View Full Version : Why call it a colour "WAR"?

i know it's all in fun and all that... but especially with all the real wars raging across our planet and all the death and misery and suffering they cause..... can't we call it a campaign or a competition or a contest or something... anything... except a war???
There is power in words. We all know that... And that words and intent are closely linked. So why are we using the language and words of death and hatred to describe something as good natured and innocent as what colour the layour of MW will be???

Green! War is nothing to feel qweasy about I mean come on it isnt war (not until I hear bombs falling on Green headquarters), and show me a casualty! There is no blood between blue and green (hey there's an idea, RED!, na...) so relax and enjoy the conflict.

For the love of pete, Talmah, you have reached a new, unprecedented plateau of ridiculousness. Let me try to explain the "color war" in very simple terms -
We are just competing over what the board will look like. We are not actually picking up weapons and literally attacking one another. It is a figurative war, not a literal one.
This is actually a good thing. Someone on the board says "Color War", and someone who lived 30 years ago would immediately assume it's about race. But nobody made that error. That's progress.
I love people who think they can cure the world's woes by throwing out their kids GI Joe toys. That's NOT progress. When I see people do stuff like this I just laugh and laugh and laugh. Sometimes I point, and laugh at the same time, just for effect.

Let's See...Tug of War, War of the Sexes, neither of these imply actual war, either.
And what, exactly..IS war? Fierce battle (and we know that battle can be fought with words, or by energy, by economic sanctions, what have you. Not just GUNS) between two or more "opposing" forces, for Territory, Land, Rights, etc.
Right? So...quite simply...War does not always indicate violence, and harm. I'm often at "war" with myself...but..that doesn't mean i'm stabbing myself repeatedly, nor strapping myself to a bomb. War is Struggle..or Conflict. And it can be "healthy" (as in tug of war, where we see it as a competition with positive "team" building attributes), or as in war with ones self, which implies a certain amount of self observation, and evaluation.
So...I hate to say it..but I have to agree with Illuminatus here.
Words have power...yes. On the other hand, what is more important even than the words you say, is the intent with which you say them.
For example..if I say "Abracadabra", right now...no spell is being cast, or magick being done, for there is no intent behind it. Correct?
So...I think you are wayyyyyyy too reactionary, Talamh. Choose your "Battles", for somethings, simply are not worth the attention that you pay to them.

you all have a really valid point and i dont want to take sides but i thought that someone should defend talamh!
although it is easy enough to say there is no ill intent behind the word war in this circumstance, it is so easy for some people to dismiss it, but people like me and others (i think) feel sick when i see the word and it may seem a bit dramatic but i'm beginning to cry now. my dad has left a few days ago to go to oman to fight in this war, i'm really really close to my parents and this has totally devistated me, not so long ago i would probably have agreed that this thread was over the top but things like this can change a perspective so much. i will have very little contact with my dad for a month, maybe longer, maybe i'll never see him again, all because of war, that is why some people get upset about this use of a simple word.
please dont just miss this post out! read it!

Aradia- that's just 'lumie's attitude in general. :D ; you get used to it. Besides, he makes some good points.
I'm sorry to everyone who get such a horrible feeling from the word war. I've lost friends and/or family in fighting before, and I know the kind of emotions the word can stir up.
However, I think that here it's taken lightly, hey in a way it even LIGHTENS even if just for a few minutes, the meaning of "war"! if we can turn it into a game for a few. . . they it'll perhaps hurt less those few minutes. Try letting your heart lighten. I know it's a scary, painful time, but. . . we've gotta try to have fun. If the people over there thought they were fighting for a bunch of depressed, sad, "this reminds me of war so I think I'll just stop doing half of everything everyday", then I daresay they WOULDN'T be over there fighting. Give them something happy to hear about and see! ^____^ have fun!
ne, on with the colour war! Or pigment battle! or hue hullaballoo! or countless other things! ^__^ call it whatever you like, it's still the blasted same thing hehe

What they said.
Yes words have meaning, but they have many meanings. I'm sorry you don't like the word... but then.. if you hate it so much, why did you put it in big CAPS in the title? I some of you don't like it, and I know some of you will probably try to use a different word now, but there's no offence meant there.

(watches 'lumie do his cute lil dance)
Well... i understand the idea that laughing at something can make it less scary......
But so much of this world is based on deliberate adversity... the courts, business, academia..... deliberate duality rather then trying for considered consensus. Yes, i know it would be difficult to achieve consensus in this particular medium........ but so far Ball-Bhreac Ròn is the only person to make a non-adversarial suggestion - that we use a rainbow colour scheme.
Or perhaps we could have a system of going through the colour wheel with the wheel of the year... following northern or southern hemisphere seasonal changes... starting with black and white for deep winter.. going to blues and gradual greens for spring into gold for summer into red and orange and yellow and brown for autumn into purples and blues and then the black and white of deep winter again....
i don't see my objection to the usage of the word "war" as being depressive or morbid... i'm suggesting we try to be more creative in how we speak.. because that both reflects and affects how we think and act. In a war there are winners and losers. Why set up a construct that necessitates winners and losers? There's enough of that in the world already. Why not try something different? Why not try to try for something different? Maybe there's a better way.....
And hugs for you, MysTik. It must be very difficult. Thank you for helping make what's going on in the world more personal. It's all too easy to become too theoretical. You obviously love your Dad so much... Goddess keep him safe and help us all to find a way to live peaceably together. bb talamh

If you consider the colour of a Pagan forum as adversarial that is your prerogative.
I personally think you have way too much time on your hands :)

Yes... this is NOT a subject to be getting all angst-y about...
Relax... chill... don't be lookin' for new ways to be offended, there are plenty of old ways to go around for everybody...
Personally, I think we should settle this issue like our Ancestors would have...
...with swords & axes...

i'm not all angst-y...... just sad sometimes that the world is the way it is.... Choose my "battles". you say? There we go with the language of war again. Have you ever noticed how well we are all trained to use the language of war? Maybe because it makes it all that much easier to send us off to war.
Don't worry. i'm not going to go into a boring pacifist rant. i'm sure you've heard it all before.
So when it comes to colour.... i'm going to be Switzerland... and instead of being known for Swiss army knives.. it's going to be the talamh pacifist althame. So there. :) bb talamh

if this was about my color war thread, it was meant in fun. Some
took it serious and I posted little disclaimers. I started
mentioning "color war" the last time we voted for color when I introduced a fictional warrior character who helped rally the purple team to beat the blue.(yay us)
Its a poll, vote as you choose. Free will and all that. There has
to be a fair way to let the people choose the color they want
(not really, mol could just pick and say, "tuff!") this system works
well, and there havent been very many complaints about it.
We can all agree to disagree, right? right?
As for it being a war? hardly. whats in a name and all that.
(ok, thats gonna bite me) am tired and slow. Probably will be
explaining this again tomorrow... LOL

I feel I have to put in some wise words here.
You said that words have power. Yeah, I know. But they have no power without true intent behind them.
