I found it fascinating to learn that Gardner was a Freemason. After communicating around the various pages and rooms, I discovered a few Pagans who were or had been involved in different organizations. Now I'm REALLY curious..
How many of us belong to orders such as Masons, Elks, Moose, Eagles, Odd Fellows, Eastern Star, Doe's, Rainbow for Girls, Job's Daughters, Scouts, etc.? Could be some interesting stories.
For that matter, are any of us involved in service clubs or other groups like Lions, Rotary, Soroptomists, etc.?
At least one inquiring mind wants to know.

Hi SeekerSandy, I have to say, living in England, most of your societies are unfamiliar to me, so other than saying I belong to the Pagan Federation, I can't contribute much to this question. However, I think perhaps I should point out that Gerald wasn't actually a Freemason! He was not above telling the odd "porky pie", of which being a Freemason, was one of them, along with the fact that he was a Ph.D and D.Litt, when in reality he never attended University. Still, that doesn't make him a bad man!!! :bigredgri

Actually, Silverwitch, much of what I have seen or read of the Gardnerian "tradition" appears very much Masonic influenced. Although he was a notorious BS artist, among other traits, there seems to be some sort of documentation or witnessing that he was indeed a Master Mason. If not, he certainly studied and patterned his ritual along the same lines of reasoning.

I was an active Girl Scout from 4th Grade on up through my Freshman year at college. Does that count? LOL! Too, it's well noted in the history of my Trad that the person who made the move to send "us" to the States was a Co-Mason ~ some of that, but not much, is reflected in a bit of our ritual materials.

but Masons and Eastern Stars run in my family. The most recent was my Great-grandma, Great-Grandpa and my Grandma. Great-Grandma and Grandma were Eastern Stars. But they left the organization very very suddenly, and refuse to talk about it now. My grandma is the only one living though. I tried asking her about it..but she changes the subject real fast. No one knows why they just up and left all of a sudden. *shrugs*

I never went to college or did the whole group thing. I was in Girl Scouts but I've always been quite anti-social so I was always off in a corner somewhere. Doing what you ask ???? HAHA I'll Never tell.

I was a Sea Cadet for 7 years and then when I aged out I became a member of the CIC (Cadet Instructors Cadre), a part of the Canadian Military. So now I'm an Officer and teach the Cadets.

I was a Girl Scout. As a teen, I was in the Civil Air Patrol (it wasn't what i thought it was...I never got to fly a bomber over my high school...hehehe). I was an officer in a local Democrat club, I was a union steward for a while, & I was on the Affirmative Action Committee at work, & I belong to the block watch.
I also belong to one of those "We Jews are Taking Over the World" committees you hear about.:rotfl:

Well..I was a girlscout in elementary school..and that's about it.
However, such society memberships run in my family, as well. A couple of family members were freemasons. The most notable of which, was William Beckerle, who was a freemason for 55 years, and was even given a freemason burial.
My father is a member of the Mooselodge, and whenever I visit my parents in CT, he either plans to take me to dinner at the club, or takes me and my husband out for drinks at the club. Now..I've got to say..from the sounds of it, the Mooselodge does a whole lot of good for the charitable organizations..however...it bothers me that they don't have a secret moose salute (heheheh). For Christmas this year, one of the things my mom got my dad, was this little toy moose that poops chocolate jelly beans, as a joke.
Anyway..regarding freemasonry..i've always been fascinated with it. However, I don't think I would ever join eastern star, or what have you. It's not that I have a problem with their beliefs or practices (at least, those of which I've READ), I'm just not very much into the whole secret society thing, myself.
I did go to a Rainbow Girls function once, I think it was an initiation ceremony...for my friend in Junior High. They had to march around the points of a five pointed star, carrying candles, dressed in white, reciting "faith hope and charity, but the greatest of these is charity". Or something like that. Anyway..that kinda creeped me out at that point in my life. So...despite the fact that she kept trying to get me to join, I never did.
I also had a friend who was a De Molay, around the same time. Is a sword a STANDARD part of their uniform? He always wore one at the ceremonies (he would often leave to go to his ceremony's from my house, or come over after attending their meetings/ceremonies).

There is a thread in the History forum about the Templars and the Masons. Mol was in one of the youth orders, that I know. My brotherhood in college (DX) takes a lot of its roots from the Knights Templar, as does the Conspiracy which I joined in my later years.

Do the Eastern Stars accept Pagans? I checked out their website and it seems to go either way... Does anyone know?
