I hear this question alot. To answer your question, your accurate, exact time of birth is needed. And of course the correct city of your birth.
These two things will allow an astrologer to cast your natal chart and interperate . Or you can look it up yourself, Widget's World (http://www.widgetsworld.com) for free. While free, they do not explain anything, just houses and signs are given. You'd then have to look up what everything means.
I reccomend using Ronald C. Davidson's Astrology: The Classic Guide to Understanding Your Horoscope. It's very comprehensive and easy to use. I use several books, including this one, to get a more rounded picture of the chart I am looking up, each time.
Good luck to you!

PS: The other thing I tend to hear over and over again: "I'm born on the cusp so I am both a Gemini and a Cancer." (ex born on June 22) Mathmatically, you can be only have one sun sign. Like pregnant or not pregnant, there is no middle ground, no half-n-half sun signs. It's math. One sun sign per person. However, you are more than your sun sign. There are several other planetary influences, houses those influences are expressed in, etc... (ie: Mercury in Aries, in the 4th house, Mercury sextile Jupiter) You are so much more than just your sun sign. And knowing your chart, helps you to know yourself.
Having your accurate birthtime and location allows you, or an astrologer to look up and explain your chart in detail.

Knowing your birthplace (Cityville, State or whatever) and what time you were born (1:21 a.m.), you can get your natal chart done. You can do it at astro.com if you wish. If you read the Personal Portrait, it'll tell you what signs each of your planets are in, and it'll give you a list of aspects. These things determine your whole personality, not just where your Sun is.
