should be hard and easily removed from the moulds.
Stack your bars this way
1
2 3
4 5 6

with spaces in between for good air flow.
Let them sit for 2-3 weeks for a good cured soap. There may be a bit of shrinkage
but the longer it cures - the better it is!
After 3 or 4 weeks in open air - wrap in paper until ready to use!

Note - wash your soap making materials as soon as possible to remove
all lye and soap residue - and NEVER use them for preparing food.
Once you make soap - those are soap making tools ONLY!

Cinnamon Soap
Another Lye Soap -
You will need 7 cups clean tallow 2 cups vegetable oil 3 1/2 cups soft water
1 cup plus 2 tbsp. lye flakes 1 tsp. oil of cinnamon
1/4 tsp. each oil of cloves and oil of caraway
1/2 tsp. each oil of sassafras and bergamot
measure and blend all the essential oils. Melt tallow and vegetable oil. set aside to cool.
Stir lye flakes into cool water until dissolved - set aside to cool as well.
Grease your moulds.
When lye and fat are lukewarm, stir lye into fat until mixture is creamy and thick.
add essential oils - stir well to disperse evenly.
Pour into moulds,
Approximate yield: 13 cups liquid soap or 6lbs hard bar soap

Easy Soap Circles
Easy soap is made by melting pure castile soap - it's made of oil not tallow
usually coconut sometimes vegetable or olive. (these last two make BAD soap).
there are many varieties out there. It's a bit softer than traditional soap but just as good!
If you are lucky enough to live near a "dollar" store - you can usually find it there
3 or 4 bars for a dollar.
To make easy soap you will need
castile soap heatproof non metallic container (ceramic or glass bowl works fine)
essential oils cheesecloth string for tying water
Cut up your soap in to small chunks
heat about 1/3 cup water until boiling.
Pour water over your cut up soap and let it site until it's cool enough
to touch.
Using a wooden spoon (or your hands if it's cool enough) mix
the soap chips and then let it sit until it's good and melted down.
Add any essential oils - scent should be strong -add oils till it is.
just add till you get a good strong smell.
The soap should be ready to shape at this point -
scoop out a handful of your soap - and shape into a ball with your hands.
place each rounded soap ball into a square of cheese cloth -
gather up the ends and twist them tightly around the soap
this helps it hold it's shape while drying.
tie off each bundle with the string. Put them up in a cool dark place for 4-5 days.
then you can re-wrap them in nice papers or fabrics until ready to use.

What do parts mean?

I interpret them as being equal measuring units. So if you're using cups, one cup of this, two cups of that. Or tablespoons. Etc.

Some of these sound like they are coming from Scott Cunningham's book. Are they?

I used the bath salt recipe from that book, added some white cherry blossom fragrance, and voila! It's awesome. ^_^

Also, I didn't have any oils at the time, so I used body spray. It worked pretty well. I would use body sprays for bigger batches and oils for smaller ones.
