first i have to say jade is a lovely stone!
I use it as a luck and wealth talisman...

its the birthstone of March and Virgo...Jade is the anniversary gemstone for the 12th, 30th and 35th year of marriage.

Jade is the name given to jadeite and nephrite. They are similar in appearance. But, because of its more intense color and translucency, jadeite now brings higher prices and is thought to be the true jade.

you can really see the difference between the two images.
(was there a third called Chloromenlanite that was known as Jade?)

The most valuable form of jade is known as imperial jade and comes from Myanmar, it is an emerald green color.
A leek green variety called "Russian Jade" is found near Lake Baikal in Russia.
As you say it comes in many colours the rarest being yellows pinks purples and black, the green range from light to dark, creamy to greyish.

Jade is also found in Mexico, and Central and South America.

In health it is used to protect the kidneys, liver, spleen, heart, larynx, thymus, and thyroid.
People thought that wearing jade would increase body strength and add longevity, this is linked to the Eastern traditions of alchemy.

Jade is an ancient symbol of love and virtue.

mystical facts: Jade is said to help you relax, as it is a balanced stone helping to think and to do.

random facts:
Jade was adopted by the Alaska Legislature in 1968 as the State Gem.

In China, jade is regarded as a special stone. It is believed that when handled some of the secret virtue of the substance is absorbed into the body. Jade has been treasured in China as the royal gemstone, for 5,000 years.

most pieces of jade are carved to bring out the luster...

A friend of mine just purchased a piece for her son that is carved from "black jade." I was wondering if anyone (yoo hoo, Czechwoods!!) had information about the particular properties of this variation?

Along with everything mentioned for Jade this can be added...Black Jade is a stone for purification and cleansing one's energies. It is said to be capable of discharging any amount of negative energy. It also keeps all negative energies in one's surroundings away from the wearer.

Here's a bit more backround on it...Black Jade is the name given to a mineral of the amphibole group, found in the western USA. It is related to Nephrite, one of the two main types of Jade, and it has a hardness of 6 to 6.5. Black Jade takes a high polish and is well suited to jewelry or carvings.
