Bide the Wiccan laws ye must, in perfect love in perfect trust.
Ye must live and let live, fairly take and fairly give.
Cast the circle thrice about, to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be spoken in rhyme.
Soft of eye and light of touch, speak ye little and listen much.
Deosil go by waxing moon, chanting out the Wiccan runes.
Widdershins go by waning moon, chanting out the baneful tune.
When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to her times two.
When the moon rides at her peak, then the heart's desire seek.
Heed the North wind's mighty gale: lock the door and trim the sail.
When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss the on the mouth.
When the Moor wind blows from the West, departed spirits have no rest.
When the wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.
Nine woods in the cauldron go, burn them quick and burn them slow.
Elder be the Lady's tree, burn it not or cursed ye'll be.
When the wheel begins to turn, let the Beltane fires burn.
When the wheel has turned to Yule, light the log and the Horned One rules.
Hede ye flower, bush and tree, by the Lady, Blessed Be.
Where the rippling waters go, cast a stone, the truth to know.
When ye have and hold a need, hearken not to others' greed.
With a fool no seasons spend, or be counted as his friend.
Merry meet and merry part, bright the cheeks and warm the heart.
Mind the Threefold Law ye should, three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow, where the blue star on thy brow.
True in love ye must ever be, lest thy love be false to thee.
These words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: An ye harm none, do what ye will.

Hm, I don't follow the Rede because I'm not Wiccan.

What do you think about it? Do you take it as whole as an absolute rule, some of it, or any of it as advice?

I myself like to use it as a guideline through everyday life. Some people just use it during spellcraft though.

But I do not follow it religously. Like the bible, it is has good points and it pretty sums up in one sentence what the bible took a whole book to write. An ye harm none, do what ye will. This is what I follow.

Wicca doesn't have a bible. I like that. We have a few pieces of lovely poetry that attempt to give some form of religious doctrine to the faith. Some people believe they should be adhered to completely, others see it as a jumping point, others as just as fluff. Then there are still yet people like me that say "hmm, thats similar to my way of life.. neat" and continue to live as they always have, knowing theres a shnifty piece of poetry out there to give others as a reference when others inquire.

Not wiccan so its not mine but as I do with all religious texts I wrote it down (earlier when I was studying it), but damn it was refreshing to only have to write a few dozen lines instead of a few hundred dozen per chapter... I should have combined christianity jewdism and islam into one peice, it would have saved some cramping... lol I personally like Tao better than the Rede, it was alot more fun to study (as a text not as a religion).

A thought on the original post: the Rede itself is only the phrase "An' it harm none, do as ye will." The "long version", as I've often heard it called, is The Rede of the Wiccae, generally attributed to Lady Gwen Thompson.
This poem contains lots of interesting thoughts on the practice of Wicca itself, but the whole length cannot be considered the Rede, IMO.

Does anyone know where the short version of the Rede comes from? Did Gardener invent it, or was it invented prior (or after!) his time?
