So we rented a cabin this weekend, and it was awesome, except for the current occupant(S). It took alot to get over my fear of spiders. Where are you guys at on this one? We took the little guy outside (brown recluse), but I'm still alittle freaked about it. I just can't kill them because they can kill me. To me that's like the fear that inspired witch burners. We did name him/her though. billiebob

And the cabin and the lake were great so we want to go back again. is there a spider god/goddess we can hook up with? or a way to despider our place when we go back?

I have to kill them. I made an agreement with God....if you want them to die, send them to me, and I'll send them to you.

I usually don't kill them unless it's by accident, but then again I'm so weak-hearted I go out of my way not to step on ants, unless I'm in a bad mood.

There's always Arachne:

Arachne: Greek Spider Goddess. A Lydian girl skilled in weaving, she dared to challenge Athene to compete with her. The contest was held, and Arachne's work was faultless: impudently, it portrayed some of the Gods' less reputable deeds, including Athene's father Zeus abducting Europa. Furious, Athene turned her into a spider, doomed eternally to spin thread drawn from her own body.http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/amethystbt/goddesses.html

I hate spiders. I am terribly arachnophobic...which is even weirder because I like photographing poisonous snakes in the wild. =P I can't kill 'em, though...because, well...I just can't.

Unless they bite me...then it is on.

I have no problem with spiders. There are no poisonous ones where I live. I actually hate bugs a lot more.

Yea, I'm there with you too. I'm not thinking they had a choice in their incarnation. And if they did? They're powerful. But do we kill 'em cause we're scared?

I'm tryna just get cool with 'em. They do weave and all that....

Nope. Well, all spiders have venom, but most are not toxic to humans and the ones that are...they don't have teeth strong enough to go through our skin.

well.. the black widow and brown recluse both can hurt ya..

but I like spiders.. in our home I am the offical spider remover.. and I just pick them up in my hand.. lol.. I like to play with them.. funny thing is I have never been bitten by one that way.. I was bitten in my sleep though by a brown recluse... left a nasty bite on my leg that I had problems with for months.

It's simple: spiders inside the house die. Spiders outside the house can live if they don't get in my way. Sam takes care of them if they're above waist level (I'm too afraid they'll fall on me and have hurt myself before trying to take them out and jumping when they dropped).

I'm arachnophobic and while I know that yes, they're good little buggers, I hate the freakin' things. Although--in a weird twist--I like watching documentaries on them, as long as they don't show them too close up or as long as I don't see somebody holding one (then I really get the shakes). Grew up around black widows and had a couple really traumatic incidents that I just can't shake.

And Mol, I love snakes--hate spiders, love snakes. One of my tattoos is a green boa wrapped around my arm. A friend suggested I get a spider tattoo "to help you get over the phobia"....uh...I told her where she could take that tattoo and stick it.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that a building is a habitat, and removing a creature from its habitat can kill it just as easily as stepping on it. House fauna has evolved to be just that, adapting for the climate and lack of water. Personally, I love spiders, but I've killed the brown recluses I've found. Luckily the area I live now doesn't have any, and I've never encountered a black widow. Brown recluses seem to give all spiders a bad reputation, because I think they're the most commonly mis-identified. Or rather, more spiders are mis-identified as brown recluses than pretty much anything else. In fact I read once that the areas with the highest number of recluses reported are ones outside their actual range... (this article (http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol5num2/special/recluse.html) includes a map, for anyone interested)

Well.. I usually leave them in the house.. but they come in the front door or on firewood.. and hubby can't stand them.. so me taking them right back out the front door isn't gonna kill them (and besides with as dry as it is here.. they are more likely to get wet in the house!) I do have one that lives on the window sill of my kitchen sink though.. he seems happy there.

In our area, we have hobo spiders, which are often misidentified as brown recluses, but which have a similar venom that causes necrotic bites just about as bad. Black widows are on the other side of the mountain, and wolf spiders do have a venom which can cause serious problems for sensitive people (my sister, who's a nurse, has a coworker who got bitten by a wolf spider and two weeks later, the wound still won't heal over).

I'm just grateful I don't live in Australia...sounds like a beautiful country and a wild one (in a good way), but dang, there are a lot of poisonous critters down there!

I'm the same way! I don't 'like' spiders, but I don't dislike them either - I just put them outside when they're in my way (like the bathtub  ) I know what you mean about the ants though - I feel terrible if I've stepped on one!

Serqet is an egyptian scorpion goddess. scorpions are atleast related to spiders.. but mainly, she's related to all poisonous stuffs. so if you get bitten she'd be good to talk to. and she's really awesome to boot

So you're going to worship a god of spiders as a form of bug control?

Just wanted to verify.

But yeah, Anansi.

There's always Grandmother Spider. She's the Native American goddess who stole the sun so that the people could have light and warmth. She was so small when in spider form that no one noticed when she spun her web to where the sun was. Then she captured it in her big gourd and brought it back.

Personally, I don't mind spiders. There was one that lived in the corner over my computer table, but it died last week and I kind of miss it.

If you study chaos magic,Merlo, don't mind using a fictional deity(hey, don't knock it),and feeling really ballsy, you can appeal to Atlach-Natcha:

(from Wikidpedia)
Atlach-Nacha
Atlach-Nacha is the creation of Clark Ashton Smith and first appeared in his short story "The Seven Geases" (1934). In the story, Atlach-Nacha is the reluctant recipient of a human sacrifice given to it by the toad-god Tsathoggua.

Atlach-Nacha resembles a huge spider with an almost-human face. It dwells in a huge cavern deep beneath Mount Voormithadreth, a mountain in the now vanished kingdom of Hyperborea in the Arctic. There it spins a gigantic web, bridging a massive chasm between the Dreamlands and the waking world. Some believe that when the web is complete, the end of the world will come, because it will create a permanent junction with the Dreamlands allowing monsters to move freely into the waking world.

Atlach-Nacha probably came to Earth from the planet Cykranosh (or Saturn as we know it today) with Tsathoggua. Because of its appearance, Atlach-Nacha is often referred to as the Spider-God(dess) and is believed to be the regent of all spiders. Furthermore, the giant, bloated purple spiders of Leng are thought to be its children and servitors.

There is some disagreement about its gender. In Smith's original story, Atlach-Nacha is referred to as a male, but in later stories by other authors, it is implied to be a female
