Besides amber and petrified wood, what stones are derived from trees or other plants?

Jet.

You could argue for coal and diamonds ;)

Jet yes it is wood based I believe. Coal is more from dinosaure/animal deposits. However I would need to go and check my info on that to be totally certain. Coal is often refered to as fossile fuel.

coal is from a plant also. It's fossilized plant matter. In fact it was a prehistoric fern. Also diamonds as they were once coal as well. However i would not include a hekimer diamond as those are quartz crystal formation.

peeking in from my business trip (i ma supposed to be sleeping right now)

plants form under pressure and lots of time into carbon-"items":
coal but also petrol
petrified petrol is jet
if the pressure goes on, diamonds are formed

in a nut shell.

there are:
copal and amber, which are the petrified resin of trees
also rubber-wood-resin, petrified (which is often sold as green amber)
than there is petrified wood, mammouth-tree, peanut-wood and opalized petrified wood

i am sure there are some more fossils that are petrified plants

the petoskey stone however is petrified coralm and corals are rather animal kingdom than plants, but if you want to llook at them as plants, than also coral, apple coral and petrified coral

thats all i can come up with atm.

i agree herkimer diamonds dont count, although some of them have inclusions of coal/fuel in them

Only other thing that comes to mind off the top of my head is Corprolite (dino dung).. depending on the dino's diet of course.

Here's a picture of Corprolite for those not familiar with it. This piece comes from Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta Canada.

Lastly, here is an interesting tidbit I came across while studying phosphorus minerals.

"Nevertheless, an interesting anecdote is that more than 40 of the known cave minerals contain phosphorus. The phosphorus in these minerals is derived from bat droppings called guano."

This is in reference to phosphorus minerals found in fruit bat caves.

Amber... has always been one of my favorite things to collect.. especially those pieces which contain inclusions. Funny thing about amber for me is I do not enjoy working with it yet I love how it looks. After some years of collecting I totally fell in love with Burmese Amber and have narrowed my collection to that.

Yes I dug into the subject more and find now that LD and CW are right. There is always room for learning. However somewhere I was told that coal was also from dead animals. Ah well I must go now and revise some notes I have. Thanks all.
