View Full Version : Sumerian Recons

I am very intrested in the Sumerian path and have started studying Sumerian mythology, religion and culture. I am fascinated by Sumerian tales such as Inanna's descent into the underworld and the epic of Gilgamesh.

My question is: Are there any Sumerian Recons or Sumerian-based Pagans here? If so, do any of you recommend any books or links to help me with my study?

Thanks,
Brandon

Not a Sumerian recon here, but I know of an LJ community for them: http://community.livejournal.com/sumerian_pagan/profile

There are also a couple of Yahoo groups where you'd be very welcome. ReconInterfaith has at least one Sumerian recon member: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ReconstructionistInterfaith/
and Natib Qadish is focused on Canaanite religion, but it has members from a variety of ANE religions and we happily discuss all of them: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canaanitepaganism/

Some links you may find helpful:

Sumerian Mythology FAQ http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/sumer-faq.html

Assyro-Babylonian Mythology FAQ http://home.comcast.net/~chris.s/assyrbabyl-faq.html

Good luck with your search. I was just pondering the other day about how Canaanite paganism is growing pretty steadily, but I haven't heard much from Sumerian and Babylonian folks.

Sumerian reconstructionism interest's me too, and Openhand's provided some very great sites for you, i'd also add Tablet's of Destiny (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TabletofDestiny/), it's a yahoo group with some Sumerian reconstructionist's there, also check out the files section, i think, as there is some information there about the Sumerian beliefs, the gods, how to worship them, etc.

Also, if you can you may want to check out Gods, Demons and symbols Ancient Mesopotamia by Jeremy Black and Anthony Green (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0292707940/qid=1142093568/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-0778611-8152026?s=books&v=glance&n=283155), i haven't got it, but apparantly, it's one of the best book's, you can get on Sumerian/Mesopotamian beliefs.

Hope this helps.

Hey, like I said, some of those links are really cool, although for some reason, there's a few that aren't working.

Anyway, I thought you and anyone interested in the Sumerian religion (either as recons or just general interest) might want to check out this site:

The Temple of Sumer (http://templeofsumer.org/) - it's by a really knowledgable Sumerian recon, IMO.

Thanks for the link, David19. I will check it out!

And, I will also review the links I posted and get rid of the ones that aren't working. Admittedly, I just grabbed them from previous threads just so that we could have 1 thread with them all in one place.

I haven't had much time lately as we're in the midst of selling our home and my time online is minimal....but I have a big interest in this and I will definitely be devoted some time to it. :)

Okay, links have been updated and leaves roughly half of what we had originally. I will try to hunt down a few new ones to add to the list. :)

Thanks, I'm still reading through the links, there's a lot of useful info there, one of the things I'd like to research is the daily religious life of the Sumerians, and see how I and others could adapt it for the modern world.

BTW, cesara, I'm not sure if you'd be interested but there's a book called 'Religions of the Ancient World' by Sarah Iles Johnston (http://www.amazon.com/Religions-Ancient-World-University-Reference/dp/067401517) - I recently ordered it (or to be more precise, I got my mum to buy for me ;)) and it has a lot of great info on the majority of the religions of the ancient Middle East and Meditaranean(sp?) including Sumer (I'd also recommend it for those interested in the ancient Egyptian religion, Hellenic, Canaanite, Israelite, etc or for those who want to know more about magic in that particular area).

The UFO ideas originate with, first, Erich von Däniken and then with Zechariah Sitchin, there is absolutely no evidence in their claims and they're basically a joke.

This site, Sitchiniswrong.com (http://www.sitchiniswrong.com/) is by an actual Sumerian scholar - who can read cuneiform (the language of the Sumerians, Sitchin can't).

I'd say only listen or read Sitchin or Von Daniken if you want a good laugh or to read trashy (and not even good) fiction (to my knowledge, one of the most famous groups to take those beliefs seriously are www.joyofsatan.com, a neo-nazi group who support very extreme anti-Semitism (apparantly, the owner has declared an "astral war" on Jews), so it should show you some of the types of people that take the "theories" seriously).

I didnt like it simply for the fact it suggests Asar and other gods are aliens.

Glad you like all the links posted, if you want to learn more about Sumerian reconstructionism, this board, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TabletofDestiny/ ia very good - it's a general recon board but has a lot of Sumerian recons on there too, the guy who owns it is a very knowledgable Sumerian.
