Ok, this will sound really weird, but here it goes: So, on ABC, they have this show called LOST, right. So there's this counter that they have to reset every 108 minutes or something nebulously "bad" will happen-- no one really knows what it is...
So last night, they let it run past zero, and the counter started flashing all these hieroglyphics. We were taping, so when the ep was over, we rewound and paused it at that part, and I drew out the glyphs.
So, I thought I would post in here and see if any of you recognized this sequence or something. The first three glyphs were written on a black background, and the last two on a red background (I don't know if that signifies anything)... The second glyph was not shown (the character reset the counter, and it flipped back to the arabic numerals) so I put a question mark there. Anyway, here it is:http://www.mysticwicks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=60544&d=1140120357
I thought maybe the first three were like the life, prosperity, health thing (except in a different order)... The prosperity one (that thing that could be a feather or a flame or something) is slightly different than the glyph that was on TV last night, but it's the closest one that I've found... The missing one, then, would be an ankh.... but I could be completely off-base. ^_^
If you don't know, that's fine. I thought you'd probably have more of a clue than I, though. ^_^

Ankh Udja Seneb - Life Prosperity Health
Seneb is the first glyph. apparently a folded cloth.. but who knows
Definitions:
1. healthy (adjective); to heal (verb)
2. safe, secure, clear of harm or trouble
3. to become healthy, recover
4. to be healthy, to be well
The third one that looks kinda like a flame is Udja
Definitions:
1. uninjured, healthy, hale, sound
2. prosperous
3. to remain over (remainder in a mathematical calculation)
4. well-being, prosperity
5. a storehouse
6. a pectoral (wide necklace for the chest), particularly for amuletic protection
7. an amulet, particularly a protective amulet
8. to go, set out or proceed
9. to attain
10. to set or go down (sunset)
The next one looks like the vulture. I don't know what it'd mean. Don't think I've seen the last one before
I'm am definitely not any kind of expert, lol

ok, that last glyph i think is hieratic. if its what i think it is, then it'll be something to do with death. or an enemy
generally, something bad

Thank you very much! You know more than I do about this.
I know I'm such a geek because it's just a tv show, but it's intriguing nonetheless, and I know it's there for a reason.
I IMed a friend of mine and she told me that "the last one is a determinative for die or enemy" and suggested possibilities for the first four letters (since the second is missing, there are some options):"swDA - 'die' saDA - 'ruin'" Now I have to figure out what "determinative" means. ^_^
Very interesting. Thank you.

a determinative is a non-phonetic glyph that ends a series of phonetic glyphs (a word) to determine it's general meaning.
it'd be kinda like writing "sun" and then drawing a picture of the sun at the end of the word, just so there's no confusion.
one determinative is, in fact, a picture of the sun (it's a circle with a little circle in it). it ends words like 'sun', 'day', 'time', 'rise', 'shine' etc..

Bast-Mutants! omg. can you believe i've never heard that before? that's so awesome
I guess I'm the unmutated version eh? ;)
I can't even blame Bast entirely for this outbreak of pink... because Daddy finds it so amusing. I don't think Uncle Set is too impressed though. and Mut.. I don't think she can be bothered either way

Yeah I started calling myself a Bast-Mutant, and it's stuck with me, then spread to Padjai. I love it. ^_^ It's very fitting for me. Not sure if it fits the rest of my siblings.
Leave it to the comic book geek to come up with the mutant comment. *g*

Hehe! This came up on the Egyptology livejournal community as well. Here's some of the more relevant replies:
"The first symbol is an s, the second is too dark to read. The third... I'm not sure what that's supposed to be... a reed-leaf combined with something. Then there's the "egyptian vulture" or "aleph", which represents a weak sound (often represented by a vowel, such as a in transliteration).
The last sign is where things get interesting. See Egyptian words typically start out with phonetic signs, glyphs that represent how the word was pronunced, followed by a "determiner," a sign that lets you know what semantic class the word falls in (e.g. "plant" "person" "abstract noun" "dancing" "substance that comes in granules" and so on). This particular determiner means "enemy; foreigner; demon." From what little I've seen of Lost... well that sounds interesting to say the least."
"swDA (cloth, spiral-w, fire-drill, egyptian vulture, that same determiner). My best Egyptian dictionary is German, and it renders it as "Dahingehen (sterben)" Dahingehen, I think, means "to go there, to get lost," and sterben of course means "die.""
"Faulkner has it as "to depart" in death.... but not with that determinitive... but the sign list says it's the determinitive for "death, enemy"... so that sorta makes sense."
"I found swD3 in Faulkner as a causitive verb "die". (Pg 218, second from the bottom)"
Hope that helps.
