As you know, two weeks ago President Bush walked away
from a campaign promise to lower carbon pollution from
big power plants. In that announcement, he also questioned
the basic science on global warming, a point of view
far outside the mainstream of science.
We're sorry to report that today he went even further.
The Bush administration has just announced that it
will walk away from the only international effort to
deal with global warming -- the Kyoto Protocol. This
agreement represents the world coming together to take
initial steps toward limiting carbon pollution. It
is currently the world's best hope to limit the effects
of global warming. The United States signed this agreement
in 1997 and has been hard at work negotiating its implementation
in order to make it practical and workable. President
Bush's decision abrogates a US commitment to the rest
of the world, and could throw away hard won international
progress on this crucial issue.
BUT WE ARE NOT GIVING UP. THE ISSUE IS TOO IMPORTANT!
The Administration must begin to understand
that these decisions are not only bad policy, they
are bad politics as well. They must begin to understand
that the public does not and will not support these
kinds of decisions. Please join with us again to make
the point to the President: these decisions cannot
stand.
