View Full Version : Favorite Fellow

Who's your favorite Fellow of the Fellowship?

Don't be too hasty in voting, because you haven't seen the rest of the movies. Merry and Pippin go on to do some pretty bad-ass stuff, the former one making an assist on killing the head Nazgul. To say nothing of Aragorn and Gandalf (yes, he lives).

I voted for Sam. He's the true hero of this epic, as is evidenced in the third book.

I picked Gandalf, but my roommate would make the perfect Sam, because he never leaves my side;) If I remenber the books right Gandalf does die, it is just when he gets to the land of the dead, the Gods send him back to the land of the living because his task was not done yet. Either way he comes back:)

Not entirely. Gandalf, Sauron and Saruman were all Maiur, who of the race of the Valar, the Gods of Middle Earth, but "of lesser degree". So they can move around with or without bodies, or "clad" or "unclad" as the Silmarillion puts it. That's why Sauron never totally dies no matter how many times you kill him - you just destroy the body, and then he's unclad agan and has to go back home and wait a while before he can sculpt a new body. Sort of like the ghosts in Pac-Man. So even if the Balrog did kill Gandalf, he could re-manifest in a new form, which is what he probably did.

Wearing one of the 3 elven-rings of power probably sped up the task a great deal!

Anyway, the Valar sent the Wizards (Istari) to middle earth to contest Sauron, but they were restricted in several ways... they had to take the guise of mortal men (Valar and Maiur can take all sorts of forms if they like)... and they could only act indirectly, to prompt mortal men and elves to great deeds. Which is all Gandalf does, through his whole career.

Wow I am impressed! You are the first person I have heard who has read the silmirillian and not had it read to them. No names huh, aren't they a bitch?:D

I would have to choose Gandalf. He, in my eyes, had the true acting power. Probably because he has been in the acting loop the longest. But that is in acting purely alone.

My favorite character by far in this movie was Gimli:D I just think dwarves are the coolest people!:D

DISCLAIMER: My post above in no way demeans the acting of the other actors in any way, shape or form. They did a wonderful job:)

Hah, everyone in Tolkienland has more names than they can count. Gandalf and Saruman were Olorin and Curunir respectively. Sauron's name has always been Sauron :)

The elven-rings had names too, I don't remember them offhand, except that Gandalf wore Nenya the ring of fire. Elrond had the sapphire one, Galadriel had the adamantie one.

i know this is OT and the criticism is out of context... but i couldn't help but look at the scene where the representatives of the various types of dwellers of Middle Earth (elves, dwarves, humans, hobbits) were gathered to decide what to do with the ring and the entire fate of the entire world and guess what..... they were all guys! Guys, guys, guys!. Sigh. Art immitates life.

On the other hand... it was the only place in the entire movie where i got distracted by analysis. i couldn't believe the movie lasted a whole three hours, i was so deeply involved in the willing suspension of disbelief. It was a truly amazing and enjoyable movie.

And i vote Frodo.... he wasn't especially magical or strong or clever or beautiful or brave.. but he accepted what life gave him and was willing to sacrifice his own wants and needs for the greater good. He is the ordinary being who is called to extrodinary deeds... and travels on with faith and hope against seemingly insurmountable odds. And blue eyes to die for.. well, ok.. they were tinted contact lenses.... but who cares.... It was a truly wonderful movie. bb talamh

Having recently re-read the book just for the pure pleasure of the escape allowed. I have to say I voted for Sam. He was the stahlwart companion to Frodo for the entire journey. He believed when many did not that good WOULD conquer evil. I have not seen the movie and I probably won't, I am a reader and movies tend to only loosely represent the book. As I consider "Lord of the Rings" a truly fine piece of literature I will keep it all in my imagination.

No, and I expect Eowyn to kick butt in the next movie.
But Tolkien modelled his story on the heroic lterature of the Norse and Anglo-Saxon cultures, and there aren't as many women as men in them. he also wrote beginning in the 1930s, when there weren't a lot of women making world decisions. That came later. When you think about it, Arwen, Eowyn, and Galadriel are pretty remarkable. As is Sam's lovely, practical wife Rose.

I chose Aragorn. He is a hero in the archetypal sense - and grows from being a loner on the Road to being a good and worthy King. And he reminds me very much, in personality and complexity of a rather special young man in my life right now. *grins*

I was Gandalf in my school's production of "The Hobbit" a bunch of years ago...I was chosen for the part because I was tall and had a good singing and speaking voice...wow...didn't know I possessed any of those until that day. It just goes to show you...

I voted Legolas cause he's hot. I know, I know... shallow and girly of me.. but thats ok. Orlando Bloom is a brilliant actor, too. :) When my mom saw the movie with my Aunt, when Legolas first appeared on the screen, my mom leaned over and said, "Betcha 20$ thats gonna be Bree's new love interest." :) Does my mom know me or what? ;)

When I first looked at the commercial, I spotted him kickly, and kept telling my friends how hot he was and they were like... yea, right, Sam (thats me, not the character! :rotfl: ), shut up and find something to do with your life, and guess what? Most of them are hooked up on him now that they saw the movie! :rotfl:

Hey, who's to argue with so many hotties in one movie - Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, even the little hobbit boys (and before the boys complain about that statement, they have Cate Blanchett and Liv Tyler, so. . .).

Does anyone else watch Mystery! on PBS? I recognized the little cutie who played Merry Brandybuck as one of the leads on a show called "Hettie Wainthrop Investigates" a BBC series starring Patricia Rutledge (aka Hyacinth Bucket on "Keeping Up Appearances"). He played a teenage hoodlum turned good, with a funky gothy fortuneteller girlfriend.

Wouldn't have this many advanced degrees if I didn't read. You fail your comps otherwise, especially the literature ones.

Seems to me there are a lot of people who read everything they can get their hands on around here.

:) I think one of the things I like about the majority of the Pagan community is they aren't content to just read the dreck on the bestseller lists. *shudders at the thought of another formula romance or legal novel*

Ok, yes Legolas is one cute elf, and his archery skills are...needless to say...amazing.

But I think as far as the book goes I like Sam the most. I think that is because I am most like Sam, and he is the true hero in the series. And lets face it, the fact that Sam says "Po-ta-toes!" even in the book is just great.

I do love Merry and Pippin too, they are wonderful in the books. Then again, Aragorn is SO cool, and Legolas and Gimli have that awsome friendship that goes against so many years of Elf/Dwarf turmoil, and yes even Boromir has to be liked he did die saving Merry and Pippin. And who can forget Gandolf and his fireworks (I agree with Sam, the elves should have added a line about that in his lement). And Frodo did offer to take the ring to be destroyed so you have to give the little guy credit for that.

I think the WHOLE fellowship is just wonderful, and I think they all must be liked for who they are and the rolls they play.

Chelle, I normally think the same way, but I can honestly say that ( at least after seeing the first, I haven't seen the second) This is the first movie I have seen that is very much like the book, it is incredible. It's beautiful, a true tribute to Tolkien's mythological creation.

I'm a sick sad love sick woman..
I voted entirely based on the one I'd most like to cart off to bed.
Legolas.

Can't help it.. he's the "light" version of my ideal *the dark version is basically the same thing, slightly *very slightly* heavier build with dark hair and eyes.. I'm so warped.
