Check out this blog entry with a photo of a Texas oak tree that has buck antlers "grafted" to it. (http://tinselman.typepad.com/tinselman/2005/08/keysers_horned_.html)

I knew that you could graft other types of trees to grow on a tree (they do that with fruit trees all the time -- for instance there are "fruit salad trees" (http://www.fruitsaladtrees.com/) where there are multiple types of fruit grown on the same tree.

Perhaps it's not really accurate to say the antlers on the Texas oak are "grafted" as much as stuck to the tree and the tree grew over them. Like trees do when you nail a wire fence to them.

That sucks. I wonder how people would feel if they had a tree stick a branch in them to be stuck with?:(

Yup, the tree is growing around the intrusion. Poor tree. :(
Stupid humans.

I suspect the tree took it pretty much in stride. I also imagine that the tree had more in common with the Elk that grew those antlers than with the man who nailed them there.

it's not much different than someone hammering in a nail and the tree growing around it.. I'm just surprised that mice or squirrels haven't been gnawing away at them over the years
people are weird.. personally I prefer our oak...

it's one of the main reasons we bought the place.. one of these days I need to get some pics of hubby on horseback under it!

I simply must say this--Anubis, I LOVE your tree pictures.

And I feel sorry for the Texan oak with antlers stuck on it, but it DOES look funny.

If I had a digital camera and the knowledge to upload pictures into my computer, or at least the means to scan pictures, I would take pictures of the two cherry trees in front of my apartment door.
