Honestly, the book that really helped me learn the astrology basics was "The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need"...by umm Joanna Martine Woolfolk. It was a really good beginning book for me.
www.astrology-numerology.com might have some good beginning stuff too, as well as www.cafeastrology.com
even http://www.astrology.com/aboutastrology/index.html has some good beginner stuff, but www.astro.com is absolutely the best free chart site

there are a number of threads in the circle of teaching astrology archive here :D some great information!
a great way to learn is to use google! start with your own chart, and google it's features.. "sun in the 4th house" or "mars conjunct neptune" into google and you'll come up with all sorts of references to read.
here's some of the books i recommend, also.

I was just wondering, I had to browse through several pages of the forum here to find this thread with links. Would it be possible for a moderator here to do a sticky on this one or some other thread with a list of resources such as books and links? I seem to recall there was another one with even more listed but I haven't found it yet, and I think a sticky for links would be incredibly helpful??
Just a thought.

sites ... i would also include
maurice fernandez on evolutionary astrology ... not someone i always agree with, but a lot of great information (if one can stomach the bit of gurunessity going on there), especially relating to neptune & pisces ...
http://www.mauricefernandez.com/forum%5Feng/default.asp?CAT_ID=2
philip sedgwick, especially informative on the GC ... http://www.philipsedgwick.com/
books ... erin sullivan, stephen arroyo, steven forrest, robert hand
i'm sure there's more, but that's all i got for now.

thanks for the link ... interesting stuff ... at astrodienst they thought i was crazy because i wanted to chart my birth info from the perspective of the galactic center (versus the standard geocentric and heliocentric charts) ... their response was 'how small our solar system is vis a vis the entire galaxy would be so insignificant why would you want that information.' my response was, "well, some people like puzzles with more than 100 pieces."
and yes, although there are times i STRONGLY disagree with him, anything by dane rudhyard is worth a read through (and he has a lot of info online) if for no other reason to push your buttons (whether that is to push to reach further or to get your ire up) ... i put hickey in the same category with liz greene ... someone everyone should thumb through and see if its for them, personally, i've never been able to buy anything by either of those two.

I think what he means is that if you view our solar system from the GC, then my chart (and the chart for anyone born in 1960) will look like this:
Sun - 26Gem18
Moon - 26Gem18
Mercury - 26Gem18
Venus - 26Gem18
Mars - 26Gem18
Jupiter - 26Gem18
Saturn - 26Gem18
Uranus - 26Gem18
Neptune - 26Gem18
Pluto - 26Gem18
Chiron - 26Gem18
Xena - 26Gem18
Sedna - 26Gem18
Since not only our solar system but our solar system plus all the nearby solar systems (eg Alpha Centauri) will appear in the same place to within a minute.
Of course, even the term "Gemini" would be a bit misleading. The constellation of Gemini certainly wouldn't look anything like it does from Earth, so we really are simply referring to a segment of sky here - and whether that has any meaning at all at the GC is another argument.

yeah, yeah, yeah (must you be so practical?!!! lol ... always strappin' my boots to the planet, now aren't you fluff!) ... but did you see this article .... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060908/ap_on_sc/very_accurate_clock
so, while the degrees and the minutes may say NOTHING except the general apsect for all of us in the context of the universe, the nanoseconds that separate us may tell a universe of information about the individual in context of that 26 Gem 18 !!!!

LOL, very true - especially after reading Bernadette Brady's latest book "Astrology - a place in chaos" which is all about fractals. However, knowing Alois from Astrodienst, I suspect he'll tell you his ephemeris isn't *quite* that accurate yet :)

are you kidding ... i think Alois thought i was crazy ... or at a minimum, an idiot who didn't have a reason for posing my question or that i had considered how big of a puzzle i was proposing to look at ... but then, i spend time calculating prime numbers looking for their pattern, so i'm used to rolling eyes and dare i say condescension from those who think i'm as far afield as i probably am ... i love astrodienst though ... alois work is impeccible.

Hi! I'm wondering if anyone can give me some book recommendations for Elements & Triplicity in History (with accurate historical data) from different perspectives? I'm researching the history of the elements. :) Thank you in advance.

I'm a little uncertain what you are asking for exactly. Are you looking to find out more about the Essential Dignities (i.e. Ptolemy and gang) or are you looking for something more esoteric? My recommendations would depend. :)

Thank you, KEishin. :) I'm basically looking for where the idea of the astrological elements throughout history derived from & how they've become a part of the astrology we see today. My research will be history oriented, so that's why I'm stressing accurate historical data. I'd like to gather as many perspectives (traditions or information from different areas of the world) as I can because I think the elements are of great importance in all forms of Astrology. I hope you understand what I mean..

There's not a huge amount written on the triplicities specifically, but here are some references:
Liber Hermetis (allegedly written by Hermes Trismegistus, translated and edited by Robert Zoller and Robert Hand), Chapter XXXV, "On the Virtue of the Triplicites and the Years of Life". Annoted version available fro Spica Publications, www.spica.com.au (http://www.spica.com.au) and available from Wessex Astrologer (based in UK but ships internationally) at www.wessexastrologer.com (http://www.wessexastrologer.com)
Liber Astronomiae (Guido Bonatti, trans/ed as above, available as above), Chapter XVI, "How the Signs Act on the Elements, and on Which Elements Each of the Signs Act"; Chapter XXII, "On the Four Triplicites of the Seven Planets"; Chapter XXXVI, "When Term is Preferred to Triplicity and Triplicity is Preferred to Term"
Also check out the use of triplicity rulers - a great introduction to this is in Joseph Crane's excellent small and highly readable book "A Practical Guide to Traditional Astrology".
Here's a quick summary - each element has two rulers, a day ruler and night ruler. For instance, all fire signs are ruled by the Sun during the day, and Jupiter by night - so if you were born at night (Sun in houses 1-6) and you had Jupiter in Aries, then Jupiter would have dignity by "triplicity rulership" in your chart. There's another system used by Dorotheus of Sidon where he uses three trip rulers - for fire signs, it's Sun, Jupiter and Saturn.
The three trip rulers can be used to narrow down definitions of houses. For example, we know that in modern astrology, the ninth house can be faith, long journeys, wisdom... but when you're doing predictive work how do you know how a ninth house thing is going to manifest? Will you go to a foreign country, or have a spiritual experience? Omar of Tiberius gave three meanings to each house: the ninth, for example, was Journeys, Faith/Religion, and Wisdom. Let's say your 9th house cusp was in a fire sign, and you were born during the day. You first trip ruler is the Sun, the second is Jupiter, the third is Saturn. The Sun in your chart would tell you something about journeys, Jupiter about your Faith, and Saturn about wisdom.
The other use of triplicities historically was in medical astrology, and seeing whether planets were compatible with temperament and season (for instance, fire is hot and dry, earth is cold and dry and so on).
A useful online resource is www.skyscript.co.uk (http://www.skyscript.co.uk) - this is Deb Houlding's website, and it's huge!
For temperament, there's a good article here: http://www.classicalastrology.org/temperament.html
