Hi Today I brought a very pretty sterling silvernecklace with a black stone heart in it. It said it was a black Diamond. It looks more like hematite. does anyone know anything about 'black diamonds?'
Many thanks in advance.
Jess

EDITED TO ADD: after doing a little bit of research they are one and the same. hematite is hematite until it is faceted and then it becmes a black diamond *rolls eyes* Go figure!

It is a hematite - it is just another name for it - sometimes also called an Alaskan Black Diamond - I have an old ring with a hematite in a marque cut (I think - retangle-faceted) and it was referred to as a Black diamond - they were very popular in the 70s and known as Black diamonds.

So it's just your usual hematite.

learn something new every day. see i didnt know that.

all i would have said, that if it WAS a black diamond, than it would probably not be set in silver

unless it was cubic zirkonia

now i have learned they call hematite black diamond

Thanks for your responces guy's.. You should have seen me and hubby looking at it in the truck, trying to decide what it was lol
Good thing for the internet withing 5 minutes I had my answer.
Sometimes I am rather fond of technology. It's a very pretty necklace though, and i also like hematite so it's all good.
Hubby brought me home an early birthday present... A rainbow Obsidian butterfly..... He's a keeper i think.

Another little factoid...In the Victorian Era...Marcasite was also called Black Diamond. The ladies wore it alot when in mourning and compelled my society to dress in black for a year.
