View Full Version : Magic Against Bird Flu

Some members of the group I work with, have suggested trying to do some ritual or spellwork against the spread of Bird Flu, or at least something for the general protection of birds.
I'm not sure what I think about this. Of course it saddens me greatly to hear of so many birds dying of this disease and worries me that it might spread to other animals and people. But is it too wide a subject to be affected by spellwork? I mean I'm not sure how to construct a spell specific enough to address such a huge problem. I also have doubts about how the morale of the group will fare if we attempt something which quite honestly I think may be too big for us.
At the moment it is only talk, and we will discuss it more in the next few weeks. Maybe I'll be more sure what I think by then.

But what do you all think about this?

Meh...

Perhaps there is a reason for this flu. Disease is a part of existence, and though we are usually successful at fending it off, I think we're inevitably going to have to face our mortality and our general insignificance in the cycle of life and death.

There are always going to be big catastrophes to help regulate population growth... maybe disease is just as sacred and necessary as protection and health... Thus, IMO the spell might not necessarily be effective. It would be like casting a spell against famine or flooding. Controlling nature doesn't strike me as being very practical, and might actually be damaging.

Of course, on an emotional level, it seems like a highly worthy cause for ritual... just not biologically, you know?

I agree with Benvarry. Its sad when things like this happen, but its not your place to stop it. Treat the sick and hope for an end/cure but don't use magic againist it. This is nature's way of controling poplation and it may seem cruel but it is needful. Any time there is an over poplation there is something to put it back into check. That way the whole balance isn't thrown out of loop which would worse for everything everywhere not just earth.

I think you should do it, because while diseases may be natural, you should still try and stop the disease, i hope that the scientists find a cure but we need magic too, it may address a balance but children could die and i most human lives are worth saving (unless of course we're talking about pediphiles or racists like the KKK, then maybe we can all transfer bird flu to them), but anyway, you and your group should go for it :).

Cassie, while your cause is surely noble, I want you to consider any and all consequences. I am by no means a biologist, actually I'm an engineer, but what if once this disease stops spreading, a new more deadlier one pops up? I think you should hold your cards and wait a little longer to see how things play out, as cold as that sounds. Large ecological systems such as our planet are not simple by a long shot. There may be some unseen variable that causes a whole bunch of unforeseen consequences.

I had a dream last night that me and my closest friends started using magic for all sorts of things that we felt was right. We got stronger and stronger and we were able to stop hurricanes and save people from collapsing buildings. At the end of my dreams, we were on a coastline where we had predicted a tsunami was to occur. My best friend stood in front as we saw the tsunami approach. We used as much energy as possible to stop it, but for some reason the tsunami only got bigger. I poured all my energy into it to stop it and it must have grown another 5 feet higher. It seems like things were backfiring horribly. I grabbed my friend, who was still trying to calm the wave, and ran like hell. My friends, some family, including my twin, and a whole lot of people were sucked into the ocean. I saw them drowning every time I looked back. I was caught in the current with my friend and we tried as hard as we could to escape. I was knocked out and wound up on shore far away. All my friends were gone, and there was nothing but destruction in the tsunamis wake.

Ok, here's where my crazy shaman views come into play and where all the skeptics go “Fire Sage, go hug a tree you air headed hippie.” I know that my dream may seem dark or just plain silly. However, I think there were a couple of wise spirits trying to teach me a point about the earth and our role on it. The earth is by no means a simple place, but a complex system of shifting lava plates, rolling oceans, a mass of air, and a balance of an incredible ecological system. We must be careful about how we treat it and be wary that our good intentions may cause more harm than good. My final advice is this: I would not try to interfere with nature unless it really reaches an extreme point and magic is used as a last ditch effort. I don't think it's time to stop the bird flu. However, I think it might reach a point of desperateness when we will need to interfere with our energy but I don't think the time is now.

I think there are some very good points there Fire Sage. I am pretty much of the same opinion actually.

Bird flew, bird flew, flew my bird
Another way the flue bird heard

The birds we named all flew, all flew south
Another illness was word of mouth

The birds we never named, never would smile
The birds of mystery Alyousous Pyle

On a bicycle the bird road
Singing a story of sadness and woe

As the bird road he sang his song
All the birds knowing the way was wrong

Alyousous did sing and did not know
Where went Alyousous, where should he go

The sky did change from blue to grey
Alyousous road and the flue bird played

The sky did change from grey black
Road on Alyousous and never came back.

Well now!

I am no longer sick and I still believe Alyousous will ride away with the bird flu. Or is it the Flue Bird, Witch heard?

Either way, the birds, the birds, off they fly
It is no longer for them to die

Singing they don't for they scurry
Out of hell they do hurry

Fly birds, fly
Or another song Alyousous will try

April is National Poetry Month (in U.S.A.)...

Seriously, this website q-and-a from the Australia sounds reasonable and it comes down to check your local chickens...actually keeping in touch with news in your local area and see if they import birds, etc...and if you did have worries locally, perhaps the magical work should be toward 'health protection' and 'conscious awareness'.

I've actually heard that a young girl was able to save lives in disasters such as the tsunami with such awareness...

Hope this helps in your work to assuage worries...

No one is safe from the MegaGenoPharmaBioCorp. Prayer and rituals are to be moderated to make sure that they are in service to the future American empire and the aristocracy.

They will get some of us... but they will never get us all!

Well, if they put a stop to bad poetry in spellcasting, I - for one - am all for it.
