View Full Version : On Discordians & Subgenii: An explanation.
Little Billy
January 15th, 2006, 03:13 AM
"I don't practice what I preach, because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."
- J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, at a sales seminar in 1953.
Much has been said on this forum about the disruptiveness of Discordians and/or Subgenii. They derail threads. They don't take anything seriously. They are dangerously inconsistent, politically, and won't agree with either "side". They don't show respect in the same manner everyone else does. They won't spell magic with a K on the end. They are, in short, a bad influence.
This being said, perhaps an explanation is in order.
Fact is, we're just as "pagan" as anyone else. We certainly aren't Christians, at least not on any recognizable level. We have our own holy days (though we can never agree on which days they are), our own traditions (though we can't agree on those either), and our own holy men/prophets/messiahs (though we never listen to them).
Discordians worship chaos, but - naturally - cannot agree on what chaos is. Subgenii worship slack, which is a whole different ball of wax. We both agree on the MEANS, but not the ENDS. Now, if you realize that chaos isn't all fluffy bunnies and dadaism, you can see why Discordians are a disruptive bunch. It's not that they want to, it's that they have no choice. Both Discordians and Subgenii are BORN wrong...we are congenital troublemakers, and frankly can't see what all the fuss is about.
For example, thread drift. It happens, no matter what. We just don't see the need to fight the inevitable. When a thread starts to drift, it is because everything that CAN be said on the subject HAS been said on the subject. We just come along and recycle things...let the conversation follow its own course, just to see where it takes you. It might be "disruptive", but it sure beats having a thread where the same old crap has been rehashed from page 6 to page 27.
We also have a bad habit of saying what's on our mind. This tends to piss people off to no end, because of our aforementioned lack of ossified opinions.
For example, the political forum. We have left wingers running around that refuse to be proper little gun-grabbing dems. This tends to irritate the hell out of BOTH sides, because we all know that the left and the right should stick to the Proper Opinions(tm). You can't mix ideology, you fool! It will asplode!
However, I cannot name a single religion or religious movement that I would care to belong to that didn't have room for this tomfoolery. What the hell is the point of having everyone being so serious, all the time? It's only the internets, after all...nothing has ever been solved on the internet, and nobody has ever changed their minds. Any religious movement worthy of the name should have room for a pack of class clowns running around, if only to remind them that life was never meant to be serious.
What's that, you say? You feel offended because one of these seedy jerks came along and made a post that just might be poking fun at Wiccans, or Satanists, or Norse Pantheon worshippers?
Well, allow me to let you in on a couple of secrets:
1. We treat each other far more harshly. Go to PD.com or POEE, or EB&G, and look at the hideous ways in which we are insensitive about each other's insensitivity.
2. If it bothers you that much, perhaps you need to re-examine your beliefs? Is there some lingering doubts that are irritated by this sort of clowning? Probably, even if you won't admit it, even to yourself.
Lastly, we are the last, best defense against dogmatism. We never saw a "law" we didn't want to bend, or a rede written in stone that we didn't want to stencil a Dobbshead over. Nothing amuses us more than the ire of a poked "authority"...well, except for Emo Phillips. I love that guy.
Oh, and if anyone tosses you a golden apple, throw it out the window, as quick as you can. If you believe nothing else I have said, believe that.
Or kill me.

I'm glad the Discordians are here. I was wary at first because it seemed as though there were intentional plans to disrupt this place. And there were, but not in a bad way. I love what you guys are doing. And based on my own actions sometimes and my life in general, I think I might even be a Discordian. Though I don't like labels so I won't bother to find out.

Look. I don't give a flying fig what your beliefs are or why you think those beliefs allow you to act in a way that is at best annoying and at worse offensive.
I'm just sick of it. Every time I come to MW there's a new issue with you and a select group of Discordians. So you worship chaos, big fuging deal. Give it a rest already.
It is possible, ya know, to destroy illusions and complacencies without being complete douchebags.
And frankly your strawman fallacies are pissing me off. They won't spell magic with a K on the end. They are, in short, a bad influenceWe also have a bad habit of saying what's on our mind. Wow. Way to sound self important.
I agree with semicivilizedman. Complacency sucks. And few people are better at destroying complacency than discordians. But you (and a few of your fellow discordians) make a habit of taking the focus off the complacency and putting it on yourselves.
So, you worship choas, big freaking whoop. Try talking about the issues rather than crying persecution. "Oh, the MAN is against us because we say what HE doesn't like. If you don't like us, you must be the MAN too!"

um, yeah I was wary at first, too, like semicivilizedman... and at first when one of my folders disappeared, I was sure that it must have been a band of chaos monkeys... but then someone finally set me straight, telling me simply that I was letting the discord in... and of course, I found my silly folder somewhere else... somewhere I probably accidentally put it myself
:hahugh: And it's true, ya know? They can't hurt you unless you let them... perhaps we should be thanking them?
Maybe we weren't as peaceful/peaceable as we thought we were?
Our first reaction to the chaos was to be disgruntled about it (or at least, I know mine was...) and that's the beautiful irony of it all.
To maintain a harmonious outlook amidst a board of respectful, orderly members is no great feat... but maintaining that outlook amid the chaos, now that is an act of higher consciousness!

Whoa Nelly!
Look. I don't give a flying fig what your beliefs are or why you think those beliefs allow you to act in a way that is at best annoying and at worse offensive.
I find them funny, personally. And I know I'm not the only one.
I'm just sick of it. Every time I come to MW there's a new issue with you and a select group of Discordians. So you worship chaos, big fuging deal. Give it a rest already.
So Wiccans worship a God and Goddess, big fuging deal. Give it a rest already.
Notice the problem?
A person's religion shapes who they are. In a multifaith forum like this one, it should be discussed thoroughly. Even if your religion focuses ont he worship of Shinai, the Laughing Goat God of Mirth and Satire. (Love you, Shinai!)
It is possible, ya know, to destroy illusions and complacencies without being complete douchebags.
I didn't read everything these guys wrote, so I'm afraid I missed whatever statements you're referring to. Could you give me some links, please?
I have a feeling that some people may be interpreting every form of confrontation as an act of aggression, which it isn't. I've seen it happen before these guys even showed up, sometimes in discussions that even involved mods.
You seem to say this is a Discordian problem - I say it's a semantic problem. One person's friendly discussion is another person's flame. I don't get involved in discussions where I think I may walk that line (being a fairly blunt person overall), but some of these guys are fine with taking that risk. And that's just how it rolls. If you think they went too far, as has been said many times as of late, there's always the Report button.
A peaceful solution would take work on both sides (some grow thicker skins while others develop some tact) but not everyone's going to cooperate with that. So just enjoy the ride, whydontcha? A little bit of frustration never killed anyone.
I agree with semicivilizedman. Complacency sucks. And few people are better at destroying complacency than discordians. But you (and a few of your fellow discordians) make a habit of taking the focus off the complacency and putting it on yourselves.
Y'mean they're trying to get everyone's attention? I thought that's what everyone did when they posted. I'm not going to post if I think no one's going to pay attention to what I say. If I had a specific religion, I'd probably be trying to make people pay attention to that as well, as I would find it to be very neat and worthy of discussion. Don't you feel so inclined every now and again?

1. So you worship (insert diety of your choice). Give it a rest, already.
2. No, it isn't, really. Believe me, I've tried.
3. Sorry about that.
4. You'll never get anywhere, with a shrunken, atrophied ego. Ya gotta look in the mirror in the morning, and KNOW you have no flaws that matter. I, for example, am blessed with stunning good looks, and biceps that could crush an anvil. Woot!

Take a look in the Political Pagan subforum. Look for threads by Little Billy and myself. We have posted a lot of links that cleared up misconceptions or at least showed there was more than one side to it. My first suggestion would be the thread on spying, I forget the name of the thread. If letting a group of people know that a reporter had not violated anyone's rights or anyone's privacy, as had been implied, but in fact had helped to bring pedophiles to justice and had also got a kid off drugs and into college, if posting that link was me putting the focus on myself, then guilty as charged.

Noooo... I was never a member of the Church, but I follow the Discordian creed as much as ever. There are differences in the philosophies, though most people only see the broad similarities.
This is the way it SHOULD be. The trick to survival, especially in these dark days, is to blend in.
IRL, I look like a typical blue collar, cowboy type. When things go all weird, they're usually looking at the dude with blue hair and the pierced cranium.
And if I can shove the blame for some of my pranks on the Discordians, well, that's what they get for slowing down.

will you read me some more poetry little billy?
Sure. More public domain poetry from a man who was considerate enough to die several decades ago:
Nightmare, With Angels
by Stephen Vincent Benet
An angel came to me and stood by my bedside,
Remarking in a professorial-historical-economic and irritated
voice,
"If the Romans had only invented a decent explosion-engine!
Not even the best, not even a Ford V-8
But, say, a Model T or even an early Napier,
They'd have built good enough roads for it (they knew how
to build roads)
From Cape Wrath to Cape St. Vincent, Susa, Babylon and
Moscow,
And the motorized legions never would have fallen,
And peace, in the shape of a giant eagle, would brood over
the entire Western World!"
He changed his expression, looking now like a combination of
Gilbert Murray, Hilaire Belloc and a dozen other scientists,
writes, and prophets,
And continued, in angelic tones,
"If the Greeks had known how to cooperate, if there'd never
been a Reformation,
If Sparta had not been Sparta, and the Church had been the
Church of the saints,
The Argive peace like a free-blooming olive-tree, the peace of
Christ (who loved peace) like a great, beautiful vine en-
wrapping the spinning earth!
Take it nearer home," he said.
"Take these Mayans and their star-clocks, their carvings and
their great cities.
Who sacked them out of their cities, drowned the cities with
a green jungle?
A plague? A change of climate? A queer migration?
Certainly they were skillful, certainly they created.
And, in Tenochtitlan, the dark obsidian knife and the smoking
heart on the stone but a fair city,
And the Incas had it worked out beautifully till Pizarro
smashed them.
The collectivist state was there, and the ladies very agreeable.
They lacked steel, alphabet and gunpowder and they had to
get married when the government said so.
They also lacked unemployment and overproduction.
For that matter," he said, 'that the Cro-Magnons,
The fellows with the big skulls, the handsome folk, the excel-
lent scribers of mammoths,
Physical gods and yet with the sensitive grain (they drew the
fine, running reindeer).
What stopped them? What kept us all from being Apollos and
Aphrodites
Only with a new taste to the nectar,
The laughing gods, not the cruel, the gods of song, not of war?
Supposing Aurelius, Confucius, Napoleon, Plato, Gautama,
Alexander--
Just to take half a dozen--
Had ever realized and stabilized the full dream?
How long, O Lord God in the highest? How long, what now,
perturbed spirit?"
He turned blue at the wingtips and disappeared as another
angel approached me.
This one was quietly but appropriately dressed in cellophane,
synthetic rubber and stainless steel.
But his mask was the blind mask of Ares, snouted for gas-masks.
He was neither soldier, sailor, farmer, dictator nor munitions-
manufacturer.
Nor did he have much conversation, except to say,
"You will not be saved by General Motors or the pre-fabricated
house.
You will not be saved by dialectic materialism or the Lambeth
Conference
You will not be saved by Vitamin D or the expanding universe.
In fact, you will not be saved."
Then he showed his hand:
In his hand was a woven, wire basket, full of seeds, small
metallic and shining like the seeds of portulaca;
Where he sowed them, the green vine withered, and the smoke
and the armies sprang up.

Invictus-William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
for my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody,but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Cruisin' Mos Espa
In my Delorean
War's over
I'm a peacetime mandalorian
My story has stumped
Star Wars historians
Deep in debate,
Buffet plate at Bennigan's
Rhyme renegade
Sure to penetrate
First and second offense
I won't hesitate
Got a job to do
And Darth's the guy that delegates
Got something against Skywalker
Someone he really hates
I don't give a ****
I'm after Solo
For all I care
He could be hidin' at Yoda's dojo
Gotta make the money
Credit's no good
When the jawas run the shop
In your neighborhood
Think you can cook
I got a grappling hook
Let's make this quick
'Cause I'm really booked
I'm a devious degenerate
Defender of the devil
Shut down all the trash compactors
On the detention level
chorus
My backpack's got jets
Well I'm Boba the Fett
Well I bounty hunt for Jaba Hutt
To finance my 'Vette
wicky wicky woo
Well I chill in deep space
A mask is over my face
Well I deliver the prize
But I still narrow my eyes
'Cause my time
I don't like to waste.
Get down
I'm a question
Wrapped inside an enigma
Get inside the slave one
Find your homing signal
From Endor to Hoth
Ripley to Spock
I'll find what you want
But there's gonna be a cost
See, my name is Boba Fett
I know my **** is tight
Start not actin'right
You're frozen in carbonite
Got telescopic sight
Flame throwers on my wrist
You still don't get the gist
Spiked boots are made to kick
Targets are made to hit
You think I give a ****
Yo mama is a bitch
I see you in the Sarlaac Pit
You just flipped my switch
Integrity been dissed
You scratchin' on my itch
You know I shoot the gift
Got bambinas at cantinas
Waitin' to lick my lusty lips
So I'll let you get back inside
Your little space ship
Give you a head start
'Cause I'm the sportin' kind
Consider the starting line
The sneaky smile I hide inside
Hope you have hyper drive (drive)
pray to stay alive ('live)
Don't try to slip me a five
'Cause I never take a bribe
To the beat of a different drummer
Bad ass bounty hunter
Let no man put asunder
Or else they be put under
As in six feet
Got an imperial fleet
Backin' me up, gonna blow up
Any attempt to defeat
They gotta death star
Got four payments on my car
Hand it over to hammer head
At Mos Eisley bar
He used to carjack
Now he's a barback
Just goes to show how you can
Get back on the right track
As for me that's not an option
Can't say that with more clarity
Me going legit would be like
Jar Jar on speech therapy
Chorus
My backpack's got jets
Well I'm Boba the Fett
Well I bounty hunt for Jaba Hutt
To finance my 'Vette
wicky wicky woo
Well I chill in deep space
A mask is over my face
Well I deliver the prize
But I still narrow my eyes
'Cause my time
I don't like to waste.
Slice you open like a Taun Taun
Faster than the Autobahn
Or a motorbike in Tron
Do the deed and then I'm gone
Jaba has a hissyfit
Contact Calrissian
Over a colt, the plan unfolds
No politic is legit
Back in the day
When I was a slave
Living life in the fast lane
Like in a pod race
My mean streak tweaked
I became a basket case
So this space ace
Split that place, poste haste
Took up a noble cause
Called the Clone Wars
'Cause life's not all about
Girls and cars
Getting ****ed up
In ****ed up bars
See, I'm not a retard
Or gay like de Barge
I'm large and in charge
With a face so scarred
A cold black heart
That's been torn apart
The Sith wish that they
Had a dick so hard
'Cause it's long long ago
In a pussy far far
Call me master, 'cause I'm faster
Than Pryor on fire
I no longer have to hot wire
I'm a hunter for hire
With no plans to retire
And all the sucka MC's
Can call me sire
Chorus
My backpack's got jets! (jets jets jets)
I'm Boba the Fett! (the Fett the Fett)
Well I bounty hunt for Jaba Hutt, (Jaba Hutt Jaba Hutt Jaba Hutt)
...To finance my 'Vette (my 'Vette my 'Vette my 'Vette my 'Vette

Or kill me.
This is weird. This is the first time I read about Discordians with the Subgenius. I thought the SubGenius were simply a Discordian group.

$30 membership. Also, Subgenii seek Ultimate Slack, and tend to be bigger assholes. There's some stuff about Yeti's, alien abduction, The Conspiracy and the end of the world too. But both are religions for "mutants, blasphemers, disbelievers, rebels, outcasts, hackers, freethinkers" and parody other religions to a degree. One of the founders of Discordianism was also involved the Church of the Subgenius, I believe. Its more a difference in aims, though they converge in places and a similarity in tactics.

all good.
I think I'll save my money. Since the Discordians have already given me free certifications and ordinations. I like this, especially after years of giving money to my coven members who did (in the end) absolutely nothing with it.
As for Yetis, have any of you even seen one? I was in Shigatse (in occupied Tibet) back in '99 and my group was awoken by a strange bellowing and when I looked out beyond the town I saw a strange animal. The locals assured me it was a Yeti. But they were unfazed. I guess the locals don't think such things are that strange.

Knowing Tibetan culture, I can assure you that the Subgenii could not be descended from Yeti. If they were then that would make them pink, at least according to Himalayan legend.
Shigatse actually sucked, as did most of the T.A.R. The only fun was when I visited the ruins (or resurrrected temple) of Ganden. I got fined for giving a book to a local women. The Chinese in Tibet really suck ass. (It was more of a bribe.) I hated most of my stay there....Lhasa, Shigatse, and the north really was miserable. It was like being invited to a concentration camp but all the victims had to perform for you.
Since then I have never gone back to anything even resembling China, since I think they suck ass for what they have done to an entire nation.
Sorry for the memory trip.

WHo you gonna believe? "Bob", or some stinky old monks?
I'll take the stinky old monks at their word. Bob just looks too clean cut to trust, especially with that look in his eye.

Yeah, but can you trust her?
I can. She lost all her teeth years ago in a climbing accident. My uncle came home drunk once and forgot her at the bar. She was able to somehow climb up to the second floor balcony and over the railing before she decided to take a nice jump. This has never been lived down.
If that doesn't say "trust worthy," what does?

I just was thinking of my last trip to Phoenix. Between the old fars in their golf carts and the ones in their cars, it was frightening. Some of them seemed to bot have a clue what those little white and yellow lines on the road meant. It was kinda scary and I don't scare easily.

The only Subgenius I've ever known (that I'm aware of) was a minister - of course. There was a rock show at the college, and bunches of us were goofing around, slam-dancing (what the kids nowadays call "moshing" - heh) and the minister's shoulder accidentally banged my nose hard enough that now, nearly 20 years later, it still has a weird dent in it.
Reading through this great thread, I now see exactly how appropriate a memory that is regarding a Man of The Slack.

They seem to come off very pretensiously, especially to Wiccans. I know Wiccans have sometimes set themselves up for it, but the OTO and Thelema have some sort of grudge, it seems, with people having a bit of fun in rituals.
