I've dicsovered that my school's track/football field is a good spot for finding rocks. Ever since I decided to go rock-searching, there's this one rock that kind of throws me off.
Around yesterday right when Phys Ed finished, I was walking to the locker rooms when I kicked what felt like a fairly large and dense rock. I look around for it, and I find it and pick it up. The first thing that strikes me is that the rock is a very odd color--a dull, nondescript green that, as I'm looking at it right now, seems more like a green-tinged brown. And it's really smooth as well, which reminds me a lot of jade, but it's got an irregular shape that I don't think jade would have.
It's probably really strange to find greenish rocks in California, and more so if you live on an island near the coast like me. Also, it's not smooth in the way water would make it--there's dozens of shallow cracks and nicks in it, although the edges have been smoothed down. For the sake of my mind I'll put it down to being in the water only a short while, but this rock is still really confusing me.
Is this some sort of jade or marble that's been washed up, or is it something else? I haven't read up on rock types and stones/crystals a lot, so advice would really help.
