I've heard from the Darklord this afternoon and the man who spends his days and nights helping others needs help himself. He has a slipped disk. I don't know how it happened yet but I do know that they are painful as hell. Any healing energy you can spare would be appreciated 'cause the sooner we get him healed, the sooner he'll be back here spreading mischief!

Darklord Kodiak Update:

The Darklord got in touch this morning. He has three slipped disks and "spinal abnormalities" and he's scheduled to see a surgeon. He's telling me not to worry (Fat Chance! I'm at Def-Con 5 of Worry!) and that he's sure he'll be fine. He expects to be laid up for a while and doesn't know when he will be able to get back here. I have his phone number and believe me, I'm going to use it as soon as I can get my hands on a phone card! When I know more, specifically, when/if he has surgery scheduled I'll post it here. Meanwhile, please keep him in your thoughts.

I suspect that he's hurting more than he's telling me. If they decide on surgery, it will be soon. They don't like to let these things linger and it has been, I think, about 5 weeks since he was injured. That's why I'm going to call this weekend. Normally, he's a hard man to catch but I suspect this has slowed him down enough that I might have a chance! (Yes, trying to laugh here. DK would want me to.)

I just got off the phone with Darklord. He's seen the surgeon and will see him again on Monday. He's drugged up pretty good but it's not helping him much. The plan now is for one disk to be removed and have his spine fused. That could change. He's been told that recovery could take from three to six months. Plus, once he is recovered, he won't be able to work as an EMT anymore. The surgery hasn't been scheduled yet, pending more tests, but I'll know when it is (he promised) and I'll post it here.

I'm still thinking about him.Me too. He's still working light duty but neither he nor I know what he'll be doing after the surgery. He's sure he won't be able to do EMT work in the field like he has been doing. I'm hoping that since he was in such good shape before this happened, his recovery time will be shorter.

wear a bracelet of aragonite-calcite, if you can get hold of it

if surgery is inevitable, look for a good point of time; try not hve it done in a moon in capricorn time.

also waning moon is a good point of time for this kind of surgery

I talked to DK about 45 minutes ago. He's going to be getting a second opinion. The surgeon wants to treat the problem with cortizone injections directly into the spine. That treatment would only mask the problem rather than fix it. DK wants it fixed. So, off to another doctor. *sigh* Hugs DK. And go down to Just Silly for a laugh....

I had the shots into my spine 10 years ago and it helped tremendously. It got me to where I wasn't walking with a cane and then I was able to manage the pain herbally. It has never totally gone away.. except for a few months when I was getting treatment on this new back machine... it was wonderful. Then i lost that insurance when I was laid off. _inabox_

Okay guys. The Darklord and I managed a quick exchange of PMs last night while he was at work. Last Wednesday he had an epidural in an attempt to help with the pain. Not only did it not work, the pain got worse. :( I really don't know how he's managing. :hugz: (For those of you unfamiliar with epidurals, they are injections given directly into the spine. They are usually given to women in labor to block the pain of childbirth.) And as far as I know, he hasn't found another doctor to consult -- he says he's looking for a good one and since he's part of Milwaukee's health care system, he's in a position to check the reputation of any doctor that he's considering.
We need to keep the energy flowing for pain relief, finding a good doctor and just letting the man know that he isn't alone in this. Thanks everyone.

Holy cow.More like since mid-January, I think. By the time he was able to contact me -- the day I started this thread -- the injury was about 4 weeks old. He's taking three pain medications, two of which I remember: Vicodin and morphine. They give him some relief but he's never completely without pain and sometimes he's in quite a bit, despite the medication.
When I first found what he did for a living, I called him a hero. Little did I know how right I was. I am completely in awe of him.

Found a PM from DK in my box this morning. He has another epidural scheduled for April 2 (next Sunday) but he doesn't know if he will have it since the first one did no good. The pain is really bad and he describes his condition as day to day. Surgery is still looking good. He didn't say if he'd found a doctor to do it.

He did say to thank you all for your support and that he misses us. He hopes to be back with us soon. As soon as I know something about when/if he's having surgery, I'll post it. In the meantime, please keep the energy coming. Thanks.

Has he considered having a nerve blocker/stimulator (thing a ma jig that I don't know what its called)? (I don't know if this will work or not in this instance). Both my Grandpa and my step-dad have had continual back/shoulder problems... and this thing was the only thing that successfully eased the pain. (G-pa wound up addicted to painkillers before trying this. :( )

My accident was work-related. A few years ago, I thought it would all just heal up and I would be fine. I found out about a year and a half ago that I'm not, found out when I tried to take a job as a cashier, feet wouldn't hold me up. Comp ignored me for a year! I hung onto the job as long as I could, I figured they would have to see how bad working made it. I would get home at night, unlock the front door and crawl through the house because I couldn't walk any more. Then I find out that when it swells like that, I am doing more damage, so while waiting for comp to take responsibility, I made it worse, I hung onto that job just over a year, tried cutting the hours down but it didn't help. Comp has only helped for about six months, now that I have permanently damaged my feet! I never knew that nerve damage was an issue, or that my feet would never heal from it ( the chemical burns were second and third degree). Now I am partly disabled because of it all and have no idea what will happen in the future from it! My doctor says that I am probably going to be found untrainable because I have to keep my feet elevated. Our wonderful comp insurance companies. I sure hope he can get through this easier than what I have been through! He's gonna need all we can send him and then some!
