WHO CAN TURN OFF THE LITTLE BILLY DEVICE?

"How bad is John Ashcroft? That depends...How many Anne Franks can you shove into a broom closet?"
--The Good Reverend Roger, 1/12/03

"You guys oughta form a club...and beat yourselves with it"
--Groucho Marx

Brothers and Sisters, I'm here tonight to tell ya about a VAST, EVIL CONSPIRACY that directly THREATENS America and the American way of life...and for once, it ain't the GOP...at least not TOTALLY. For the GOP is only part of that conspiracy, a small part at that...

Now, you're saying, "Little Billy, you've finally flipped"...or you're thinking, "Ah, geez, he's gonna go into a rant on the Kennedy killing, or Area 51, or some such nonsense". You couldn't be more wrong, my friends. While we ALL know that those conspiracies are fun and amusing, they are only distractions from the REAL conspiracy...The Conspiracy of Normalcy! (Henceforth referred to as the CoN)

"Now wait just a Bobdamn minute, LB...just what the HELL are you talking about?" Well, grab a seat, open a barfbag, and sit back, kids...cause I'm gonna lay it on you...

How many times in our lives have we been told HOW to ACT, friends? How many times has society told us HOW to DRESS? WHAT to LIKE? How many times have you looked at a Cosmo magazine, ladies? Not SKINNY enough, are ya? Guys, you read sports illustrated...Not BUFF enough, are you? Society tells you you're not GOOD enough, but you COULD be, if only you'd BUY what THEY have...

Sometimes they want you to buy a political idea, sometimes a new car, or an exercise machine. A McDeathburger. More insurance. Zit cream. All of them are products...pre-packaged for your CONSUMPTION...which brings me to my next point.

Names have POWER. Real power. When was the last time a politician called you a 'citizen'? When was the last time a corporation referred to us as 'customers'? No, now you are a 'TAXPAYER' or a 'CONSUMER'...Your role in life has been laid out to you...pre-packaged. Your role is to pay taxes...to a politician, that's ALL you are, besides a vote that becomes increasingly meaningless. In the eyes of a corporation, you are even LESS. You are a CONSUMER. Your entire existence is to CONSUME their products...and let me tell ya, Brothers and Sisters, have they got ways to push those products on you.

Witness the average zit-cream or deoderant commercial...what is the REAL message they are pushing on us? This..."If your body so much as gives a HINT of it's natural chemistry, you will be a social PARIAH! An OUTCAST, doomed to become a rejected non-person, doomed to bagladyhood. They've made us ASHAMED of the wonderfully complex machine we use to get our brains around...

But what of those brains? When's the last time you used yours? Sure, it's fun to listen to GOP dittoheads, spouting Rush Limbaugh's last broadcast at you VERBATIM, or the twits at Air America, if that's your thing...but tell me, friends, when was the last time you had an original thought? Don't be ashamed, it's a common problem. You are taught all of your lives by the CoN that original thought and freedom is DANGEROUS. You might make a MISTAKE, and everyone will LAUGH at you. You might not be COOL anymore, and then it's a lonely life for you...

Only recently, Brothers and Sisters, has the CoN dared be so OPEN...although Alberto Gonzalez is just a front-man, he's saying OUT LOUD what the CoN has whispered in your ear since birth: "Conform, or ELSE!"...now, howver, it's not UNCOOLNESS that you are threatened with, but DETAINMENT. No more fun for you, Charley. Ever.

Now, I'm gonna tell ya a few more things, because folks like me are gonna get shut down real soon, and

<transmission ends>

Or kill me.

Some of the things that you say remind me of the work of this guy --> Sut Jhally. He looks at the messages that advertising and media really tell people.

No problem, I TA'd a 100 level Anthro course for about a year and a half that was predominantly filled with business majors as it was a Global Studies requirement. This was my favorite video to show them. :deviltail

That guy though has done a lot of really good work, and it really helps to break down what images ACTUALLY are saying to us vs. what most people think they're saying.

I made the mistake of starting to actually LISTEN to what's being said sometime in the mid-80s.

And once you start, you can't stop, no matter how hard you try.

Sort of reminds me of that lecture I saw by some feminist who talked about advertising in the media and how they treated women. Called "Killing Us Softly."

I'll google and find her name--she's a major media deconstructuralist.

Oh, I am really glad I don't drink that then. Reminds me of True Lies

Jamie Lee Curtis: Did you ever have to kill anyone?
Guvenator: Yeah, but they were all bad.

That was a joke at my house for a long time. That and the line from the Steven Seigal movie, Under Seige I think, I'm just a cook:wave:

Im not trying to nitpick here or anything, I am really curious as to what this has to do with paths. Arnt you supposed to discuss differant paths here, or tell people about your own path, ask about others ect ect...it seems to me, this should be in the rants section...or just silly. Sorry, but educate me please, if you can.

Ranting about the Conspiracy(tm) IS telling people about my path, for what it's worth.

Gwenhwyfar

OK, sounding silly is what he's supposed to do, so that makes it serious? I dont get it myself, but some people must, so each to their own. I still think if your gonna rant you should do it in the rant and rage thread. But whatever.

1. What part of this sermon was silly? :sniffsnif

2. But this rant has to do with my path. Given the choice, I think it belongs here.

I didnt mean your rant was silly, I dont think that at all. Im just trying to understand where your comming from is all.

Well, underneath this shallow exterior, there is an enormous lack of character....so the rant is what it is. It is intended to be taken as written...no secret codes, etc.

No, he's talking about things that are serious and a part of his belief system, but some of the way he presents things could be viewed as round about (or silly).

However, the ideas themselves aren't silly, and are serious. For example, if you look at the history of advertising we've moved from advertising at the beginning of the 20th century as primarily education based (meaning it gave examples of the quality of the item being sold and what it does) to emotionally based (meaning you sell items based on the emotions that you generate in consumers).

When you look at a full page ad for perfume in a magazine, what do you see? Usually some sexy looking man or woman. What in the hell does that tell you about the quality of the perfume? It could be made from cat pee for all you know, but the image itself sells the idea that you spray this perfume on and you WILL be sexy, and desirable, and whatever you aren't that you truly long to be. It's not selling the perfume, it's selling the "idea" of the perfume.

What advertisers realize that most people do not think about is that you can't fuel the myth of perpetual economic growth by telling people what things do. You have to tell people what things will do for them. Most people want to be happy, but what really makes us happy? If you look at studies, it's not money, but meaningful human relationships. Advertising builds the idea that meaningful human relationships and happiness can be bought in a bottle.

The problem comes when people don't think about the messages they are given from the things that happen around them. Advertising is just one example of that, and I think that's what Little Billy was getting at. Or I could be wrong, and if that's so, then I've just embarassed myself. :bigredblu
